Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Maize is an energetic and excitable guy, but underneath it all, he’s a total sweetheart and a lovable baby. If you’re lucky enough to wake him up in the morning, you’ll be treated to some of the cutest stretches imaginable—he’s the perfect little shadow! A morning walk is a must, especially as he settles into his new home, but don’t worry, cuddles will follow once he’s had his exercise.
One of Maize’s charming quirks is his morning routine: whenever he’s allowed in the bedroom, he loves to rub his neck all over the bed before deciding whether to snuggle up or gaze out the window. He’s also a fan of puzzle feeders—this clever boy thrives on mental challenges and will master them in no time.
Maize would make a fantastic companion for someone who enjoys training, adventures, and exploring the outdoors. He loves trail walks and does well interacting with smaller dogs. He’s also impressively focused, ignoring barking dogs behind fences as he goes about his “busy” walk.
While Maize doesn’t love car rides just yet—he asks to go but gets a bit nervous—and isn’t a fan of being restrained, these are areas where patience and trust-building will go a long way. A calm and understanding home is exactly what he needs to feel secure. Once he knows he’s loved, the transformation is remarkable. In just a week, you’ll see a different dog, and after a month, he’ll have stolen your heart forever.
Maize is also great with older kids. Our daughter and her friends adored him, though he can get a little overenthusiastic during playtime. A simple “timeout” (which we associated with kenneling) usually helped him understand when he needed to calm down.
With patience, love, and consistency, Maize will be the most rewarding companion you could ask for. Are you ready to welcome him into your heart and home?

More about this shelter
Welcome to CMHS! In continuous operation since 1943, the Central Missouri Humane Society promotes the well-being of companion animals – pets that enrich the lives of the people who love them.
The Columbia Humane Society was formed in 1943 to provide shelter and care for Columbia’s abandoned animals. Originating in a little structure on Creasy Springs Road, the organization has grown into today’s Central Missouri Humane Society, a regional animal welfare agency caring for thousands of animals annually and providing veterinary services for low-income pet owners.
