Story
He is a goofy cuddle bug. Likes to be the little spoon. Super Smart. Adorable underbite when he is trying to distract you. Runs like Scooby Doo when playing hide n go seek. Clean bill of health. I love him very very much, and he has been spoiled since I rescued him starved on the side of the road three months ago. No separation anxiety or food aggression. Knows basic commands. Comes with toys, food, pool, meds, brushes, everything a dog needs. Would be willing to pay for food until he gets settled in. I am trying really hard to not take him to the shelter because I’m afraid to undo all the progress he has had. Also fear reactive to strangers due to abuse. I’ve only had him three months but I think he would respond well to reactivity training, although I’m not getting the chance as my landlord wants him gone. I’ve introduced him to a couple of experienced people and he did perfectly with them after about 15 minutes worth of treats. But a big scared dog needs experience.

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. When you are eating at a restaurant do you like when strangers stop to take food off your plate?  How about when family members do it?  Still no?  Well, then you will likely understand Zira. Zira is an 11 month old Pyr/Anatolian mix pulled with her sister in a TX shelter when she was about 5 months old. Zira was adopted by a couple who then returned her as they didn’t know how to help her when she was communicating.  Zira is a super sweet and silly girl who will give you hours of entertainment. Her whole body wiggles and wags when she sees people and anticipates getting loves, boop kisses, then she will flop over on her side for belly rubs. When she doesn’t have a care in the world, she’s out doing zoomies, chasing around her toys that she can throw herself, or playing with her foster siblings.  She is very smart, learns quickly and is very food motivated which helps with training.  She is an adventurer, loves to play with other dogs, loves to DIG (and is very good at it so you must love her more than your yard) and quietly sleeps through the night.  She is fine with cats.  She is crate trained, walks well on a leash and is fully potty trainied.  Zira is a great communicator and growls when she is uncomfortable, that in turn may make some people uncomfortable. She may not like every dog she encounters immediately and others she will.  She would benefit from a calm and confident human who can help her feel safe under such conditions.  Her current foster has two other fosters, Zira loved the female immediately and growled at the male for 4 days.  With a lot of reassurance (and treats), Zira started to look at her foster brother with curiosity and playfulness.  Now they can play nicely together in the yard!  Zira is at the age where she’s really considering her guarding trait, what she was genetically meant to do.  She needs to decide who is friend or foe and not everyone will be a friend…at least right away and maybe she may find a dog she doesn’t like at all.  Just like us people, we don’t always like everyone we meet.  Her first line of defense it to make it known she’s uncomfortable (growling maybe showing teeth) and then evaluating from afar.  She has likely OUTGROWN dog parks with her maturing as it takes her time to evaluate a “threat” (4 days for her foster brother).  She would love to have a friendly and loving sibling who she can count on through thick and thin.  Even so, she will likely never want to share her meals or her bones but may be able to be encouraged to share her toys.  With learning her guardian role, Zira does a great job barking at threats or when her foster siblings are barking.  She has a beautiful full and rich alto bark that should deter any stranger.  She is not a trained working dog but loves to be outside.  She is unaware of her size so large and sturdy children are best as she doesn’t have a “pyr paw” she has a “pyr PUNCH!”  Zira is being fostered in Tacoma, WA and can be transported within OR-WA.  OUR REQUIREMENTS FOR PUPPY ADOPTION: 1) PUPPIES WILL ONLY BE PLACED IN HOMES THAT HAVE AT LEAST ONE MEDIUM TO LARGE YOUTHFUL, PLAYFUL RESIDENT DOG. This helps integrate the dog into your household easier by giving the pup a mentor. 2) These puppies can be livestock dogs to farms and homesteads experienced in training LGDs. They also must be family pets that are allowed inside the home. 3) In addition to the youthful playful dog, someone must also be home at least part of the day. Please do not apply for a puppy if you are gone 8+ hours a day. 4) We give preference to applicants with prior Great Pyrenees knowledge/experience. 5) Secure and visible fencing required. 6) You must have a plan in place to socialize your puppy properly. Adoption Fee: $375 All of our puppies are spayed/neutered, microchipped and up to date on age appropriate vaccinations.  We do not adopt to families with children under the age of 6. Transport Fee: Transport fee has been sponsored by Zira's foster family. All of our puppies are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations. Story
Hello, I'm Toby! I'm a resilient and loving dog with a heart full of hope. My past has been tough, and I've never truly known the warmth of a loving home or the comfort of regular meals, so I might seem a bit food-focused. But I'm ready to leave that behind and embrace a new chapter filled with love and stability. I'm potty trained and incredibly smart, picking up new skills quickly. I thrive on affection and already know basic obedience commands. My friends at APA have seen how good of a boy I am and believe in my potential to bring joy to a new family. When you bring me home, you'll also receive a lifetime of free training from APA, ensuring we have all the support we need to thrive together. I'm eager to show you just how loving and loyal I can be. If you're ready to offer a special dog a chance to experience a true, caring home, I'm ready to be your faithful companion. Let's make wonderful memories together!

Story
Hit the trail with Oatmeal a sweet 4-year-old wheelie dog shepherd, Anatolian mix currently at Austin Pets Alive! She is a calm and gentle creature with a weakness for pets and treats. Her love for cuddles is bound to warm your heart. She is also a social bug who loves a crowd. She is an exceptional pup and a staff favorite at Austin Pets Alive!. Not a lot is known about Oatmeal's past life, but we know she arrived at APA! with a chronic spinal injury that led to paralysis in her hind legs. However, she is resilient and doesn't let her paralysis stop her from living her best life. Oatmeal is a very chill dog who enjoys toys, walks, and cuddles. She also loves meeting people of all ages and has the potential to live with another dog. Taking care of Oatmeal does not cause much trouble; she just needs some help going potty. This is a straightforward technique that can be taught quickly. She also uses a wheelchair to go on walks, but using a sling to pick up her hind legs and place them in the chair makes this process smooth and easy. An ideal home for her would be one where she can easily enter and exit with her wheels and navigate by scooting around without risking getting injured or falling. Having designated areas for her would be preferred while she becomes accustomed to the new environment. Oatmeal is a member of the exclusive Ruff Tail Runners, a group of dogs trained to walk or run on Lady Bird Lake. This little off-campus activity allows these dogs to get a nice break from their kennels and showcase them in front of many trailgoers to help them get adopted. During her trail walks, Oatmeal loves to sniff around and engage in her favorite sport, squirrel-watching, which she's quite proficient at. She is an excellent reminder of resilience and willpower. Nothing can stop this sweet pup from sharing her love with everyone, no matter how tough things might get, motivating everyone around her to keep pushing in whatever challenge they may face Oatmeal is ready to "roll out" of the shelter in her pink wheelchair and into a loving home. If you'd like to foster or adopt Oatmeal or any of our adorable adoptable pets, visit our website, austinpetsalive.org, or come in person at 1156 W Cesar Chavez near downtown Austin. Oatmeal was also recently featured in Austin Fit Magazine! https://www.austinfitmagazine.com/October-2024/pet-of-the-month-oatmeal/

Story
Queen Iduna may have started her journey with us as a shy, scared soul, but she’s blossomed into an absolute gem. This sweet girl once lived with other dogs, horses, and cats, but had limited human contact, making her understandably cautious around people. But with patience, love, and care, Queen Iduna is learning to trust, and she’s quickly discovering that humans can be kind. She’s thriving in the dog playgroup, enjoying the company of her furry friends and showing off her playful side. Queen Iduna is also improving her leash skills, and she’s proving to be an eager learner as she navigates the world with newfound confidence.Though she may need a little time to warm up, once Queen Iduna trusts you, she’s an affectionate and loyal companion. Her sweetness shines through with every gentle wag of her tail and quiet nudge for attention. She’s a true treasure, and we can`t wait to see her continue to grow and find her forever home with someone who will cherish her as much as she deserves.
