Story
Location Decatur, IL Application at leiashope.org UPDATED 3/19 Requirement: ADULT ONLY HOME Ezekiel is a little guy that was surrendered due to two open fontanelles. The small one has closed but the big one remained. He will likely have this for the rest of his life. The open fontanelle is on top of his head and is approx 12mm, or the size of a lady's thumb print. An open fontanelle, or font, is like the soft spot on a baby. Essentially, there is not a skull/bone present in that area leaving his brain more susceptible to injury. Care should be taken to prevent any hard hits or punctures (teeth or claws from another dog/cat, bumping a hard surface, falling and hitting head, etc.) to the top of his head. The vet believes he has a mild case of Hydrocephalus (water on the brain). This makes housetraining and other learning concepts harder for him. Ezekiel is a spunky puppy that loves to play. He can entertain himself if need be, but he also plays with the fosters dogs who are very gentle with him. He likes it when the other dogs chase him and he is quite fast and has to slow down for them to catch up and then he runs off again! His favorite dog in the house is another toy poodle and he follows after him crying and begging for him to play with him. Ezekiel also likes to "hug" the other dogs inappropriately. They sense he is young and small and mostly pay no attention to him. Ezekiel is in a puppy x-pen when foster mom is sleeping or away. He has a bed, a water dish, and a litter box with him. He has a snuggle puppy that foster mom puts a hand warmer in for him at night. He loves his snuggle puppy and will go home with it. Ezekiel is a picky eater. We have tried several different puppy kibble and raw and he is not a fan. He will pick up a piece of kibble and toss it in the air and play with it like a cat does with a toy. Raw food he turns his nose up and walks away. We have found that he likes Open Farm freeze dried puppy food. He will also eat Primal freeze dried puppy food, but he does not like the Instinct brand. He also was not a fan of puppy wet/canned food. He nibbled at it but wouldn't eat much of it. Luckily, he is a small guy and doesn't eat a lot so freeze dried isn't terribly expensive. Ezekiel likes to cuddle some when you are sitting or laying down, but he doesn't like to be carried. He will wiggle and squirm trying to get down. This is dangerous with his condition if he is dropped. Foster mom just sets him on the ground when she needs to get up. We will be seeking a home without children due to his condition. We would be very apprehensive to place him in a home with a large dog. He will also not be suited with anyone who has mobility issues. Ezekiel's adoption is $550. He is microchipped, current on vaccines, and on monthly flea and heart worm prevention. He is not neutered due to his young age. We do not spay/neuter until at least 6 months of age. A neuter contract is required to adopt. Applications at leiashope.org. NOTE: WE ARE A VOLUNTEER RAN ORGANIZATION AND OUR APPLICATION PROCESS CAN TAKE 7-10 BUSINESS DAYS, DEPENDING ON OUR AVAILIBILITY AND YOUR REFERENCES. ALL OF OUR DOGS ARE IN FOSTER HOMES AND NOT AT A CENTRAL LOCATION. AN APPROVED APPLICATION IS REQUIRED BEFORE WE DO MEET AND GREETS. WE DO NOT SHIP OR TRANSPORT DOGS. YOU MUST COME TO THE LOCATION OF THE DOG TO MEET AND ADOPT. Dogs are a commitment for THEIR lifetime. For puppies this could be 15 years. If YOU cannot commit to the lifetime of the DOG, please do not apply. Puppies under 9 months must go to a home where there is someone home frequently (works from home or a partner is home), can adequately socialize and train the puppy, and can keep up with puppy energy!

If you are interested in this pet, please fill out the brief Adopter Survey by hitting "Apply for Adoption" on the profile. After we review your completed survey we will contact you by phone or email within three business days. We're primarily a volunteer organization, so we appreciate your patience. Please note- Out of respect for our volunteers and staff, we are closed on Sundays and Mondays and will not be processing any applications on that day. Do get back to us right away when we call or email regarding an application so that we can quickly connect using the process below: Select a pet and submit an online adoption survey. A PCH adoption counselor will contact potential adopters within three business days (PCH cannot guarantee any pet's availability, but we make every effort to accommodate adopters with a reply and possible alternative suggestions). Counselor and client will then have a conversation to answer questions, discuss any medical needs for the pet and determine the suitability of a match (if necessary, we may opt to put adopters in touch with foster parents). After a match is made, clients will be asked to sign our adoption agreement and pay the adoption fee online through our secure payment system *Please see our modified no-risk return policy. (below) The PCH adoption counselor will then set up a specific appointment time and location. Adopters should bring a pet carrier and leash to pick up. Adult pets will be wearing a collar. It is important that clients arrive on time, neither early nor late. If your adoption is scheduled at Pet Central Helps!: Upon arrival inside the Crossroads Center complex (360 Wylie Drive), look for the black Pet Central Helps! semi-trailer, which is right outside of our facility (Suite 720). Park in the parking lot and enter the facility. A PCH representative will greet you and show you to the adoption room. Your new pet will be handed to you. We will take a "Happy Adoption Day photo with your pet and family. If your adoption is scheduled at PetSmart: Park in the PetSmart Parking lot and enter the store.
