Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Meet Hazel: A Delicate Little Flower Ready to Blossom in Her Forever Home
Hazel is a sweet and gentle 3-year-old Terrier Pit Mix with a heart full of love. In October 2024, she gave birth to 9 beautiful puppies and made the journey from Texas to Illinois to ensure a bright future for them. While her pups are now in foster homes awaiting their forever families, it’s Hazel’s turn to find a family of her own.
At about 33 lbs (and likely not much more than 40 lbs at her healthiest), Hazel’s petite frame makes her a perfect fit for families with smaller children. She is playful but tender, earning her nickname, "a delicate little flower." Hazel’s personality is blossoming as she transitions from devoted momma to playful pup, enjoying life as it should be.
What Makes Hazel Special:
Gentle and Sweet: Hazel is kind-hearted and careful, even when she’s feeling playful. She’s learning to enjoy toys, loves chasing tennis balls in the yard, and is discovering the joy of being a dog.
Cat and Kid Approved: She’s gentle with children and has passed her cat test with flying colors—she’s a go!
Smart and Eager to Learn: Hazel knows “sit” and is eager to learn more with treat motivation. Her leash manners are excellent, and she’s showing potential for even more training.
House-Ready: Hazel does well outside of a crate when left alone, preferring to relax in the kitchen on her bed next to the air vent. She’s mostly accident-free with regular outdoor routines and sleeps soundly through the night in her own bed (or yours, if you’re open to a cuddle buddy!).
Loving Companion: Hazel adores being by your side, whether it’s snuggling on the couch or following you around.
Hazel came into rescue a bit underweight, but with love and care, she’s now thriving and showing her true self—a playful, affectionate pup who’s ready to be the center of someone’s world.
If you’re looking for a gentle, loving companion to complete your family, Hazel might just be the one. Come meet this amazing little flower—you’ll fall in love!

More about this rescue
We are a small 501 C3 nonprofit rescue located in Elburn, Illinois. In 2014, Safe Haven Dog Rescue became its own non-profit. We are licensed by the Illinois Agriculture Department.
The majority of our dogs and puppies are pulled from Kill Pounds and Shelters in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Illinois. We also accept local medical cases as often as our finances will allow.
Please take a few moments to read the stories about the dogs and puppies we have available for adoption. We disclose everything we know about the dogs, sometimes we know a lot often we know only that they were strays, thrown away on the side of the road, in the woods, or found in abandoned houses.
While we don’t always know their past we are certain that their future is much brighter.
We hope that you and your family are part of the future…..
