Story
May need to eventually use a wheel chair due to arthritis in her backI am a sweet 5 yr old girl. I came to rescue via a vet visit. My owner wanted to euthanize me because I was in pain and he couldn’t afford to take care of me. I went into rescue to hopefully get better with medication. It was determined that I have DDD in my back (degenerative disc disease) for about 2 weeks I lost the use of my back legs. I was then placed in a wheelchair which I mastered quickly. My people had come to except that would be my life going forward. Boy did I fool them cause I determined that was not the life I wanted. First I started briefly walking on my knees then I slowly started standing up and taking a few steps. Next thing you know I’m running everywhere. My legs are still too weak to jump or stand up on my hind legs but my place is to always be in a humans lap to snuggle so I’m building those muscles back up. My fosters showed me so much love and patience I just wanted to be better.. My foster mom calls me her shadow.and her bed mole because I like to dwell under the covers. I follow her everywhere and love lap snuggles. My favorite place to sleep is under the blankets snuggled as close as I can get to my person.I have a favorite blanket that I like to suckle and nibble on. I am vocal but not as bad as most of my relatives usually are, I’m more of an alert system. I’m completely house trained and will let you know when I need to go out. I’m great with all dogs and cats but prefer not to share my persons lap although I will tolerate it if I have to. To apply for me please visit STFFAR. Org for an online application. December 13, 2024, 2:07 pm

Story
Meet Haynes, my five-year-old foster Chihuahua. This sweet boy came from a heartbreaking situation—a terrible puppy mill in Florida—where he never knew the warmth of love or the gentleness of a human touch. For the past three weeks, I've been fostering Haynes, helping him learn that not all humans are to be feared. He’s still very timid and scared, but every day, I see small signs of progress. He’s starting to trust me, little by little, and it’s such a privilege to watch his resilience unfold. While he’s not ready for snuggles just yet, I know the day will come when he’ll fully embrace the love and care he so deeply deserves. Haynes has a long road ahead, but he’s already a brave little soul. Haynes does well on a leash and enjoys leisurely strolls around the neighborhood. He’s house-trained and spends his days relaxing in his favorite spots, whether it’s his crate, nestled in the corner of the couch cushions, or tucked behind the sofa. Haynes would thrive in a calm and patient home environment, ideally one that is not too noisy. He would do well with or without other pets and could be a great match for families with older, gentle children who understand his need for space and time to adjust.

Story
Gibson recently spent time in a holiday foster home, where he showed just how sweet and adaptable he can be. He walks well on a harness without any issues and loves snuggling into blankets or anything soft. Though shy at first—often retreating under the bed when returning home—he warmed up significantly over the foster period, following the adults around the house and even starting to play with dog toys. Gibson was great with the foster's two cats, showing no aggression, growling, or attempts to bite. He's calm, sweet, and loves affection, often pawing at you for more pets if you stop. While not fully housebroken yet, he made progress and is learning quickly. Medicating him can be a bit challenging, but with patience and consistency, he could adapt over time. Gibson would thrive in a loving, adult only, home that can continue building his confidence and training while showering him with the affection he clearly adores.

Story
Meet Scooter, a senior Chihuahua with a youthful spirit. We estimate him to be around 10 years old but it`s hard to know for sure due to his previous rough way of life. He came into foster care in terrible condition, with little hair, lots of fleas, and lots of fear. He has slowly learned to trust his foster mom while his hair grew back and his belly grew bigger. Scooter is an independent soul and really enjoys his personal space. He is not a lap dog or a cuddle buddy, but he does make for great company. Scooter can usually be found on a fluffy dog bed or in his crate with the door open. He is fairly low energy but occasionally he does get the zoomies. Recently he has started to learn to play with other dogs and is building his confidence up every day. He lives with dogs of all sizes but seems to do best with small-medium dogs around his size. Scooter is doing much better with house training and it helps that he enjoys spending time outside. He likes to find a warm sunny spot to nap in, usually on the sidewalk or a patio. Since he does not do well with a leash, it would be best for him to have a confined outdoor space to let him get some fresh air and enjoy the weather. Scooter is looking for a calm, loving home where he can be part of a family and make up for his previous life of solitude. His ideal family will understand his need for personal space but still appreciate his company. If you`ve been looking for a low energy but adorable little guy to have around, right here he is! Adopt Scooter and you`ll not only gain a loyal friend, but you`ll also give this sweet senior the loving home he deserves. Scooter has been neutered, microchipped and kept current on vaccines and monthly preventatives. You can email julianshumate@gmail.com with any questions or fill out an application here: https://humanesocietyofwilkes.org/adopt/application/julians. To ensure your application was received please email the foster home. You can expect an email response within a week of applying.
