Story
Clay County Animal Rescue & Shelter is located at 375 Water Elm Lane, Flora, IL. Our phone number is 618-665-3005.  We are renovating our shelter so hours are by appointment only.  The typical adoption fee for dogs is $150.  It includes vaccination, deworming , spay/neuter, heartworm testing on dogs of age and microchipping, which is now mandatory by state law.  Some dogs we discount to as little as $50 due to sponsorship.  Some dogs we ask a higher adoption fee, which helps us recoup expenses on heartworm treatment on other dogs. All cats are spayed/neutered/vaccinated/flea treated/dewormed and microchipped prior to adoption.  Cat adoption fees range from $60-$100.  We spay/neuter/microchip/vaccinate and deworm all kittens and cats, prior to adoption.  Our shyer/less adoptable cats are classed as "barn cats" and are free with a completed/approved barn cat application, which can be found on our website. For updates on adoption events and more pics of pets available, go to our website, www.claycountyshelter.com or look for us on Facebook.   August 7, 2024, 12:15 am

Meet Sophie.  She is a 3 1/2 year old 28lb. Mini Aussie.  Sophie is super friendly with people.  She knows some tricks and comes when you whistle.  Sophie prefers dogs her size or smaller that are not pushy or in her face (so if you have another dog, we will require a meet and greet).  We are unsure about cats.  Please help us find this girl a home.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet. Story
Some dogs are easy. They love everybody and everything and have no quirks or issues. But doesn’t that make life kind of boring? Brayleigh is anything but boring. This girl was found as a stray roaming the streets of Texas. She had raging skin and ear infections and barely any fur. She’s also blind and deaf. But Bray is a strong and sassy survivor. With help from our vet care team, she had regular medicated baths and her beautiful coat started to grow in. Then she was a trooper and had dual luxating patella surgery. Through it all, Bray has remained true to herself. She’s very complex: She doesn’t like strangers and abhors men, but likes female humans and male dogs. Once she makes friends, she’s very sweet, affectionate, and playful … as long as you don’t try to brush out her mats or clip her nails. She’s gone through a lot in her 5-6 years and she knows what she doesn’t like! Bray loves to play, but is also content to lie down near her person. She isn’t terribly Velcro, but she does like to know where her human is. She likes to play with toys or just carry them around. We’re guessing she maybe didn’t have any her whole life, so now she will sometimes fall asleep with a toy in her mouth. It’s pretty adorable. Bray’s DNA test shows she’s a mix of Australian shepherd, Australian koolie, Australian cattle dog, and shar-pei. She’s a great size at just about 25 pounds. She’s good on a leash, great in a crate, and will potty outside if it’s dry or inside on a pad. She knows the touch command for “come” and is pretty convinced that’s all she needs to know right now. Brayleigh will need a very specific home with just a patient woman or women, preferably someone who has had experience working with “interesting” dogs. She’d probably prefer to be an only dog, but could live with a laid-back male canine sibling. Bray also needs a fenced-in yard for safety and would prefer someone home most of the time, although she is good on her own. She can be left uncrated and will use her potty pad and isn’t the least bit destructive. Brayleigh has allergies so she needs regular shampooing and brushing, daily medication, and weekly injections. Yes, she has many issues and can be difficult and stubborn. But don’t we all? It’s going to take a very special person to adopt this very special girl. But Brayleigh is so lovable, it’s worth the time it takes to get to know her. Plus she gives the biggest and best sloppiest kisses. ##915140##

Story
The tango is a dance that focuses on flair, love, and playful movement. We think our little Tango puppy was well-named. This Aussie mix is sweet, loving, and snuggly. But he’s also very playful and full of personality and can even be independent at times. He is a very busy, very nosy boy who always likes to know what’s going on. And he looks great while he’s doing it! Tango has so many favorite activities. He loves to explore, play tug of war, and sit on his person’s lap. Tango mostly loves other dogs and wants to run and wrestle with them but he needs some time to warm up to them. Tango is hearing and vision impaired, but it doesn't stop him from dancing through life. He is a smart boy and has already learned “sit” and is working on “come” and “stay.” He’s also doing great with house training and crate training. His ideal home will have a fenced-in yard and another dog buddy. And perhaps a dance floor. ##1475452##

Story
Want to play ball, Frisbee, or tug? Charlee’s more than up for the job. Lovely Charlee is playful and absolutely adores her people. She lives to catch a ball and tackle a good game of tug and is always busy having fun. This Australian shepherd mix is hearing impaired and knows hand signals for sit, come, and release and is so smart, she’ll quickly learn more. She’s house trained and crate training and does pretty well on a leash. Charlee is about 3 years old, which is a fantastic age. She’s through all the puppy shenanigans and is a great companion. Charlee’s main requirement is that you don’t share your affection with other dogs. She wants to be the canine center of her person’s universe, so no other dogs please. Charlee would prefer a home with a fenced-in yard and would be giddy if her family was around for much of the day. This gorgeous, sweet girl has so much affection to give; she’s just waiting for the perfect forever match. ##1370753##
