*** AVAILABLE BY APPOINTMENT ONLY*** Please email adoptions@savinggracenc.org if you're interested in scheduling an appointment to meet Essex. Are you someone who is "all in" when it comes to friendship? Are you looking for a canine companion who's going to be your "ride or die"? Well then Essex might just be the guy you've been waiting for. You see, like so many shelter dogs, Essex's life before Saving Grace probably held quite a bit of uncertainty. Through no fault of his own, he arrived at Saving Grace via one of our wonderful shelter partners who could see his amazing potential underneath a pretty scared exterior. Unsurprisingly. Essex was overwhelmed by the many changes that faced him, but within 12 hours in his new foster home, Essex's real and wonderful personality began to shine through. He quickly learned that a home could mean delicious snacks, friendly dog friends, soft beds, TOYS (!!!!), and nice people who will give you belly rubs and ear scratches and tell you that you are the very best boy. Essex is a dachshund-chihuahua mix, possibly with some type of terrier thrown in for good measure. He has the prettiest short, smooth, tan and white coat, and the most amazing ears that tune into every sound like the world's most efficient satellite dish. And yes, his eyes really ARE a gorgeous green-hazel almost exactly like a human's. Essex loves to run around the house and play, and the more toys he has at his disposal the happier he is. He is learning to walk on a leash and is making great progress for a pup who has likely never seen a harness or leash before. He is happy, funny, and full of joy with an exuberance for life that will make anyone laugh. All he wants is to love and please everyone around him and he is ready to learn how to do just that! Living in a house may be a new experience for Essex, but he sure is liking it so far... The television was definitely a new experience for him but he figured out fast that those humans in that screen were going to stay put. As you can imagine is true for any dog new to home-living, he will need ongoing work with his housebreaking. That said, he is doing well with crate-training and is content when crated for increasing periods of time, especially when he has his Kong. He is so smart that with consistency and kindness he is undoubtedly capable of learning just about anything very quickly. Because he can be apprehensive of new situations and new people while he is continuing to build his confidence in the world, he will need an adult-only, dog-experienced home with humans who are patient, kind, and will give him some time and space to learn, trust, and know his human family while setting fair boundaries that reinforce his positive behaviors. Once he learns that he can really trust you, he will give you his very best. He'll even let you give him a nail trim! In an ideal world, Essex would love to have a fenced yard, and a friendly and playful canine brother or sister who can show him the ropes would be great by Essex. He has great energy and will make an excellent hiking or walking companion once he masters his leash skills. The sky is the limit for this great boy who is full of endless potential. Are you someone who might be able to give him what he needs to be the great dog he is meant to become? In return, you are sure to receive unfailing loyalty and the friendship of a lifetime. Come meet this special guy... He could be the one you've been waiting for.

Story
Edith came to our rescue from a rural shelter where she had suffered from pyometria, an infection of the uterus that is 100% preventable if her previous owner had spayed her before. She has since been spayed, microchipped, is up to date on vaccines and HW-. She is a quiet house guest in her foster home, and enjoys laying on the orthopedic bed. She went to her first adoption event yesterday and enjoyed sitting in a volunteers lap the whole time! She is sweet and would be fine as an only dog, or with another nice chill dog. Please apply for this sweet little lady and give her some love in her senior years. apply.neshamarescue.org
