Story
LATTE  - 15 weeks & 7lbs (as of 7/8) Terrier Mix, Spayed  Is eligible to join our foster-to-adopt program. Please email fostertoadopt@socialteesnyc.org with the animal’s name in the subject line if you are interested! Want to straight up adopt? Submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org. Thier Foster Parent Says: "Latte is the sweetest little pup and has stolen the hearts of everyone in the neighborhood. She starts her day with lots of cuddles and likes to have a mellow morning as she wakes up. Latte loves to learn new tricks. In just a week, she has learned to sit, shake her paw, lie down, wait, and turn around. We usually work on tricks during every meal. She spends several hours napping, especially after a walk or after learning some new tricks. She is also learning how to free roam the apartment and learns quickly what actions are off limits (chewing furniture, etc). She is making significant progress on potty training and rarely has accidents indoors anymore. She also will use a wee pad if she has inside emergencies. Latte loves people and gets very happy when she gets attention. She has never approached strangers or friends or jumped on anyone for attention. Instead, she will give everyone puppy eyes and wait to be approached and is absolutely elated when she gets pets. She has made so many human friends in the neighborhood. When go outside, without fail, she is showered with compliments on her cuteness and good behaviour. However, Latte is still nervous around big dogs. She is curious about some of the smaller and calmer dogs. It takes her a minute to warm up and start playing with another dog. Latte is crate trained, and loves her crate. She sleeps through the night in her crate and alone (in another room than me) without any noise or any potty accidents. Sometimes she whines when she does not want to be in the crate, but within a minute she soothes and settles in for a comfortable nap. She doesn't have a problem being left alone, and is always well rested and ready to play when I come back home to her. She is a very quick learner and eager to please, and is a perfect balance of cuddly and independent. She has brought so much joy to the neighborhood and everyone that meets her is helping to spread the word for her adoption." Level of dog ownership experience needed: INTERMEDIATE: As an adult, this dog will need significant structure and plenty of daily exercise, training, and mental stimulation – 90 consecutive minutes of movement in the morning plus potty break walks and brain games throughout the day. The adopter must have relevant primary care experience with a similar breed, temperament, and/or energy level. (Primary care experience includes ownership, fostering, or dog sitting as an adult, not a dog you grew up with.) Relevant puppy care experience is a huge plus, but bare minimum the adopter must have TONS of time and patience. Raising a puppy can be a lot of fun, but it’s also  tremendous work. Puppies’ personalities and exercise/stimulation requirements change dramatically between now and when they’re a year old as their bodies and brains develop, so an active lifestyle and the ability to adapt to a pup’s evolving needs are a must. We strongly urge professional dog training with a rewards based trainer from the get go. Adults only or kids ages 8 and up – all puppies go through a mouthy, rambunctious phase and often accidentally hurt children when playing. PLEASE DO YOUR OWN BREED RESEARCH to make sure you have a better understanding of the kind of temperament and exercise requirements this dog may have as an adult. Energy level MEDIUM: Very young puppies sleep and nap a lot, but their energy level skyrockets when they become teens (4 months to around a year). As an adult, this dog will need significant structure and plenty of daily exercise, training, and mental stimulation – 90 consecutive minutes of movement in the morning plus potty break walks and brain games throughout the day at a minimum. (This is regardless of dog size – many small breeds were designed for lots of activity and will exhibit unwanted behavior when they’re understimulated.)  Cuddle Bug Level Medium — Likes to snuggle when he's in the mood but often stays in his own bed  Potty Trained Yes  — This puppy is potty trained!  Comfy with strangers? Yep — Wants to be friends with everyone who walks by, super social butterfly, loves anyone who will stop to say hello. She does not jump on people to be greeted, but will wait and watch until they approach her and absolutely loves when she gets attention from other people.  Good with Children? (ALWAYS requires supervision) Yes… but most puppies are not a great match for a home with kids under age 8 because they go through intense mouthy play and rambunctious phases and often accidentally hurt young kids while playing. Children must always be monitored and taught to interact with dogs of any age respectfully. Social with dogs? Yes. Some puppies are shy, others are bold, but all have the potential to be taught healthy socializing skills. It’s a huge part of raising a puppy and must be done carefully. How they interact with other dogs depends largely on how their humans help them learn to.  Social with cats? Yes. Almost all puppies have the potential to be friends with a cat. It’s on the adopter to know their cat’s temperament and preferences and to teach their puppy respectful manners.  Mouthy Behavior? All puppies go through phases where they chew your stuff and grab your hands, arms, feet… puppies naturally explore the world, play, and test boundaries with their mouths. (It also happens when they’re teething.) Their teeth are super sharp though, so it can be a very painful phase for humans and other animals in the home. Proper training, outlets, and socialization are key. Leash Manners? Getting the Hang of it - She is comfortable on the leash. It's getting better, but she definitely is still familiarizing herself with the city.  Okay in the city? Yes — Doing okay in the city. Currently being fostered in BK and is doing really well there.  Jumping on People to Say Hi? Low – Doesn’t jump up on people or dogs. Always all four on the floor.  Separation Anxiety?  Nope  – Completely fine being left home alone. Doesn’t cry or do anything shitty when you leave the apartment or house.  Crate training?  Yep – Seems comfortable in the crate, may whine a little at first but settles pretty quickly. We use the crate when we leave the pup alone and/or at night. She loves her crate and sleeps through the night in it alone, and takes all of her daytime naps in there.  Medical status: Up to date on their DHPP and Bordetella vaccines (for dogs under 4 months old, adopters will need to finish the DHPP vaccine series and administer the Rabies vaccine at 16 weeks of age) How this dog ended up with Social Tees: Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee or St. Thomas. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them. Rescue groups like ours bring them to the northeast where the desire for pets like these allows us to save their lives.  PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee any breed mix, exact age, or full grown size (if the dog is under a year old). We do our best with very educated guesses though!  This animal is not at the Social Tees office, all are in foster homes. LEARN MORE ABOUT US: socialteesnyc.org and Instagram @socialteesnyc PLEASE NOTE: This animal is not at the Social Tees office — all of our dogs and cats are in foster homes while they wait to find their forever families. :) If you’d like to apply to adopt this pet, please complete an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org. Because we are a small team and receive hundreds of applications each week, we are unable to respond to every application and every inquiry email, but we do our best. Please have patience! If your application is approved, you will for sure hear from us. If you have questions, please take a look at the Adoption and Fostering FAQs etc. on our website as all common questions are answered there. Thank you for your understanding and flexibility as we work to save these innocent lives!!
