Story
This adorable happy carefree youngster Retriever mix is Francine. She arrived at the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 4/3 as a stray. She weighs 50 pounds and is about a year old. She is a sweet girl and we instantly became best buddies! She walks very nicely on a leash. She appears to have been well cared for as she has a shiny, glossy and soft coat. She is well mannered, yet frisky and perky. She is one spunky, tail-wagging girl with a pleasant and winsome personality. She is friendly and was more than happy to allow me to pet her. Can you tell that I am head-over-heels in love with this darling youngster?

Story
Max is looking for a committed owner this time around. He was originally adopted from the Mesquite Animal Shelter when he was a young puppy to people that lived in an apartment. Max is a 11 month old 60 pound retriever lab mix that was surrendered to our shelter on 1/28 because he got too big for an apartment. I definitely agree he is too big for an apartment!!!. He would be happy to have a yard so he can go out and play and blow off some steam, but then come in to enjoy being loved on by his new family. He sits for treats and takes them very gently. He does jump on you and would need to be taught not to do this. He also can be somewhat mouthy. The good news is that he wants to please and should be a quick study.. I don’t think he’s been given proper instruction. Also keep in mind he’s still a puppy! He’s very alert, happy, friendly, and playful. He would do well with an active family with older children,. He does have a pretty strong pull on the leash. He appeared to be intimidated by other dogs barking at him, but if you have another dog please ask the shelter for a dog test. The bonus is that Max is already neutered! He’s ready to go home with you.

Story
Meet Carmelo! He is a 1 yr old Lab/Retriever and Pointer mix that weighs 70lbs. He came into the Mesquite Animal Shelter as an owner surrender on 11/14. Reason for surrender was the owners were moving and could not take him. When Carmelo and I went outside in the yard or in front of the building it was easy to see how much he missed his family. He continued to look for them and wanted to go look for them. He is a big boy and does pull very strongly on a leash. He also will jump on you, so redirection/additional training may be needed. Having a very tall and secured yard so he can run and play in. He didn`t show any interest in toys, yet knows the sit command, At times he does not take treats gently, so some continual reminders to him would be necessary. He is a sweet boy and loves to be petted and given hugs. He has been well cared for and hopes to return to living indoors with his loving family. He didn`t show any interest in the other dogs barking at him, but we always advise to ask the shelter for a dog test if there will be another dog in the home. If you can offer this lovely boy a caring home of his very own, please come meet him.

Story
Most of us cannot imagine our family abandoning us. Well, Coconut didn’t either until one night he found himself tied to a tree behind the Mesquite Animal Shelter. He was scared and confused! He didn’t understand. Luckily employees spotted him there when they came to work in the morning and brought him into the safety of the shelter. Coconut is a one-year-old 62 pound retriever lab mix with attractive markings. He was a abandoned on 10/14. However, in spite of being left behind it appears he’s been well taken care of. He’s an active guy. His sense of smell is very keen. It was difficult taking pictures of him as he kept his nose to the ground. He does jump on you out of excitement and needs to be told to get down. He is active and agile. He could use some behavioral training to channel his energy. He sits for treats and does take them gently. He loves to be loved on (see last three photos). He’s very friendly and a happy guy. He would do well with a very active lively family. He appears to be housebroken. He has a strong pull on the leash, but then he was anxious to get out to do his business. He did not want to meet any other dogs. It appears he was intimidated by them. He needs a yard to explore, but then wants to come in to cuddle and share family time.

Story
This cute boy is a little on the chunky side and after spending time with him I soon understood why. He’s a little beggar and will sit in anticipation of a treat even before any have been offered. It was difficult taking pictures of him standing because he would sit looking longingly up at me licking his lips. Doc is a three year-old 48 pound mostly lab retriever with some Staffordshire terrier in the mix. He arrived at the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 4/1 as a stray. He’s got a cute face with alluring hazel eyes and a tail that wags constantly. He’s got a sweet easy-going personality. He’s curious and explored the yard looking out the gate. But after that preferred to spend most of his time chilling out with me. He does like to stay close. He’s alert, sweet, happy, well behaved, and energetic (not overly so). He doesn’t jump on you. He does sit for treats and takes them gently. He walks OK on a leash. He did his business in the yard. He wagged his tail meeting many dogs in the bay. However, when one barked at him he wasn’t happy. We suggest if you have another dog to ask the shelter for a dog test. With summer coming up he said it’s too hot outside and he wants to be inside under the air conditioning. Then in the winter he wants to snuggle up and stay warm next to you on the couch.

Story
Knut came to us at 3 weeks during a winter storm old and was one of the biggest babies we had seen. That is why we named him after a famous polar bear cub. We are unsure of his breed, and as he gets bigger our guesses keep changing. We do think he has some hound in him due to his elongated snout. He is now 9 months old and weighs 60 lbs. He is neutered, microchiped, and has had 3 rounds of vaccines. We expect him to be quite a large dog fully grown, possibly over 80lbs. However, Knut is a gentle giant. He is very sweet and passive and loves to play with the other dogs. But his favorite thing to do is eat. He is a little shy at first, but warms up quickly. He is ready for his forever home and a family that wants a big dog with a big heart.

Galinda is a bubbly and charming dog with a heart as big as her personality. Named after the iconic character from *Wicked*, she’s always ready to spread joy and sprinkle a little magic wherever she goes. Whether she’s prancing around the house or snuggling up for a cuddle, Galinda is the ultimate good girl, always brightening up her family’s day with her playful spirit and loving heart. Galinda is a small girl right now and is expected to be about 30-45lbs full grown. She so far has stayed petite but could get a little bigger.

Story
Hi! My name is Mina and I am three years old. I am a Retriever mix with some Great Dane attributes, big ole feet, tall, lean body and a long tail. I am a leaner and as sweet as pie. I eat, sleep and stay in my crate when my mom is not home and sometimes rest in there when I am tired. It is my safe space. Once a week, my mom takes me to visit a local daycare/boarding facility here in East Dallas to socialize and get my energies out. My two older brothers are not as high energy and playful so visiting with other dogs closer to my age and play style adds balance to our home life. I have not socialized with any feline friends or small children as of yet, but I am highly adaptable and always up for new adventures. My favorite past times include: fetching, playing chase, hunting squirrels, spending time with my humans and fellow doggies. I make friends wherever I go and love attention and companionship. I am very obedient and know a few commands:sit, lay down, come. Plus, I am a good listener and fast learner, especially if treats are involved! I also walk well on a leash and love to ride in the car. Mom and I are working to correct a few of my habits and are seeing good results with consistency. If you are looking for a lovebug, loyal, all-around best friend, look no further...I am your girl!! XOXO, Mina

Story
Belly rubs, kisses, and hugs - that's what Lady has been searching for since August 2023 when she joined the Angie's Friends family! She was found on the streets by a Good Samaritan who cared for her for a month, but was too elderly to keep Lady long-term. They asked Angie for help and Angie's Friends has been on the hunt for a furever family for Lady ever since. Lady has a microchip and the owners were contacted, but never returned the calls. Lady is a beautiful, friendly, affectionate lab mix. She has some work to do on her leash skills, but Lady bonds very tightly with her 'leader' and really wants to please, so she'll improve rapidly with practice! She's a shy girl and can be a little skittish when she's in a new situation. But once she feels confident, she's ready for that end goal: belly rubs, hugs, and kisses. Lady is good with other dogs and would be a fantastic addition to your family! October 13, 2024, 11:35 pm
