My name is Mr. Moe and I am in search of a great family that loves my handsome breed line which is English Setter.  I am 41/2 years old and my owner released me and my look alike brother to a vet who kindly allowed us to stay at her clinic for a while.  We were not neutered nor updated on shots and heartworm.  We are now!   I am 55 pounds and I do NOT have to be adopted with my brother.  We are both independent boys that love people and are told we are very handsome and rare to find as rescue dogs.  I have a fair amount of energy and it would benefit me to be adopted by someone with lots of energy and the ability to be outside to exercise with me.  I would love a fenced yard too.  I think kids would be fun to hang out with and I am good with other dogs if introduced slowly and they don’t jump around in my face.  I am a sweet and intelligent boy.  I am looking for someone to really give me some time and a chance to be taught some great manners.  I can learn quickly and I certainly will return to you every ounce of love and devotion that I have in my heart and soul.  I am ready NOW…. please email Critter Cavalry Rescue at ccrnewengland@gmail.com and tell them where you live and that you are interested in making me a part of your life! Socialization/training: Ranger has had some basic obedience training as he understands sit down, stay, no, etc. Ranger lived in an outdoor kennel, by himself, for over 10 years so learning how to be a member of a family inside has taken a bit more time. Ranger likes things calm in the house. He would prefer to be the only dog or share a home with another older dog that doesn’t bother him. If he were to go to a home with other dogs, very patient and planned introductions outdoors or at open, neutral spaces would be required. He does get along with the majority of dogs outside and likes to play with them too, however, indoors, he can have issues with certain dogs that are more situational (e.g., protecting his person). He currently lives in a home with several other dogs & doing well, but it took him several months to overcome his issues with the dogs he's living with. It may, or may not, take him some time to adjust to a new home. He can also be a bit vocal at times, mostly due to his previous living situtation. Crate trained: Ranger is known to settle down while crated or kenneled if all the other resident dogs are and he is in the same room with them. If not, he will act out until worn out. He really does best in his crate with someone home, especially if there is a storm or fireworks. Like many, he's not a fan! He will shake and keep wandering around the house looking for somewhere to hide. He's better in his crate with the door shut and his human around. Leash trained:  Ranger is fine on the leash and loves to go for a walk. He is a very strong boy for his age and still has a strong prey drive, so he will pull and get distracted at times, but he is eager to please and learns fast. Activity Level: Ranger is pretty active for a dog of his age. He likes to run around the yard and even likes to play with other dogs. He is always excited when his foster dad comes home and likes to run around and tell everyone how happy he is about it. Ranger also enjoys going for a swim at the dog pool. He mostly likes to run around the pool, but enjoys a lap or two when he’s there. Fence: Given that Ranger is an older boy, a home with a solid exercise plan with leash walks that would provide enough exercise to meet his needs would also be an option for him if there is no fenced yard, as he loves his walks (no dog parks though!). Given that he is a a bit of an escape artist, if his adopter has a fenced yard, it is required for that fence to be a secure fence that he cannot climb (preferably 6 feet privacy fence or other style fence that cannot be climbed). He can easily climb chain link fences. Behavior: Ranger is a sweet old man who would love nothing more than to lay in your recliner while you are home and nap. He loves to follow his human around in the house and be close by. He enjoys being petted and loved on. He likes all humans but seems to prefer to bond with men. He can be protective of his chosen people/person when it comes to other dogs, so setting boundaries early on will be important. He eats in his crate and bone/toy time is always supervised. Ranger likes things to be calm inside. He is doing well since in foster care living indoors with other dogs, but it took quite some time for him to be comfortable with them inside the home.  Medical History: Ranger had Lyme and was treated but he will test positive the rest of his life. Ranger has several old injuries from his previous life. He also has typical arthritis and old age pains. He takes Rimadyl daily and it's very affordable. He is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and on monthly heartworm prevention. Foster Comments: Ranger's ideal home would have someone who is home most of the time (retired, works from home or a hybrid schedule), no other dogs or another dog that is calm, no cats or young kids, and has a solid exercise plan for him with leash walks or a fenced yard with a physical fence that he cannot climb. He can be barky when left alone and when he's happy outside, so apartment living is not a good fit for him. Ranger is a very deserving dog. He is a sweet and happy old man. He loves a comfy chair, yummy meals, and to run around outside a little bit and the follow his human around inside. He is a great eater and loves a big cool drink of water (keep your toilet lids closed!) Ranger may be older, but he still has so much life left and love to give. He needs to find the right retirement home that will be patient with him and help him live out his life happy and safe as he deserves. He is very easy to love and you know he appreciates his new lease on life. Foster Location: Chesterton, IN A very generous donor has kindly offered to pay sweet Ranger's adoption fee to help this awesome boy finally find his forever home that he so deserves! Socialization/training: Charlie knows the commands Kennel, here, “no”, off, trade, leave it. We do our walks with a no pull harness and that help reduce his pulling. He is a high energy dog. He gets along well with other dogs but he does try to be fun police with some bigger dogs. He is a very well socialized and outgoing with all humans. He is a very sweet dog.  Crate trained: Yes, but he has some separation anxiety, so I use a belly band when I leave the house. Leash trained: This is a work in progress for Charlie. He needs a no-pull harness (Gentle Leader or Easy Walk harness) to reduce his pulling during walks. Activity Level: Charlie is your typical setter boy with high energy levels!  Fence: Yes, he will need a home with a physical fence, but 4’ height would be fine for him. He respects the fence in his foster home.  Behavior: Charlie is a true setter with a high prey drive. He loves toys! He's not destructive to property apart from toys, which he likes to play with. He is a goofy boy! He wants to learn and is very food and toy motivated, so he's easy to train. He is very affectionate, as he likes to kiss and nibble his human. He is more of a velcro dog and likes to be with his person, he is learning to not follow his person around inside. Medical History: Charlie is a lucky boy, as with the help of Above & Beyond, he survived stage 4 heartworm disease! He is clinically normal and he should be able to reach typical life expectancy for a setter. He is on a supplement for his heart and needs yearly echocardiograms. He is still on meds for separation anxiety. This dog is amazing and tough. Foster Comments: Charlie is not suitable for low energy environment, as he is a high energy boy and needs to be able to burn off his energy daily. He will need patience from his forever home; he had no self-control behaviors before coming to rescue a year ago, but he has learned a lot and has come a long way. His adopter will need to continue working with him. Socialization/training: Felix is very well socialized with other dogs. He loves to spend a lot of his time playing and wrestling with his dog friends. When it’s nap time, you’ll find Felix cuddled up with his pal. He adores other dogs and he’s very affectionate and snuggly with them. His confidence is also much higher in the company of other dogs. He initially modeled the resident setter when following requests such as to come inside, go outside, coming when called etc. Now he knows the routine and is much more confident and relaxed in the home. Felix loves attention and affection from his people. He loves to cuddle up on your lap and once there he is happy as can be. It appears Felix was not treated kindly in the past as he will shy away when an unfamiliar person reaches out their hand and goes down on his shoulder into a roll onto his back. Felix does really like people and enjoys attention and affection if given a few minutes to interact at his own comfort level. He’s just a boy who will need reassurance as he navigates new interactions with people. He consistently comes to his name, understands the basic routines and expectations in the home and is learning the ‘sit’ command. Felix has shared toys, treats and his foster mom with the resident setter without qualms. As of now, he is doing well on a potty schedule and supervision to redirect him to the door if it appears he needs to go out. Crate trained:  Felix was wary of the crate at first but now he dives right in because he knows he’s getting cookies or a frozen kong. He’s currently crated when home alone and overnight and does fine. He enjoys having a frozen kong to work on when home alone and a couple nylabones to gnaw on to pass the time. He is still learning the ropes so it is not recommended he’s left uncrated if not supervised Leash trained: Felix is still learning to walk on leash. He's getting better with practice. He would likely do better with a harness during the learning process. Activity Level: Felix is a high energy boy on the go. He loves to romp and play with the resident setter. He loves to run around in the yard hunting birds, squirrels, and butterflies. He’s fascinated by the fireflies at night and it’s very entertaining to watch him try to catch them. Once he’s expended some energy, he enjoys relaxing on the patio until the next bird has the audacity to land in the yard. Felix’s energy level is not as high in the house and he’ll entertain himself by playing with toys, either alone or interactively with his dog pal. He also likes to gnaw on nylabones to pass the time. He’s always up for a cuddle with his human and will snuggle up and take a snooze in your arms. Fence: Physical fence is necessary as Felix needs to run and romp freely to burn off energy and be a happy boy. He also loves to run around the yard tracking scents and searching for critters. He has 6 ft privacy fencing in his foster home. The gate is only 5 ft chain link and as of now he has made no attempts to jump or climb even when motivated by dogs and people walking by. No invisible fencing please due to his timid nature. Behavior: Felix is a very happy-go-lucky boy by nature. Once he feels secure, his friendly, smiley self appears. He can be very silly and playful. He likes to roo when he’s feeling sassy and his roo becomes a woeful yodel when he’s protesting a situation such as unwanted crate time. He loves to lay in the frogger position and can also stand up like a meercat for an admirable amount of time. He gets very excited about meals and treats and breaks into a happy hoppy twisty dance when he knows it’s time to eat. He’s extremely affectionate and cuddly and loves to sleep in your arms like a baby. Felix is initially timid and needs a little time and patience to feel safe and secure, but once he does, the real Felix is a typical happy, affectionate, sweet natured setter who is eager to be the best boy.   Medical History: Felix is neutered, up to date on vaccines, and microchipped. He is on monthly heartworm prevention. His next Leishmaniasis test will be due in March 2025. Felix has no noted health issues. It does appear he had an injury to the opening of his penis at some point as it is slightly asymmetrical. The vet does not recommend any type of repair as the injury is healed and will not cause any issue for him. Felix originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. He tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250. or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80. Foster Comments:  Felix is a very sweet and loving boy. Due to the suspected unkind treatment in the past, he appears concerned about being harmed and will drop to his shoulder and roll to his back in a submissive posture. He will do best with a family who understands the sweet and sensitive nature of setters and who is willing to be patient, loving and kind as Felix gains trust and security in his new home. He will do best living with another playful yet confident dog in the home. Felix has not been around children in his foster home so any introductions and interactions with children should be well supervised to gauge his comfort level. Older children would be advised due to Felix’s submissive response to quick movements toward him, reaching out to touch him etc. Felix has also not had the opportunity to be introduced to cats so it’s unknown how he would respond to them in the home. Overall, Felix is a very easy keeper. He grows more confident every day and has learned and adjusted to the routine of the home rather quickly. He’s the whole setter package and will make a wonderful addition to the family. Socialization/training: Maggie is smart and wants to please. She knows several commands and will come, sit, stay, wait, down and lay. Maggie plays with our other dog and she would need another dog in her new home. She loves to be around humans and is still working on sitting when meeting new friends rather than jumping. My 89 year old mother lives with us and Maggie has been amazing with her. She doesn’t trip her up with her walker and sits for lots of pets. She settles down quickly. We have not exposed her to cats as we have none but her previous owner said she was ok with them. Maggie was used to a doggie door in her prior home, so she needs to go out frequently but she will let you know when she has to go out by getting your attention. She can be startled by loud noises but adjusts after she is used to a new noise.  Crate trained: No, Maggie will go into the crate if a couple of treats are thrown inside but does not stay. She does not like it when the door is shut, she has anxiety if closed in a room by herself. We shut our bedroom door at night and she is fine as long as we are there. Leash trained: Maggie loves her leash and does very well on her walks. She can pull a bit, mostly if it is a new route or if she catches a scent. She is very alert and doesn’t miss much. She does not bark at other dogs. We make her sit if another dog or human is passing as if she is walking, she can’t help but try to introduce herself. I use a harness with a lead in front and one on the back, a gentle tug on the front one turns her enough that she slows down when going too fast. She absolutely loves her walks. She will sit when you are putting her harness on her but if it takes too long does get wiggly. Activity Level: Maggie still has a good amount of energy in spurts. She loves her walks, at least 2 a day. She loves to look out the back door at the birds and be on the deck. Fence: A fenced yard is not required but Maggie will need at least 2 walks every day. She would take a walk as many times a day as you want to take her. We do not have a fence, so when outside, she is on a leash. Behavior: Maggie is a joyful dog and plays with toys and our other dog. Maggie loves her stuffed animal and tennis balls. She will do a chew toy occasionally. Maggie has a strong prey drive and the first thing she does out the door is get low to survey the area for something interesting, like birds, squirrels and chipmunks. Maggie is affectionate but not a huge snuggler. She's gentle and loves a good scratch on the head and attention. She needs to be around a human as she does not like being left alone. She is quiet for a setter. Medical History: Maggie is in good health with no known issues. She is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and on monthly heartworm prevention. She is lanky and a little girl at only 32-33 pounds. The vet said I could put some weight on her but even with extra food she seems to just stay at her weight. Foster Comments: Maggie is gentle and sweet. She loves to sleep under the bed and that is her favorite spot at night and during the day. Maggie is not always at your side in the house but knows you are there and loves attention from her people. Maggie adjusted to our home fairly quickly but has anxiety when alone, so she will need another dog as a companion in her forever home. She will also need a human that is around most of the time. Socialization/training:  Sam has some basic training, but could use more training. He is fully housebroken and good at recall. He has been fostering with two other dogs and has had no problems. He is very well socialized and outgoing with humans. He hasn’t met a human he doesn’t like and will sit to wait for pets. Crate trained:  Sam is crate trained and settles down quickly. He likes to take special treats into his crate and often settles there for a nap. He has been crated while his we are out and has been fine. Leash training:  Sam is okay on leash but could use some more training. He has gotten better on leash and pulls less (other than when excited). While walking on leash he can get excited, barking and pulling when he sees another dog (or animal). We have been working on this issue and he is highly food motivated and trainable. Activity level:  Sam is a typical young setter. He does zoomies in the yard while chasing squirrels and chipmunks. However, he settles down quickly and is happy to spend lots of time napping. Sam does get excited when we come home and can be vocal. Fence:  Sam has a definite prey drive. He has done well with an in-ground electric fence. He would probably be better with an actual fence as he was very skittish with the correction from the electric fence (even though it was just a beep). He has adapted well to the fence and respects it. Behavior:  Sam is a sweet setter who loves to cuddle. He likes watching the birds and chipmunks in his foster yard, but he will come in when called. Sam likes to know where his human is but doesn’t need to be in the same room. His favorite time is when his humans watch tv so he can snuggle next to them on the couch. Medical history:  Sam is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and on monthly heartworm preventative. He has some dental disease that will need to be addressed. Sam has had Lyme disease which was treated. Foster comments:  Sam is a huge cuddle bug. At food time, he lets out cute setter roos and then goes into his tippy-tappy happy dance. Sam is scared of thunderstorms and fireworks, but will settle down if he finds a small cozy space to hide. Sam was initially timid but has blossomed into an extremely affectionate dog, liking to give his humans kisses. He is food motivated and wants to please his humans, making him highly trainable.
