Our sweet gentle giantess Hazel is ready for her forever home. Hazel is a favorite of the HSOC volunteers. She is laid-back, loves belly rubs, and is very tolerant of having her body touched. She loves attention from people. Hazel went through her training in basic commands and manners in Camp K-9 at the Kentucky State Reformatory. She should do fine in a home with older children. No cats, please! If you have a dog, we could facilitate a meet and greet, but in general, she would do best as the only animal. Hazel is a Mastiff mix who is a little over 3 years old. MANNY is a 4 year old, male mastiff/boxer mix that weighs 75 lbs. He's big, he's chunky and basically a big squishmallow. Manny spent quite some time in the shelter as he really takes time with anything new. He sets the pace, and its slow, to try to understand what's going on. Our Paws Behind Bars prison dog training program provides a dog more than obedience training so using this as a socialization experience was very appropriate for Manny. He has bonded closely to his inmate and, one step at a time, the world is becoming a more comfortable place. And why do we call him a squishmallow? Manny fashions himself a lap dog. And if he can't fit in your lap, rolling over for belly rubs are the next best thing. Manny's perfect home will be a quiet, patient one. He behaves well around other dogs and believe it or not, his prison best friend is Bolt, our energetic husky mix. That said, his inmate is the center of his world. If you're that person looking for your canine "soul" mate, Manny's the dog! As much love as you give him, he'll give it back! RETTA is a 4 year old female mastiff mix that weighs 83 lbs. She came to us as a shelter stray and in her case, we know the backstory. It's sad. She belonged to a gentleman who took good care of her. But he passed away and not long after, RETTA found herself alone and running. Her refuge? The median of I71. During this time, she must have been hit as there is an old break in her back leg. After months, she was trapped by animal control. It doesn't take dogs long to revert to a feral state. Fortunately for RETTA, her years as being a loyal companion were not completely forgotten. That said, dogs never jump right back to happy and wagging. It's taken us another couple months to find a glimmer in her eye and a wag to her nubbins of a tail. She is relearning how to play with other dogs (which she can do!) go through doorways without hesitation, and gain the trust of a human. At this point, she warms up to women quickly. She is a wonderful, beautiful dog that never counted on her life being turned upside down. She is healing inside and out but will need a special home.
