Story
Shadow 2/6/25Shadow is very bright and she is learning fast. She is potty trained and walks well on leash–when she is not frightened. Shadow knows the following cues: by me, look, crate, kennel, gimme, sit, down, stay, come, wait, off, place, go see, up, and leave it. We are working on back, stand, and find it. Shadow is very well behaved and able to execute her cues in what she perceives as a safe environment. Right now, her safe environments are the cell, in the H3 yard, and also on walks and adventures; away from people and banging noises. I know, one can only imagine what has led to this. When not distressed by fear, Shadow is graceful, attentive, and obedient. Of course, when her fear kicks in, usually over sharp noise, or strangers approaching for pets or sniffs, all training goes out the window. Please do not scold her. Just get her calmed down, away from the scary stuff; and your loving, obedient dog will return.Shadow 1/30/25Hello, my name is Derrick, Shadow’s primary trainer. What an incredibly beautiful female black lab/hound mix! She is 12 months old and weighs 75 lbs. Shadow is fearful and skittish. I hate to think about the past circumstances that contributed to that, but she is also incredibly loving, loyal, and affectionate to her person. Right now that is my privilege. She is also very bright with a personality that is a joy to be around. She is excelling in her obedience training.Sometimes she may appear to be stubborn, but she is only distracted by the perceived scary stuff around her. In her safe places, her yard and the house, she performs cues like a champ. Shadow is exceptionally loyal and once bonded, she will likely stay glued to your side when on walks without a leash. She loves dogs, but fears people–unless they have a dog with them! She definitely has an alarm system, but does not have a single aggressive bone in her body. She thinks nail clipping is a fun game. Shadow is going to bring some lucky person immense happiness.Shadow 3/6/25My Freedom Tails handler is great. Mr Steilman has worked with dogs extensively in the past, and I could tell right away that he loves dogs and loves to see them learn and grow into stellar pets. One of the things that stood out right away about my trainer was that he recognized my fearfulness. Most people just think I’m being stubborn, but my handler understood that I was just scared. He has been sooo patient with me, and as a result, he has taught me so much and made the world a little less scary. Concerning energy levels….I think my handler is a little more active than me, but he brings me along everywhere and encourages me to come out of my shell. So yeah, Freedom tails is pretty amazing, but I did teach my trainer at least one thing. He knows I love hanging out in my crate where it is warm and safe. He uses the crate to reinforce the cues he wants me to perform. For example, if I perform a series of cues such as sit, down, and stand he will then let me into my crate. He thinks he’s pretty smart, but I’m really good at my cues: I trick him into letting me into the crate all the time! Adopt me! I am cute! Please apply to adopt at: http://www.pawsgh.org
