Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Fiyero is a handsome black Pit Mix with a gentle soul and a heart full of potential. Much like his namesake from Wicked, Fiyero can come across as hesitant and uncertain when he’s around new people or exploring new places. These situations make him feel a bit like a "scarecrow on unsteady legs," but with patience, love, and a little encouragement, Fiyero transforms into the most loyal and affectionate companion.
Once he warms up to you, this sweet boy’s true personality shines as brightly as the emerald city itself. He’s goofy, loving, and full of boundless charm. Fiyero’s soulful eyes tell you he’s ready to be “changed for good” by the right person who will take the time to earn his trust.
Like Elphaba, Fiyero could use a little help refining his manners, but don’t worry—he’s eager to learn and more than capable of becoming the good boy you know he can be. With the right guidance (and maybe some tasty treats as motivation), he’ll be acing his lessons in no time, ready to "dance through life" with his forever family.
Fiyero’s ideal home would be with someone who understands that even the bravest of hearts need time to feel safe and secure. If you’re looking for a dog who will love you fiercely once he trusts you, Fiyero might just be the perfect companion.
Adopting Fiyero means being patient and giving him the space to settle in at his own pace, but in return, you’ll gain a best friend who will love you unconditionally. Take a chance on this sweet boy, and you’ll find that loving Fiyero is nothing short of wicked.
Since many of our adoptable dogs are in foster homes, appointments are highly recommended to ensure the animal you are interested in is currently at the shelter. Please call or e-mail the shelter to set up an appointment to meet and adopt!
Our adoption fees include the following: all of our dogs/puppies are current on vaccinations (DHPP and Rabies if over 3 months of age) at the point of adoption, dewormed, heartworm tested and current on preventative, microchipped, treated for fleas/ticks and are spayed or neutered. Our large dog adoption fee is generally $175 + tax. Our small dog and puppy adoption fee is generally $275+ tax. Adoption fees may vary in special circumstances. Due to space limitations, we do not hold dogs.
Because we are on a busy street, we require that all dogs leaving the shelter be in a carrier or on leash. All pets remain up for adoption until an approved application is processed and their adoption fee paid.

More about this shelter
BRHS formed in 1998 to help the Brookings Animal Control Department find homes for stray animals. The unclaimed, homeless cats and dogs from Animal Control are BRHS' priority. Those unclaimed are transferred to BRHS where they get the necessary wellness care and are spayed/neutered. Animal Control brings any sick or injured animals to BRHS for immediate care.
In 2013 BRHS was very fortunate to move into its present location across from the Brookings Airport. The building was built specifically to house animals and provides a separate dog kennel area, rooms to house cats, natural lighting, and proper ventilation throughout the whole facility. There are also medical isolation, quarantine, treatment, and surgery rooms.
BRHS has been recognized for and has won multiple awards from both city and national organizations, including several Dog Rescue Awards and a nomination for the Governor’s Award.
