My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Dewey Decimal!

Little Dewey Decimal entered Downey Shelter as an emaciated stray and was not claimed. He is that perfect medium-sized dog who doesn't really walk like a dog, eat like a dog, or know what to do with dog friends or people. We don't anything about Dewey's previous life, but it seems like he didn't get to experience much.

Dewey came to us with pretty terrible arthritis. He is on some good pain meds now, but walks with stick legs and a hop. He is a picky eater and we have discovered he likes turkey wrapped around cottage cheese with kibble sprinkled on top.

Dewey is great with dogs, wagging his helicopter tail when he meets new friends. He is in play groups of 3-4 dogs, but a play group of 10 or more... his previous world was just not that populated, so he gets overwhelmed and tells everyone to go back where they came from with a quick shout.

We think Dewey has figured out that he is here to live with us, and we want to help him. He is not used to having so much doting care, from outfit changes to 'goodnight' kisses. Sure, he is down to be leashed up to go for a walk (ahem, gallop), and he loves the simple pleasures of a plush Costco bed. Dewey has also learned to enjoy ear scratches and gentle pets.

Dewey enjoys going on our weekly group hikes, and he is a fun walking buddy! As you can see in the video, he keeps on truckin' despite his stiffness and loves sniffing on the trails. He has great leash manners - doesn't pull and stays calm around passing dogs, big and small. Dewey Decimal dances for back scratches, too. So cute!

Dewey needs someone to show him what life as a loved dog offers, while appreciating that everything is new to him, from living under a roof, to sharing his space with a human!

Stop by to meet this sweet and gentle guy between 10 AM and 3 PM any day of the week!
