Check out our sister brand, Kinship, for vet chat, a nutrition calculator, basic obedience training, and (much) more. So you're never flying solo in this pet parenting thing.
We rescued Kalamazoo from Riverside County Department of Animal Services on August 20th. He is 8 years old and weighs 19 lbs. Kalamazoo was so scared when he arrived at FFF, but despite that, he quickly learned all of the routines onsite. He knew to run out the sliding glass door into our play yard when his kennel was opened, and he knew exactly which kennel was his to run back into when it was bedtime. He's a very smart cookie!
Thankfully, in mid-September, Kalamazoo was chosen to live in Foster home with a very patient couple who were on sabbatical from their jobs. They gave Kalamazoo the space he needed to decompress in a calm environment and celebrated all of his small steps forward.
His Foster Mom reports;
"Kalamazoo is still very shy and prefers to be alone, but he's a smart, handsome boy that deserves to feel safe. There are so many good things to say about Kalamazoo:
* He eats well twice a day (with treats and access to dry food in between) and no issues taking med twice a day, which I give with cheese sticks
* He knows where to go potty and does so consistently on the pee pad in our designated area.
* He is not destructive at all - has never chewed or had an potty accident.
* He sleeps through the night in our bed currently.
* He is crate trained.
* He is quiet.
* He rides great in the car.
* He gets along with other dogs of all sizes.
* He has never nipped, growled, or ever shown an ounce of bad energy.
* He lets you pet him, kiss him and talk to him.
What Kalamazoo still needs help with:
* Fear and anxiety. He visibly looks worried most of the time and will watch people closely.
He can initially be resistant to being picked up but okay once he's up and you are holding him.
* He's not confident on a leash or being outside at all. A quiet yard with slow introductions would go a long way.
* He won't eat, drink, or go potty if you are watching him or nearby. He always looks visibly scared looking after going potty, almost as if he thinks he's in trouble.
* He's a major introvert. He doesn't move from his spot unless it's to eat, potty, or drink water, so building confidence with him that he's safe to explore and interact and do all the dog things will be the hill to overcome.
We really hope Kalamazoo can find a loving home with someone that is ready to rebuild his trust in humans."
Kalamazoo made so much progress in his foster home! Now he needs another foster home (or even better - a forever home!) where he can continue to heal from the past and trust that his future is bright.
It is so rewarding to help a frightened dog learn to love and trust and to see him blossom.
