My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Sky is estimated to be about a 3 year old 40ish lb lab mix who was found as a stray in Texas with a bullet above her wrist in fall of 2024. Once the bullet was removed, she was sent to us where she was in a split for a couple weeks to try to help her leg heal, but ultimately the vets decided amputation was best.

Sky is doing great after her surgery. We can’t believe how well she is getting along on three legs! She loves going for walks, car rides and being near her people. She is your typical lab, very playful and energetic at times (you would never know she was missing a limb) and then she crashes and likes to nap on blankets and the couch. She is kennel trained and has not had accidents in the house while kept on a consistent schedule. She has done well with other dogs of all sizes, and is learning to be around cats. She is very smart and trainable. We can tell she has once had an owner because she gets very excited when we get the leash out to go for walks.

Sky does need a few minutes to warm up to humans, she’s timid at first but then she will love you. She would probably do best with older kids in the home as quick movements can sometimes make her nervous. She can be vocal so we are suggesting a place without shared walls - or someone who can handle some barking. She would benefit from basic training and she deserves the best home where people will show her love and attention she deserves. Sky's adoption fee is $250 - apply at www.foreverhomedogs.org to meet her!All adoptions are $300 per dog for puppies under 1 year, $250 for adults 1 - 9 years old and $150 for senior dogs which include spay/neuter, micro-chipped and up-to-date on required shots.

Senior dogs, at our discretion, are adopted out at $150 per dog because we know they will have less time with your family and may eventually have more needs as they get older. But we feel these dogs deserve to live out the rest of their lives as part of a loving family.

More about this rescue

Forever Home Dog Rescue is dedicated to rescuing homeless and abandoned animals primarily from high-kill shelters.

In working with committed volunteers, temporary care homes and local veterinarians, we are able to rescue dogs, provide them with loving temporary care, and find them well-matched, carefully screened forever homes. All our rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped and have all necessary veterinary care.

We were formed in January 2014 and are a non-profit organization in central Iowa. We are pending our official 501c3 status. We receive no government funding and rely completely on donations.
