Story
Princess Poppy is a tall, slender, chihuahua/terrier mix. This girl is just about a year old and has a TON of energy. Her background is murky, having been passed from home to home due to no fault of her own; how she was first acquired is unknown to us but to the best of our understanding, her first home may have not been the safest or kindest. Those after did their best to care for her but were precarious in terms of stability and housing. The person that brought her in to us trying to find a good and stable home for her had her for a total of five days. Although very conflicted, she felt that it was not in Poppy's best interest to stay with her due to the age and size of her other dogs and Poppy's high energy level. However, she left Poppy in our care with a whole bunch of toys and her little travel crate. Although Poppy is much taller than the average Chihuhua, make no mistake about it -- the attitude is all chi--choosy, sassy, and demanding, and then playful and oh-so-loving in turn. She really enjoys her walks, and she's crazy about her toys. Though her adult weight sits right at 10-12 lbs, we think she'd make a fantastic "weekend warrior" -- when referring to dogs, this usually means a pup that adjusts well to your work schedule and is content with short walks and playtimes during the work week and then is given a a devoted outlet for her energy on the weekends (long walks, rambles/hikes in the woods, trick training, and maybe even some dog sports!) Princess Poppy travels well in the car. Although Poppy was said to have lived with children, she may not be the best fit for a louder household with younger children (as chihuahuas often are not). She has shown interest in making friends with dogs similar to her size. We were told that she was accustomed to spending all day in her crate and then getting to sleep in the human bed at night in her previous homes; the person who brought her in tried very hard to keep her crate time to a maximum of 4 hours at a time because she had spent so much time there. (Presumably she is crate trained, but we would hope that her kennel space would be larger, the time out of it longer and more fruitful, and that it would become a more positive place for her. She does easily go to her crate when she is unsure so her association with kennel time remains positive) We were told she does still occasionally struggle with pottying inside, but with proper outlets and a routine, there's no reason that that cannot become an issue of the past. Her good samaritan's response to the question, "Is there anything else her future owner should know?" informed us that Poppy: -Is a quick learner-Needs to feel safe due to having been moved around during her puppyhood-Needs reassurance and love-And loves to be held. This lovely girl is beyond clever and affectionate. She's such a fun and personable dog who is as passionate about her playtime and her training time as she is her cuddle time.
