Story
Crash is an 11-month-old Border Collie with a perfect mix of playfulness and affection. He’s a fun-loving, easygoing boy who adores his humans and is always up for a game of chase or a play session with other dogs. He’s naturally curious and eager to please, making him a joy to have around. Since coming into foster care, Crash has really come out of his shell and has made great progress with his leash skills. He walks much better than before and is easy to redirect when he sees other dogs. He’s both crate-trained and house-trained, making the transition to a new home that much smoother. He enjoys watching the world from the window, running around in a fenced yard, and spending time with his favorite people. He gets along well with dogs of all sizes and does great with kids. His ideal home will have a secure fenced-in yard where he can stretch his legs and enjoy the outdoors. Crash is looking for a family that will keep him active, engaged, and most importantly, loved. If you’re looking for an affectionate, smart, and well-rounded companion, he’s ready to be your new best friend. At Green Dogs Unleashed (GDU), we are dedicated to ensuring the successful placement of our dogs in loving, permanent homes. Over the years, we have seen an increasing number of returns due to behavioral issues that could have been prevented with the right support. A significant percentage of these returns involve out-of-area clients or those who have not completed training with GDU. To address this, positive reinforcement training with Green Dogs Unleashed is required as a condition for all adoptions. Preference for this dog will be given to adopters who commit to signing up for and completing our six-week Canine 101 training class in person at our headquarters in Troy, VA. Secondary consideration will be given to a limited number of out-of-area adopters who agree to complete one private lesson with GDU, either in person or virtually, and attend a pre-approved positive reinforcement training class in their area. At Green Dogs Unleashed (GDU), we are committed to ensuring the successful placement of our dogs in loving, permanent homes. Over the years, we have seen an unprecedented number of returns due to behavioral issues that could have been avoided with the right support. A high percentage of these returns come from out-of-area clients or those who have not completed training with us at GDU. To address this, positive reinforcement training with Green Dogs Unleashed is required for all adoptions as a condition for adoption approval. This pup may need some extra time before being ready for extended in-person or group training. As such, we are happy to consider adopters either in the area or out of the area who will commit to attending one private lesson with GDU, either virtually or in person (in-person preferred), as a condition of adoption approval. This minimum fee includes DAPP, rabies if age appropriate,, heartworm test and preventative, if age appropriate, and flea and tick treatment, as well as neutering or spaying, if the animal is medically sound to undergo surgery. In an attempt to avoid tummy upset from a sudden change of food, the foster family may include a small, transitional bag of the food the dog/puppy has been eating. And if the dog/puppy has grown attached to a special item (like a toy or blanket), they may send that along, as well. */*/* Young puppies will receive age-appropriate vaccines, and will be spayed/neutered prior to adoption. Adopters may be required to provide additional puppy boosters and at 16 weeks of age, a rabies vaccine. Future annual vaccines, testing and monthly heartworm preventative are REQUIRED, and will be the financial responsibility of the adopter. *****Due to the sheer number of animals and applications in our program, coupled with a limited number of volunteers, applicants MUST have patience as we process applications.   If you do not hear back from us, the animal may have been adopted.   We strive to let people know but sadly cannot offer reasons for denial beyond that.  Any harassment of our volunteers will go unanswered and we will simply block you.   Our volunteers spend their time working hard to ensure the very best for each animal.   Please remember the animal, not the applicant, is our client.*****  ##2213515##

Story
Meet Adam Adam is a 5-month-old Border Collie with a unique and endearing personality. Born deaf, Adam has already overcome incredible challenges and is on a journey to discovering the joys of human connection. Rescued from a hoarding situation in Texas where he and 81 other dogs were left in outdoor pens with no human contact, Adam is learning to trust and adapt to his new life. This intensely smart and driven pup is full of potential. Adam has come a long way in just a few weeks, showing his confidence and curiosity through play and exploration. While he is still wary of people and startles easily, he loves playing with his foster’s big dog and is slowly warming up to human affection. Adam will thrive in a patient and understanding home that’s committed to helping him build confidence at his own pace. Adam is working on crate and house training and has shown great progress. Leash walking is new to him, and he’ll need continued positive reinforcement to tolerate leash pressure. However, he enjoys leisurely, self-directed walks and is discovering the world at his own pace. He’s also a quirky and playful guy with a love for coffee mugs, often carrying them to his bed to snuggle with. Adam’s shyness means he needs a family who will give him the time and space to come out of his shell. Despite his challenges, he is extremely outgoing and brave in his own way. His mischievous side adds to his charm, and his howls are sure to make you smile. If you’re looking for a special dog with a big heart and a bright future, Adam could be the perfect fit. He needs a loving home that will embrace his quirks and provide the patience and guidance he needs to flourish. Story
Meet Thane, a sweet, cuddly, and slightly clumsy four-month-old deaf Border Collie puppy who is eager to please and loves being close to his people. Thane is the definition of a "velcro dog" - he follows his foster mom everywhere and is happiest when he’s at her side, gazing up with his big, adoring gray eyes. Despite being deaf, Thane is a quick learner and thrives on routine and visual cues. He’s already a pro at “sit” and patiently waits for his kibble rewards. He learns best by observing his siblings and is always eager to follow their lead. Thane is a medium-drive pup for a Border Collie, meaning he has a wonderful balance of energy and calmness. He enjoys bursts of playtime but is equally content snuggling with his foster mom or quietly chewing on a puzzle toy. Thane adores kids and other dogs, making him a perfect fit for a family with both. He loves playing tug, chase, and engaging with his foster siblings, but his true joy comes from simply being near his humans. Though his siblings’ playful antics sometimes catch his attention, Thane always circles back to his foster mom, where he feels safest and happiest. Crate training is going well, and Thane associates his “room” with positive experiences like mealtime and naps. House training is a work in progress (he's just a baby), but with regular outdoor breaks, he’s making great strides. Thane’s affectionate nature, combined with his eagerness to learn, makes him a delight to train and spend time with. This goofy little guy is sure to steal hearts with his floppy-eared head tilt and oversized paws he occasionally trips over. He’s looking for a patient and loving forever home that understands the unique needs of a deaf dog and can provide him with the guidance, stimulation, and snuggles he craves. At Green Dogs Unleashed (GDU), we are dedicated to ensuring the successful placement of our dogs in loving, permanent homes. Story
In September 2022, my partner and I adopted a three-month-old puppy from the SPCA in Charlottesville, Virginia. Initially shy and anxious, Albus was listed as a Labrador, but a DNA test revealed he was a mix: 53% Australian Cattle dog, 19% Australian Shepherd, 17% Rottweiler, and 10% American Bulldog. Albus (now almost 2.5 years old) is a sweet, fun, and challenging dog. He is challenging due to his reactivity around strangers, which has improved greatly over the last year. We love Albus, and wish we did not have to rehome him - but we need to relocate for career purposes, and would also like to start a family. Having a baby, and managing a challenging dog is more than we feel we can handle. Albus would be a perfect companion in a home where he has space to run and play fetch, with no young children, and an experienced dog owner who can continue to train him. Because he can be reactive to strangers, a home that does not have lots of new people coming by would be more ideal.
