Story
Kirby is a 7-month-old (born 12/23) shih tzu/bichon, also known as “teddy bear, or shichon” He came from a place where the dogs had little human socialization. He’s made absolute leaps and bounds since being in a home! He is a champ for grooming, likes to relax on the couch for a good brushing. He does his business outside when he has some peace and quiet, as well as a minute to get comfortable on the grass. He is doing better every day on a leash, but a well-fitted harness is a must until he fully trusts and walks with you. He can be easily startled, and will jump, rear up, and try to run like the wind. The best way to approach him is calmly from the front, and underneath the chin since he doesn’t like things looming overhead. Kirby has never been aggressive, just avoidant. He is getting much more confident every day, but he will need a family with some shy dog experience and a gentle touch. Despite the odds, Kirby is a curious young man. He will melt your heart from across the room, so just scoop him up so he learns he is welcome in loving human arms. His preferred leisure activity is “snuffling” in something soft and/or crinkly. Paper is a favorite, so the kids might not be lying if the dog eats their homework! Kirby is not used to humans, but his curiosity has drawn him to the laundry basket. He has not torn any clothes, just taken them for a snuffle. He seems to enjoy cats, and totes around their small soft toys as well. Kirby is so so gentle, and a family with a middle-aged mild-mannered dog (or cat) would be a great match for him. Since he was raised around so many dogs, they bring out his most enthusiasm, but he still gets overwhelmed and shuts down a bit when it’s noisy or there’s lots of commotion. He has bravened up enough to climb some stairs on his own, and you can tell he feels so accomplished when he makes it up. He happily takes a meaty treat as a reward for his bravery and effort. I’m sure Kirby will blossom in no time once he’s home. Is it with you? His adoption fee of $300 covers his neuter, 1st vaccine, microchip with registration, and current monthly flea, tick, and heartworm preventions. Please apply at gfrpets.org/apply
