My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Rizzo came into a Texas animal shelter in a very neglected state. She was picked up as a stray in early December during a rainstorm. Her kennel tech said she was soaked to the skin, freezing cold and emaciated. Rizzo left the shelter, again in a rainstorm, but protected as she headed off to become part of the NorthStar family.

There is no doubt that Rizzo was loved at some point in her life. This tiny gal loves to be held. She is generous with her kisses and snuggles. She has no problem being handled by people she doesn’t know - she's also fine with children (as long as they respect her tiny size). And Rizzo is dog friendly - big and small. She is crate trained and house trained. Her foster mom says that Rizzo is one of the easiest fosters she's ever had as a houseguest!

Rizzo has adjusted quickly to life in her foster home. She sleeps on the floor in her foster mom's bedroom. Or occasionally, foster mom will let her sleep on the bed. She is your typical Chihuahua - she snuggles under the covers and doesn’t move all night.

Rizzo weighed less than 5 pounds when she was rescued but the vet said she should weigh 7-8 pounds. She has a cataract in the right eye but she can still see shadows - a cataract is beginning to form in her left eye but currently her sight is good. She has missing some teeth and needs a dental cleaning. We will get that done, along with being spayed, before she makes her way to NJ. We are focused on kidney support for now - she eats a prescription canned food that should resolve the issue. Once her medical issues have been addressed, Rizzo will travel from TX to NJ so she can find the perfect forever home!

We believe that Rizzo is about 12 years old. If you are interested in adopting tiny Rizzo, please fill out an adoption application at http://www.northstarpets.org and ask for her by name - RIZZO TX. The adoption fee for this sweet gal is $250.

More about this rescue

In many areas of the country, especially in the South, the situation for animals is desperate: Chained outside and starving, homeless and running loose, or just simply no longer wanted and abandoned in an overburdened and underfunded facility that can’t possibly take another. For these animals, there is not much hope…except to look in the night sky for the North Star, their only way out. We are a group of passionate volunteers committed to saving these innocent dogs and finding them a new forever home. NorthStar Pet Rescue was founded in 2017, and although we might be a relatively new name among New Jersey animal rescues, you may recognize some of us from the work we’ve done volunteering with other rescues to help animals over the past decade. We are 100% dedicated to operating in an safe, transparent, and ethical manner and to ensuring the best veterinary practices are followed with regards to the care and transport of our animals. NorthStar Pet Rescue is IRS 501(c)(3) charitable organization (EIN: 81-5348036).
