If you have knowledge of this amazing breed and can accept the financial commitment of a Bulldog, this English Bulldog is a gem! She is also a stunningly beautiful Bulldog and all of us who are Bully lovers just fuss over her whenever we see her. She is a beaut!! Prepare yourself for unlimited snorts and snuggles! Meet our favourite furry friend Bertha! Sweet Bertha is an absolute joy! She brings laughter and never ending entertainment to all of those who meet her! Bertha is a one year old English Bulldog. She is a muscular smaller sized Bulldog who is brindle and white in colour. Bertha currently weighs in at 31 pounds. Bertha arrived at the rescue as an unclaimed stray from an animal shelter. She came into our care with a urinary tract infection and double cherry-eye. After a course of antibiotics and successful double eye surgery she is looking and feeling so much better! From the first day she arrived, Bertha has lit up the faces of all she meets. Bertha’s world revolves around her people. She lives for every moment of affection. Her playful spirit and animated gestures bring many laughs and smiles. Her snorts and snuggles are never ending and always a reminder that you are not alone! If Bertha had it her way, you truly would never be alone! She likes to know what’s going on everywhere. She will follow you to the washroom, sleep in the kitchen through dishes, spend hours on the deck or sleep in the back seat of a car. Wherever you are willing to take her, she is ready and willing to follow! Bertha would be best suited in a home with a family without kids or with older children. Kids should be dog savvy and over 12 years old as she can be very excitable while playing. Bulldogs can tend to getting over excited easily so a calm and quiet home setting is best for her so she don’t get over stimulated. She gets over stimulated around other dogs so her new family will need to be an experienced dog family having worked with dogs on calming behaviours, who will continue her training on this. She should also be the only pet in the home so that she can be the main focus and get all of her people’s attention and training time. Bertha is young and obviously had limited socialization before we got her, and you can especially see this when she is around a group of dogs or another excitable dog….she needs to learn to calm herself when other dogs are around but this is hard for a young and bullheaded dog to learn so this is Bertha’s “needs work” issue. She is working on this in her foster home but this is something that takes time to work through and will be a continued exercise. It will be important for Bertha to take obedience training so she learns to control her excitement at the sight of other dogs as well as general obedience skills. Due to her broad shoulders and random snorts and noises, she can be quite intimidating to other dogs without intending to be. Many other dogs don’t do well with the sounds a Bulldog makes so her people need to be very aware of this and not allow random dog introductions. Bertha can do well meeting another very well socialized and calm dog, if done with a proper, gradual introduction but she is not one who should be allowed to approach any dog she sees, and her people need to stop others from allowing their dog to approach her. Although Bertha goes in her crate when asked, she prefers to travel with her people. When it’s time for work or events, you will see Bertha huddle by the door in hopes she can tag along! She will need to be crated at night and when she is unsupervised to keep her safe. She would prefer to have her people home more than away and a family that is out of the home for a full workday is not suited for Bertha. Adopters with previous bulldog experience are preferred, as they are a special breed with specific needs to keep them happy and healthy. She will need to have her wrinkles cleaned on a regular basis as well as special attention to any potential allergies associated with food. She is doing well on the food she is on in our care, which is a top quality diet, and she should be kept on this. Bulldogs are prone to environmental allergies and she may need allergy meds throughout her life, although so far she has been ok. Adopters should also regularly maintain her teeth through brushing and/or dental treats. Potential adopters should be aware of possible breed specific health issues and commit to any financial needs she may have in the future to maintain her health. This is a breed that comes with an assortment of potential medical issues and they are known as a high maintenance breed for upkeep and medical care. Her family needs to be fully aware of this and be financially able to care for anything that Bertha will need in her life. She has already had surgery for cherry eye (X2) and this is something that occasionally reoccurs in a dog’s life so that has to be kept tabs on. Bertha adores going for walks. She pants and snorts as she enjoys every step. She is happy to go for two walks a day mostly in the early morning and later evening depending on the temperature. She can overheat quickly and her new family will have to watch that she is not in the heat too long. She is also a very delicate little lady. When walking, her potential adopters will need to be very careful to avoid any muddy or puddle filled areas. She is very particular about where she walks and will cautiously walk around any areas that have puddles or patches of mud! As much as she loves her exercise, whether it be walking or running after her ball, Bertha enjoys a good nap. She has been known to hop up on the couch and curl up on a belly or two while they are sleeping, only to be awakened by her loud telltale snoring! She thinks nothing of joining any couch dwellers any time of the day or night! Belly rubs send Bertha into a trance. She is content to lay across your lap and enjoy a full belly tickle while falling off to sleep. Car rides are not a problem for Bertha. She will pace once or twice in the back seat and then settle as the car moves. Bertha is completely housetrained. She will always seek out her foster family and walk towards the door and back again as her way of telling you it’s time for a potty break. New adopters will need to be prepared to take her out frequently for the first few days until they recognize her cues. Her favourite toy is a rubber skeleton of a ball. She will run and play for hours never tiring of the chase and retrieve. She prefers to keep the ball to herself but has been known to nudge the ball with her nose in hopes of a potential playmate who is willing to toss the ball again or play tug of war for it. Story
Lil Oscar is currently being fostered in Texas. 1.5 years young and the best boy! 43 pounds but still a little thin. 45-48 pounds would be ideal. We have him listed as a bulldog/ boxer mix. Lil Oscar is paralyzed on the left side of his face. This could have been caused by head trauma or stroke. He was found as a stray and picked up by ACS San Antonio. He was on the euthanasia list but the staff was so fond of him, they snuck him in the office and started begging rescues to take him. Because I have a huge heart for bully breeds, he is now an honorary chihuahua. Lil Oscar has no limitations, he just drools a lot on his left side. We add fresh pet or chicken to his dry food instead of giving him wet food and a large matt under his water and this helps him not be so messy. He still loves chewy bones and treats. He has so many great qualities, I am praying someone can see past the drool and love him anyway. ❤️ He is great with cats, kids, dogs. He walks perfect on leash, rarely barks, is potty trained, well socialized and he is a giant baby. He is full of love, so gentle, doesn’t jump up on you and he is great with little dogs too. He has a beautiful white coat, does not mark, squats to pee. He is a gentle soul and full of so much love to give. So please give him a chance. Approved adopters please send your hold requests to the email you were given. To get approved please visit our website www.texaschihuahuarescuecanada.org to fill in an application to adopt.
