Adoptions must be about within an hour of Wilmington, DE for our volunteers to be able to conduct an in-person home visit Meet Blackberry! Blackberry is a 10-year-old, 10 lb mini Poodle mix who was surrendered by his owner. He had been sadly neglected and it was time for a new beginning. Blackberry was brought into our care and immediately received a sedated shave and was neutered. It was discovered that one of his eyes was missing, and the other one was so damaged, it had to be removed. Although Blackberry is deaf as well as blind, he doesn’t miss a trick. This amazing pup can wake from a sound sleep, sniff his way across the room, and jump on the sofa to find his foster mom eating cereal without him! Blackberry is very close to being housebroken. He will wear diapers, but only if he needs to be alone for several hours. He hasn’t had any accidents. Blackberry can’t do stairs, but very quickly learned where the front door is and how to step down out of the house. Blackberry doesn’t require any monthly prescription medications but will take Trazadone on occasion when he needs to be alone for several hours to avoid separation anxiety. Due to being both blind and deaf, he would be happiest to have an owner who is home most of the time. He likes to know his people are near and will cry out if he feels lost. Blackberry gets along well with other dogs but doesn’t like cats. He would do best in an adult-only home or with children that know how to be gentle. Blackberry walks on a leash but tends to criss cross and would be happier with a fenced-in yard. Blackberry is a super sweet pup who enjoys greeting people. He loves to have his belly rubbed, get picked up, and enjoys lots of cuddles. He happily sleeps in bed with his foster mom and is a certified couch potato. If you need an adorable, furry friend to keep you company and make you smile, please apply today!

Story
Meet Cookie. She is one of the poodles we rescued from the puppy mill back in January. Cookie is 6 years old, and she weighs 12 lbs. She was a mill momma most of her life. When she came to our rescue, she was really shut down and scared. She is still working on trusting humans. She will sit on the fosters lap and let her pet her for a little bit before she jumps off (which is progress). She absolutely loves dogs of all sizes. She went to the vet and was tested for hw and Lymes disease and was negative! She did have an ear infection that was treated with antibiotic ear drops. She also received her updated vaccines. She was spayed and had dental work done to remove all of her infected teeth. Cookies perfect home would have to have another dog that way, she can learn from them that not all humans are bad. We don't know what all happened to this sweet dog. We did everything we can for her and now we hope that there is someone out there for her that has patience and understanding that it will take some time for her to learn to trust her new family. If you are interested in adopting her, please send us a message or fill out an application.

Please note that because all our dogs live in foster homes, we are unable to set up meetings with a dog unless we have a completed adoption application on file. Adoptions must be about within an hour of Wilmington, DE for our volunteers to be able to conduct an in-person home visit. Meet Flora! Flora is a 6-year-old, 18 lb. Poodle mix who was rescued and brought to a shelter as part of a cruelty investigation. Partially paralyzed and suffering from chronic infections, this sweet girl needed a second chance. Flora was treated for her skin infections and a UTI. She had an extensive orthopedic workup, and it was determined that she will most likely not regain the use of her back legs. That being said good luck keeping up with this pup! Flora loves her wheelchair and zooms around in it every chance she gets. She can also scoot herself around the house with no problems. Flora is able to go to the bathroom without assistance but does wear a diaper. It will need to be changed several times a day. Paralyzed pups can be more prone to UTIs, so good hygiene is important and there may be some extra trips to the vet. (She does great at the vet) To help prevent urinary infections, Flora takes supplements and probiotics that cost $45 a month. Due to her sad start in life, Flora tends to be wary of new people and experiences. She will give a bark and try to leave the room. If her family goes slow with her, and lets her take her time, Flora will thrive. She is good with other dogs and would do best in a quieter home with no small children. Flora loves to be cuddled, picked up, and play with toys. She is happy sleeping in a dog bed and can play independently as well. One look in those big, brown eyes and your heart will melt. All Flora needs is a family that sees how special she is, and that a little extra work is nothing compared to the love she will give you in return. Please apply today!
