Story
Phoenix is a 1 - 2 yr old male Alaskan Malamute. He has a high energy level, so he will need plenty of daily exercise. He is loose and wiggly when greeting, and comes when called for cuddles and kisses. Phoenix does pull on a leash, but this can be resolved with obedience training. He is food motivated, and knows the commands sit and down. He mixes well with other dogs in a kennel and is indifferent towards cats in the shelter environment. Dogs are generally tested with dogs of their own size; and dog meets with the resident dogs are always encouraged. Our cat test should be used as a general-purpose screening only to rule out overt aggression; we always recommend caution when introducing dogs to cats in the home. Recommendation on suitability of placement with children by their ages is based on behavioral observations including energy level and response to body handling. We never recommend leaving young children unsupervised with dogs, and we cannot guarantee the behavior of dogs with children, other pets, or cats. Behavior evaluations should be considered as a snapshot of the behavior of the dog at this point in time; JHS believes all dog families need to be prepared to invest time and energy into training as well as provide common sense management of their new dog. We always encourage family to do some research on the breeds or mixes of breeds prior to adoption as many can have some unique characteristics that may or may not fit into their families. Always remember that the majority of dogs at our shelter have been exposed to or may have kennel cough. Kennel cough is contagious to other dogs, please talk to your vet if you have any questions about kennel cough prior to adoption. Please ask your adoption counselor at time of adoption if you have any unanswered questions regarding illnesses and treatments of the pet that you are adopting. For more information about this dog or any others at our Shelter, please visit www.joplinhumane.org. We are the Joplin Humane Society in Joplin, Missouri. 417-623-3642.

Story
Just as her name portrays, Wolfie is 23% grey wolf!! She is a very large dog; her journey began at the SEKHS at the beginning of the year as she was found roaming loose in danger of being hit by cars. We see this trend with illegal breeders from time to time that drop off their "unwanted pups; so we first reached out to nearby wolf sanctuaries. Sadly, she does not meet the 25% genetic criteria. However, she is legal to own due to this! She is comfortable with only the people she trusts, and all others she is terrified of.....sadly that's our hardest hurdle as we don't know the full story of her past on what she has been through. However, she can be walked comfortly on a leash with those individuals! With time, she opens up to the beautiful and happy girl you see in these pictures! Wolfie does have requirements to be able to adopt due to her specific nature and breed. REQUIREMENTS: -Wolfie is only available for foster-to-adopt. He future adopters must understand that her adoption will take time as she learns that she can trust them. -Before fostering to adopt, interested applicant must visit with her several times out our shelter. This is to help start the bonding process as moving to a home will be new for her. -Interested applicant MUST already own a large dog! She has done fantastic with other large dogs and thrives on pack structure; this gives her a huge progression point as she can move into a home with another animal that she is comfortable with. -Interested applicant MUST bring their dog(s) with them to the shelter before foster to adopt so Wolfie can meet with them. -Interested applicant must NOT HAVE ANY CATS. -Due to Wolfie's fear of humans, she is currently looking for a mature household with kids 16 years and up. If you meet these requirements and would like to proceed with the first steps toward fostering to adopt Wolfie, please apply for Wolfie online on our website: www.thesekhumanesociety.com Wolfie is already spayed, microchipped, heartworm tested and up to date on vaccinations!
