My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Gladiolus AKA Gladys AKA Georgia is now accepting applications for her new family! Here is what her foster family has to say:

This sweet young lady is a stunning purebred Golden Retriever who was rescued with many others from a HORRIBLE breeder who not only forcefully overbred the dogs but kept them so isolated that poor Georgia had never been in a house or backyard or eaten food out of a bowl (just kibble tossed on the floor in her cell). It took her a lot of time to learn how to simply walk through doorways unafraid, not dive under the nearest furniture anytime the TV was turned on or when she heard a loud noise and just generally be okay in a home environment.

Thankfully, although she still has a way to go and will require lots of patience and love, she is now so much more comfortable at home and is even now learning about chew toys, comfy beds, leash walking and how to behave with manners (she has “sit” down but we’re still working on “stay”).

Despite what happened to her, she LOVES people and CRAVES attention. She always wants to be by your side (will follow you into the bathroom). Every morning when she wakes up, she is SO EXCITED as realizes she is still in a loving home; she jumps up and down and her tail barely stops wagging enough to stop and go potty (BTW, she is totally potty trained and has had ZERO accidents since we’ve had her).

Georgia (we also call her “Georgie” and “George” — she answers to all of them because she’s super smart) is still considered a flight risk because of her past, so potential adopters would need to have a fully fenced (6’ minimum) yard and be willing to invest in a GPS collar (absolutely non-negotiable). That said, she’s very close to nailing the stay command and has gotten over being spooked by loud noises while on walks. Progress!!!!

She gets along with other dogs and seems to feel more comfortable meeting new people when other dogs are around; however, she still hasn’t learned to actually play with other dogs yet and doesn’t love to share attention. She gains confidence from another well-balanced dog so this will be imperative in her forever home. Because she is currently in a multiple dog home where she gets along with all five other dogs but is always left yearning for more attention, we will not be considering applications with more than two other dogs, so that she doesn’t have to share the love and attention more than necessary.

In terms of kids, she seems to warm up to them quickly and she is very gentle—not at all aggressive towards people of any age. However, as she is still learning about what in a home can be chewed and what can’t (she has chewed a couple remotes at our house), small children might leave things on the floor that Georgia could eat and may also leave the door open. Additionally, once Georgia warms up to you, she likes to get very close and jumps up (we’re working on this with her) and might inadvertently push over a child. For all of those reasons, only applications with older children will be considered. (12+)
**6' fence and agree to use GPS collar for flight risk
**One-two friendly well balanced dogs in home
**Only children 12+
**Patience to continue to help Georgie become the pet she so wants to be
**TampaBay area
