Story
Hey, I'm Cheerio! I came to the shelter from a really neglectful situation. I was super skinny, tethered to a heavy chain, and kept outside. Luckily, I got rescued and made my way here to PCHS where they have taken good care of me. I have gained 20+ lbs and am much better! I am an absolute sweetheart and love people. I've had a rough start in life but I'm hoping a special someone will come along and see the good in me.  If you're interested in adopting me, fill out an adoption application online at www.polkcountyhumanesociety.org/adopt where you will also find a link to reserve me for an appointment. Some pets are in foster homes or may already have an appointment scheduled, so the appointment is important to make sure I will be available to meet you when you come. Polk County Humane Society is located in Bolivar, Missouri, but also makes transports to the Denver, CO, Des Moines, IA and St. Louis areas twice monthly. For potential adopters in those areas, we can do a virtual visit using FaceTime or another app. Just request an appointment using the same link, but note that you want the visit to be virtual. We will call you at the time of the visit once it is confirmed. For long distance transports to Colorado and Iowa, there is an additional $100 fee to cover the cost of the transport ($65) and a health certificate from a veterinarian ($35). For transports to St. Louis, the additional fee is $50 to help cover gas. Going that last mile home for our sweet pets! All of our pets are neutered or spayed, have vaccinations appropriate for their age, treated with flea/tick/heartworm prevention, dewormed and dogs are also microchipped. #adoptdontshop ##2196587##

Story
Requires 6ft fenced yard and be only dog (at least initially) as he is dog selective.   Beau is a 5-year-old pitbull/hound dog mix. He is around 80 pounds . He previously lived in an apartment with his family (including a 2-year-old child and a smaller dog) but they wanted him to have a chance to be more active. He currently lives with his foster mom and another large female dog.    Beau is a very happy boy that loves to play ball and loves treats!  He rides well in the car. He behaves well going to the vet or to get a bath. He knows simple commands (sit, stay, lay down, wait) and goes in his crate easily when asked. He is food motivated and trains easily. He is happy to sleep on the couch or in bed with you. He is very affectionate and loves to snug. He does well with children. He is very happy to sleep in bed with you or on the couch.   He currently lives with a dog that he gets along with perfectly, but we are limiting him to be an only dog (at least initially) upon adoption. He will need a fenced yard, preferably higher than 4 feet, so he can be active as he loves to play ball and run around and sniff.     He is the sweetest boy and has SO much love to give. He hopes to find his forever family soon.      If you are interested, complete the  Adoption Application  on our website at  www.NeedyPaws.org  and we will contact you.  Adopters must live within an hour’s drive of St. Louis, MO. Story
Max was born here at Country Acres Rescue on October 9, 2023. He had NINE brothers and ONE sister. His Mama, Gabby, was transferred from an Animal Control with no staff or air conditioning back in September; we had NO idea she was pregnant, let alone pregnant with ten puppies! What a surprise! Gabby was such a good Mama; very attentive, loving, protective and provided plenty of milk for each baby - all ten pups are plump and HEALTHY. Max is such a happy, energetic, cutie-pie! Max loves other dogs, such a good playmate!!! Max would do best in a home with older children. He knows how to sit, stay and lay down. He is ready for his chance at a loving home. Please call CAR at 636-227-1919 to inquire more on how to adopt Max!

Story
I am a super sweet, 7 year old boy who needs lots of love and attention ❤️ I have separation anxiety, and my human can no longer stay home or take me to work with them. I am not a fan of being in my crate while they are gone, and I need someone that can give me lots of time and love and treats 🐕 My human says I have been great with different dogs, the cats, and the small humans. I really like the small humans because they leave their snacks where I can reach. I loves kisses, treats, bones, squeakies, and all the soft things🧸 I also like to zoom and spin when I am happy. If you think you could be my forever human, let's give it a go! We would be so grateful to find the perfect fit.

Story
Hello, I'm Sissie. I've been passed around a bit and unfortunetly this isn't my first time here at PCHS. I was adopted when I was a young pup but somehow ended up on the streets with no place to call home. I'm shy to new people but warm up with some treats. Once we're friends, I'm the sweetest girl. Can you be my patient friend? If you're interested in adopting me, fill out an adoption application online at www.polkcountyhumanesociety.org/adopt where you will also find a link to reserve me for an appointment. Some pets are in foster homes or may already have an appointment scheduled, so the appointment is important to make sure I will be available to meet you when you come. We will call you at the time of the visit once it is confirmed.
