My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Prepare to fall head over heels in love with Milton, a charming 4-year-old yellow Lab mix with a personality that is every bit as bright as he is. Milton's journey may have started with abandonment, but he certainly won't let that be what defines him. He's sadly been recently returned due to no fault of his own over an unfortunate diagnosis of idiopathic epilepsy. But this time, we know it will be forever! We are absolutely certain his family needs him as badly as he needs them.

Milton's personality is a perfect match for his sunny yellow coat. He's a happy, bubbly, and affectionate boy who wears his heart on his paw. His past graduation from the Puppies for Parole program at the Jefferson City Correctional Center speaks volumes about his potential. During his time there, they worked on essential skills such as house training, crate training, and leash etiquette, showing just how incredibly smart and trainable he is. But it's not just his intelligence that sets Milton apart; it's his empathetic temperament that truly shines. He's a gentle and sweet soul, and is an absolute pro at making new friends. Playfulness and silliness are also part of his repertoire, ensuring that every moment spent with him is as bright as he is. If you've ever considered a therapy dog, Milton would make a awesome candidate with his confidence and friendly demeanor.

Milton's health is well-maintained. He loves mealtime and will eagerly devour his food, making it a breeze to administer. He also takes his seizure medication like a champ.

This sweet guy isn't just looking for a home; he's searching for a family that will cherish his loving spirit, appreciate his intelligence, and embrace his playful nature. If you're ready to open your heart and home to a canine companion who is truly exceptional, Milton is the one for you. Contact us today to meet Milton and start your journey with him!

More about this shelter

Dogwood Animal Shelter is a non-profit, no-kill shelter.

Since its infancy, compassionate, like-minded volunteers have been the driving force behind Dogwood Animal Shelter. Through auctions and sales, a handful of dedicated people raised enough money to build its first, albeit small facility and was established as a 501(c) 3 in 1976. It was filled beyond capacity almost immediately.

The shelter is funded entirely from donations and proceeds from their Dogwood Animal Shelter Thrift Store.

After years of saving, planning and busting at the seams with fur-babies, in 2005 it was time to build a new facility with their own in-house clinic! Under the direction of Dr. John Reinhold and coupled with a very dedicated and gifted team of Veterinarians and staff, Dogwood Animal Shelter continues to offer low cost spays and neuters to the public as well as services to their shelter buddies; services to approximately 2,000 dogs and cats yearly!

Dogwood Animal Shelter began their journey of being a successful no-kill shelter in 1997, and since then has saved over 40,000 lives!
