My personality

My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Hachiko, the Heartbreaking and Handsome German Shepherd Looking for a Second Chance!

Hachiko is a gorgeous 75-pound German Shepherd, just under two years old, with a story that will tug at your heartstrings. Found wandering the streets, alone and scared, this sweet boy was brought to a local shelter. Day after day, he waited behind bars, hoping someone would come for him—but no one ever did. Overcrowded and under-resourced, the shelter was no place for a dog like Hachiko. His spirit began to break, and it was clear he wouldn’t survive much longer.

Thankfully, Hachiko was given a lifeline. Now, he’s safe with us, and we’re determined to find him the loving forever home he deserves.

Why You’ll Fall in Love with Hachiko:
Smart and Trainable: Hachiko is a quick learner who is already house- and crate-trained. He’s eager to please and thrives with structure and positive reinforcement.
Playful and Sociable: He loves playing with other dogs and has a natural knack for making canine friends. He also currently lives with children and adores them, proving he’s a family-friendly pup.
Affectionate and Unique: Unlike some Shepherds who can be reserved, Hachiko is affectionate and thrives on love and attention. He’s the type of dog who’ll lean into you for pets and snuggle up on the couch if you let him.
Adventure-Ready: Whether it’s a long hike, a walk around the neighborhood, or a trip to explore the great outdoors, Hachiko will be your loyal companion. He’d also make an excellent jogging partner and rides beautifully in the car. Despite his active side, he’s very go-with-the-flow and knows how to relax and enjoy quiet time, too.

What Hachiko Needs:
Hachiko is looking for an active, loving family who will embrace his adventurous spirit and his affectionate heart. He’s incredibly food-motivated, which makes training fun and rewarding for both him and his future family.

Why Hachiko Deserves This Chance:
After being abandoned and left to fend for himself, Hachiko deserves nothing less than a family who will love and cherish him. He has so much love to give, and it’s heartbreaking to think he almost didn’t get this chance.

Adoption application

Go meet their pets

We have foster families throughout the Bay Area, spanning from Sacramento to Gilroy. All of our dogs are cared for in foster homes, as we do not yet have a physical facility—but we dream of one day saving animals without boundaries.

To ensure thoughtful and responsible adoptions, we do not host large adoption events. Instead, we prefer to showcase pets in their foster homes, where they feel most comfortable. After you apply, the foster family will reach out to discuss next steps, answer any questions, and arrange a meet-and-greet.

If your application is not chosen for a specific dog, we keep it on file for 90 days. During this time, you can email us to request your application be forwarded to other foster parents for dogs you may be interested in.

More about this rescue

Underdog Animal Rescue, our name pretty much sums us up. We are a registered 501c3 non-profit, volunteer operated nonprofit group dedicated to saving homeless and abandoned dogs from high kill and overcrowded shelters all over the state of California since 2014. We are an all-breed, size and age rescue, meaning we save many of the hardest to place, overbred such as pit bulls and chihuahuas. Our foster-based group lives and operates anywhere from Sacramento to Monterey. We literally give them another chance at life. We have saved over 3000 dogs since starting and we only plan to continue to grow.

When we rescue an animal, we place them in a foster home where they can decompress, learn to be a pet, socialized, spay/neutered, vaccinated, and treated for any medical or behavioral conditions which would otherwise limit their chances of adoption. We then actively network our dogs to find them the perfect forever loving home. Rescue is undoubtedly hard and trying work, but it is entirely worth it to see the life of a dog saved. As a rescue, we believe it is our duty to save the dogs that really need our help; the dogs that need a little TLC, a little medical care, or just someone to believe in them again. Therefore, we save the dogs that are on their last days at the shelter or haven't even been given a chance to be adopted by the public. As much as we love those sweet puppy eyes, we think more of saving their mommy’s and daddy’s that have been shoved to the back of the shelter awaiting their fate.

Thank you for seeing what we do and loving us for it. It’s only because of our outstanding community, foster families, and volunteers that we can continue our efforts, we are 100% donation funded and every penny counts toward a dog in need. Please consider getting involved- foster, adopt, volunteer, share, donate!

As a foster based rescue, Underdog places dogs in temporary foster homes where they can decompress and get the love and affection that they need. Dogs are also vaccinated, spayed/neutered and receive any other medical treatment needed before finding their forever home.
