Story
This handsome fella is entering the FREEDOM TAILS program in December and will graduate in late February. More information coming soon!Find out more about our Freedom Tails program at https://pawsgh.org/freedomtails/12/12/34Hello, my name is Beau and I am a dog handler for Freedom Tails. I have decades of experience training dogs and working on shaping dog behavior. This big handsome boy is Lenny. He’s a little over two years old and weighs about 80lbs. He’s most likely a mix of Red Mastiff and Chesapeake Bay Retriever based off of his handsome features. He’s 100% an athlete. Lenny is very attentive and curious. HIS EYES! His eyes are captivating and will be focused on you when you meet, that’s guaranteed! Lenny loves to run, jump and chase toys when he’s outside playing. Inside the house he’s a lazy snuggle bug. 12/19/24Hello, Beau here! I’m Lenny’s handler this time around. I plan on teaching Lenny how to be a little more patient and how to not get too fixated on things… Lenny will be learning the following cues with both a verbal and visual (hand signal) command - Sit Down Stand Come Wait Look Place Kennel Crate By me Go see Find it Drop it Back Up Off Stay Lenny is already potty trained and loose leash training is another thing we will focus on this time around. 12/26/24Hello, it’s me Lenny and I wanted to share a little bit about my experience with you. I was adopted from PAWS a little over a year ago as a Freedom Tails graduate. I had a wonderful life with people who understood me and were putting in the time and effort to help me through life. The thing is I love to play. I love to play sooooo much, I can be a little bit much for small kids and well, my humans are having a baby! Since I was no longer a perfect match for my humans, I came back to my Freedom Tails family. It’s been great! I got to see some of my favorite people again and I definitely recognized my new primary handler Beau. We had a lot of great times together when I was here before. I’ve been busy brushing up on some of my cues but mostly working on not being too excited when I meet people. Well, off to work I go! LENNY01/02/25Fact. Lenny is a sweet and sensitive boy. Fact. Lenny can jump right onto anything that’s 4ft or below. Fact. Strangers need to approach Lenny calmly and with respect. Fact. If not approached calm and respectfully, Lenny will have that stranger backup using his voice. Fact. Lenny LOVES TO BE EXCITED! One of my favorite things about Lenny is his size. I love big dogs and Lenny is a big guy! He’s 25 inches tall at the shoulders and is in great shape at 80lbs. He is a machine! He can run and jump and play all day long. I would imagine he’d also like the water. The other thing I love about Lenny are his intelligent eyes. Lenny can have a crazy level of energy outside when it’s play time, but he’s a huge SNUGGLE BUG when we’re inside. Lenny’s favorite treats are pieces of pig ear I hide in his Kong. He also loves a lick mat with peanut butter smeared all over. Both provide mental stimulation and oral hygiene. Lenny is very eager to please everyone, but especially his people.______________________________________________________________________________01/09/25The cues Lenny and I are concentrating on this week are wait and stay. He’s getting wait down very well so we are working on applying it to any citation that comes up. His stay is improving as well! The cue’s he knows well are sit, down, stand, by me, look, kennel, crate, place, find it, up, off, give, drop it, take it, and go see. We’re working on back, leave it, and focus. He is great on the leash unless something really captures his attention. But don’t worry, we’re working on that as well. Lenny is fully potty trained.______________________________________________________________________________Lenny 1/23/25Lenny would thrive living with someone who will let him be by them all day, so he can keep an eye on them. He can be trusted alone but he just wants to be with his people. He can be great with some other dogs but he can be too much for some. There are dogs he is too interested in that he flat out should not be around. Also, there are some he just doesn’t like. Same with people. Lenny can be so sweet to people he knows and is comfortable with but can be standoffish with strangers or people he knows that are acting out of the ordinary. Lenny thrives when learning even a simple little game of having him interact with an object in a certain way. For example, he knows how to touch things with his nose or paw at them with his paw. You can pick a random object and teach him to interact with it, after teaching him the name of it. He loves picking things up that you drop, including his leash to give you the handle. Lenny is ALWAYS up for any mental stimulation and LOVES a good treat- especially one that he has to work out of a kong or another similar toy. Lenny is an athlete and needs exercise. Even a good long walk with plenty of things to sniff will do. I would recommend looking up all the advice/warning of having a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. These sites will give you an idea of Lenny’s needs perfectly. I am sure he is a mix of one in both looks and temperment. Please apply to adopt at: http://www.pawsgh.org

Story
Shadow 2/6/25Shadow is very bright and she is learning fast. She is potty trained and walks well on leash–when she is not frightened. Shadow knows the following cues: by me, look, crate, kennel, gimme, sit, down, stay, come, wait, off, place, go see, up, and leave it. We are working on back, stand, and find it. Shadow is very well behaved and able to execute her cues in what she perceives as a safe environment. Right now, her safe environments are the cell, in the H3 yard, and also on walks and adventures; away from people and banging noises. I know, one can only imagine what has led to this. When not distressed by fear, Shadow is graceful, attentive, and obedient. Of course, when her fear kicks in, usually over sharp noise, or strangers approaching for pets or sniffs, all training goes out the window. Please do not scold her. Just get her calmed down, away from the scary stuff; and your loving, obedient dog will return.Shadow 1/30/25Hello, my name is Derrick, Shadow’s primary trainer. What an incredibly beautiful female black lab/hound mix! She is 12 months old and weighs 75 lbs. Shadow is fearful and skittish. I hate to think about the past circumstances that contributed to that, but she is also incredibly loving, loyal, and affectionate to her person. Right now that is my privilege. She is also very bright with a personality that is a joy to be around. She is excelling in her obedience training.Sometimes she may appear to be stubborn, but she is only distracted by the perceived scary stuff around her. In her safe places, her yard and the house, she performs cues like a champ. Shadow is exceptionally loyal and once bonded, she will likely stay glued to your side when on walks without a leash. She loves dogs, but fears people–unless they have a dog with them! She definitely has an alarm system, but does not have a single aggressive bone in her body. She thinks nail clipping is a fun game. Shadow is going to bring some lucky person immense happiness.Shadow 3/6/25My Freedom Tails handler is great. Mr Steilman has worked with dogs extensively in the past, and I could tell right away that he loves dogs and loves to see them learn and grow into stellar pets. One of the things that stood out right away about my trainer was that he recognized my fearfulness. Most people just think I’m being stubborn, but my handler understood that I was just scared. He has been sooo patient with me, and as a result, he has taught me so much and made the world a little less scary. Concerning energy levels….I think my handler is a little more active than me, but he brings me along everywhere and encourages me to come out of my shell. So yeah, Freedom tails is pretty amazing, but I did teach my trainer at least one thing. He knows I love hanging out in my crate where it is warm and safe. He uses the crate to reinforce the cues he wants me to perform. For example, if I perform a series of cues such as sit, down, and stand he will then let me into my crate. He thinks he’s pretty smart, but I’m really good at my cues: I trick him into letting me into the crate all the time! Adopt me! I am cute! Please apply to adopt at: http://www.pawsgh.org

Story
WOOF - MEET TEAK! Teak is a young and energetic red lab/pit mix in need of a foster or forever home! On paper he's 2 years old, but we think he's just a pup, around 1 to 1-1/2. Teak is an 80-pound happy boy who will benefit from some basic training and commands. He's a smart learner, and he needs someone who would love to help him transform into the best dog ever! He is learning slowly to walk on a leash, as nobody ever taught him before, so would do well with someone who has a backyard and room to run, while he gets up to speed. Teak was rescued from an overcrowded California shelter, and was one lucky boy to get saved. He's a handsome dog with a gorgeous red coat, and is always happy to see his person. He would also do well with an active person or people who can take him for hikes and other outings. Please email for an application.

Story
MEET HOWIE! This happy, gentle lab/pit mix is a loverboy! Howie is 5 years young and has a heart full of love to give. He was rescued from a California shelter in very rough shape - he had major skin issues/hair loss and had clearly been neglected, but now he looks so much better! He's appreciative of love and attention and is a very affectionate boy. He's a big snuggler and will want to share your bed. He loves going for walks and other outings. He is good with some dogs but not others, so would probably thrive as the only dog in the home, or with a submissive female. He's been waiting a long time for his own home, and we're hoping 2025 is his year! Howie currently needs a foster or forever home. Please email for an application.

Story
MEET SWEET LUKE! Luke is a happy & lovable 3-1/2-year-old Pit/Boxer mix in need of a foster or forever home! He had been adopted, but his owner died, and so he went back into the rescue. Luke is currently in the greater Seattle area. He has a wonderful disposition; he gets along great with other dogs and is very loving and affectionate to his people. He also loves to fetch balls and bring them back to you. Luke also isn't a big barker, unless someone barks at him. He walks well on a leash, and is a strong boy. He doesn't shed much! Luke also loves treats and is very treat motivated. He was rescued from a California shelter originally after he became urgent for lack of space. While there, he was kenneled with another female dog and did great. He's been tested with numerous dogs and has done well with everyone. He's a loving, easygoing boy. Luke currently weighs about 60 lbs and needs a foster or forever home. Please email for an application.

Story
Hi - I'm Hank! I'm a 2-1/2-year-old Lab-Pit mix waiting for a foster or forever home! I'm a sweet and friendly boy, though can be a bit shy when I first meet you. I'm also pretty mellow, and incredibly smart and curious! When I go to my new home, I will need some time to adjust, but once I trust you we will be friends and companions forever. I'm mellow on a leash but am a strong boy. I do OK with some dogs but I do not like it when hyper dogs get in my face. (Who does?) I also have a potential to be a great protector. Can you foster or adopt me? I weigh about 60 lbs. Please email for an application.

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Check Me out ! Meet Coconut!  Coconut is a delightful young dog who has overcome a challenging beginning when she was abandoned by those meant to care for her. Now thriving in a nurturing foster home with ASR, she has blossomed into a friendly and energetic companion at around 2 years old. Weighing around 40 lbs, Coconut is playful and has mastered several commands, being both crate and house trained for peaceful nights. While she enjoys the company of other dogs, she requires a proper introduction to understand their play styles. Coconut tends to have a strong personality, so she would thrive best with dogs that have a gentler demeanor as her companions. In her foster environment, she particularly flourishes with dogs of similar size and age. Although she can be a bit protective and may bark at strangers, she is affectionate with people, relishing cuddle time on the couch or bed. A yard would be perfect for her to expend her energy, and she has a special love for water, especially when the hose is on. To truly thrive, Coconut would benefit from an owner who understands her breed and can match her lively spirit, making her an ideal companion for families with older children who can appreciate her vibrant personality. She is available for foster to adopt! If you would like more info or would like to schedule a playdate, please fill out an application HERE. Coconut's adoption fee is $495 and includes her spay, vaccinations, microchip, and flea treatment.  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.March 5, 2025, 3:07 pm
