Story
Every minute matters when it comes to rescuing a Shih Tzu.  We may get a short notice that someone needs to surrender their dog or a puppy mill dog needs a temporary home. We can’t help if we don’t have families willing to foster, and we are always in need of more foster homes! If you live in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area and want to help save lives, please complete either our online Foster Sign-Up or download a word version here: http://www.northstarshihtzurescue.org/foster/ (please note: neither dog pictured are available to foster or adopt, both are in their forever homes) NorthStar Shih Tzu Rescue exists to benefit both Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs and the people of our community. We operate as a no-kill rescue that provides rescue and adoption services, and meaningful outreach programs in order to advance the welfare of these companion animals, to serve and educate our community, and to make a positive, loving impact on the lives of both. NorthStar, located in Excelsior, MN, actively works to rescue Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs from dangerous environments and shelters with the ultimate goal of placing them in loving, permanent, adoptive homes. We rescue unwanted, abandoned, and abused dogs. We have them vaccinated, micro-chipped, spayed or neutered, provide other medical care, and rehabilitate them in carefully selected foster homes. We also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on the benefits of adopting an animal in need as well as responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, good nutrition, and positive behavior training. We strive to increase public awareness about companion animal overpopulation, commercial breeders, and to offer solutions to end the killing of adoptable animals. We work in alliance with local animal shelters, pounds, other rescue groups, and humane society organizations to ensure these animals are not forgotten. Story
Sadie is 5 years old and weighs 11 lbs. She is white and red in color. Sadie is up to date on vaccines and is spayed and just recently had a dental and just finished all her meds.   She has been dealing with alopecia, but it is under control and now has no hair loss.  You will need to continue giving her Omega 3 and a healthy diet.  If there’s a reoccurrence of hair loss she may need to see a vet dermatologist. Sadie is a sweet little girl.  She’s very loving and scared at the same time as she came from a mill.  She snuggles up to her foster at bed time and needs to be close. She gets along with her pups and isn’t aggressive at all.   Her personality is just now coming out, she gets so excited when she sees her foster  and when it’s time to eat and at snack time.   When she wags her tail her whole bottom wiggles, so cute.     She will follow you around when outside and keep a close eye on you.  Sadie isn’t fully house trained, she loves to mark, but since her spay, it has reduced.  In the house we still use doggy diapers.  She’s still learning the word NO.  More training will be required, along with leash training.   She loves to be called a good girl. She gobbles her food, and tends to throw it up afterwards, so until she slows down on her own, she will need a Slow-Feed Dog Bowl.   The perfect home for Sadie;      Someone who will enjoy her as much as she will enjoy you.  Preferably someone who is home a lot.  No small children but older is fine.   An established dog in home to help teach her how to continue to be a dog.  She watches her fosters dogs and catches on fast, but she is still adjusting to a home and humans.    A calm home is best.  She loves to sleep in bed, a crate is not recommended     Sadie will feel more comfortable sleeping in your bed.  She doesn’t like to be alone.  We have enjoyed and love fostering her.     If you think Sadie might be the perfect fit for you, please apply!Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.November 1, 2024, 5:42 pm

Story
Hi! My name is Parker and I am from Minnesota. Parker is such a sweet little boy. He's quiet (except when someone's at the door), housebroken, gets along well with my Corgi mix dog, seems to pay very little attention to the cat, walks well on leash and is generally very easy to have around. I have not had him around any children. He sleeps in a dog bed in my bedroom and does not seem to rouse at all during the night. He's a great, gentle little dog. He does not like being in a crate so I have let him have free rein around the house. I think Parker would be a perfect fit for a quieter household and he seems to like having another dog around.

In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you! Apollo is a six-year-old twelve-pound male Shih Tzu. He came into rescue because his owner didn’t have time to devote to him and he was unfortunately left alone all day. He is now enjoying his foster mom's attention, and is a very happy boy. Now he is receiving the attention he deserves, and now that he has also been spruced up a bit with a fresh, new haircut he is a very handsome boy. Apollo has one of the best personalities that his foster mom, the veterinarian and staff, and the groomer have ever seen. Everyone has commented on how well behaved and endearing he is. He's so pliable and just goes with the flow. He's fine to entertain himself as he just hangs out near his foster mom while she works from home. He often snuggles with his foster fur brother and respects that his older foster fur sister prefers to be on her own. He sleeps with his foster mom and the other dogs in her big bed. He enjoys his quiet time and will seek you out if he wants to snuggle, but he always wants to be nearby. He's just so adorable and sweet. Apollo eats very well and is house trained. In the colder winter days, he heads right out to his foster mom's fenced yard, does his business, and then heads right back in to stay warm. He enjoys his walks on the leash and loves exploring, but gets cold quickly, so he doesn’t like to stay out for very long. He sometimes stays home while the foster siblings go for a walk because he's just too cold, and he does not mind being alone for a while and makes himself comfortable inside. He often wears a sweater indoors to stay warm. These are the requirements for Apollo’s new family: 1. Someone who is home much of the day. Apollo has been neglected and alone for all of his life, and he deserves to be in a family where that won’t happen again. 2. A family with children over the age of ten will be considered if the children have had experience in appropriate interaction with a small dog. But he is not accustomed to a home with lots of activity and a quiet home is an absolute must for him. 3. A home with another small dog would be okay, but Apollo would also love to be the center of his family’s life and get plenty of attention. 4. Must live within 75 miles of New Brighton, MN. 5. Family is encouraged to attend the Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held each year in September. Apollo is current on vaccinations, microchipped and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. He will be neutered and have a dental with extractions on March 12th. Applications are being accepted now for his adoption, but he cannot go to his new home until all medical procedures are completed and he has recovered. Apollo's adoption fee is $370.00 plus $33.39 sales tax for a total of $403.39. To meet Apollo, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see him and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at the Southtown PetCo in Bloomington, MN

Peanut is a 10 pound, five year old male Shih Tzu mix who was surrendered to rescue because his owner could no longer properly care for him due to lack of time. He has been SUCH a joyful addition to our rescue. Peanut is VERY cuddly and loves to be the center of your attention. He will spend the majority of his day cuddled up next to you or following you around. He does love to play fetch with smaller, fluffy toys and does great on a leash. While he is currently fostered with another larger dog, Peanut would probably prefer to be the only dog in your house. Mainly because if he sees you giving attention to another dog, then he will come right up and try to steal that attention to himself! He prefers to be right by your side, does great on car rides and absolutely LOVES meeting new people. Seriously, he's never met a stranger. He has a good recall with his name, and we are working on sit and other typical commands. He currently goes outside about 4-6 times a day, and is pretty good about informing you if it's time for him to go out. He does have a tendency to mark in carpeted areas if other pets have marked there, otherwise he is pretty well housetrained. He loves his foster parents’ fenced in yard, but he wants you out there with him and you will have to encourage him to go potty some of the time! Peanut is a younger, active little man who wants to be your whole world. He loves to be around you and play fetch at least 3 times per day. We are hoping his new family will be able to be home with him for the majority of the day and also find a family that will include him and make it a priority that he can join all activities. - Following are the requirements for Peanut's new family: Peanut is still a young dog. Because Shih Tzus often live 16+ years, applications will only be considered from age appropriate individuals who will be able to provide the care and activity necessary for the rest of his life. A family who can be home with Peanut for much of the day for companionship and also to enable him to go outside regularly. - Peanut is not high energy, but he still needs a family that can provide appropriate mental and physical stimulation for him. This includes daily walks and providing training, activity and the stimulation needed for a dog of his age. - It is unknown how Peanut is with children. Applications will be considered if children are over the age of ten and have had previous experience interacting gently with a small dog. ·A secure fenced yard would be great, but is not a deal breaker as long as Peanut can have other means of outdoor activity. · Peanut could live with other pets, as long as they mostly ignored him. But he probably would prefer to be an only dog who could have your undivided attention. · Live within 40 miles of Coon Rapids, MN. · Agree to attend the annual Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held in September each year. Peanut is neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped, and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. He is scheduled to have a dental on March 17th, but applications are being accepted now for his adoption. His adoption fee is $370.00 plus $33.39 sales tax, for a total of $403.39. To meet Peanut, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Chico is an 11 pound, 8 year old male Shih Tzu Yorkie mix. He was given to our rescue because his owner moved to an assisted living place where no animals were allowed. Chico is a friendly little guy and likes to greet people and other dogs while out on walks. He will sometimes play fetch in the house, but only for a short while. But what he loves most is joining his foster dog sibling outside to chase the resident rabbits and squirrels around the yard. He will need a fenced yard because he can be a little escape artist. His foster parents use a whistle to call him back to the door, and he seems to respond well to this. Chico is house trained and does alert you at the back door when he wants to go outside for his bathroom break, although we suggest that he just be on a regular schedule of going out about every four hours. Chico needs exercise every day - he walks over a mile a day, chases the rabbits and squirrels in the backyard, he briefly plays indoors with his toys. Chico is friendly and comfortable with meeting new people, either on walks or in the home. He would do best in a home where someone is home most of the day. He has a bit of separation anxiety and his new family must understand how to help him feel more secure and overcome his anxiety. He enjoys riding in the car and it would be great if his new family will include him in their daily activities, wherever they go. He is okay with another small dog in the home who has similar energy and age. He sleeps in his bed in the bedroom at night, although he would probably love sleeping in bed with his new family. These are the requirements for Chico’s new home: 1. Someone who is home most of the day and will include Chico with them throughout the day. 2. An adults only home or a home with children over the age of ten who have demonstrated that they know how to engage in a gentle, respectful way with small dogs. 3. A home with another small dog in the home, or in a home as an only dog. 4. A fenced yard would be great, because Chico loves exploring freely. If a fenced yard is not available, the family must be able to take him on a long walk every day – at least over one mile, and provide additional play time for him. 5. Never use a retractable leash – doing so will violate the adoption contract. 6. Live within 30 miles of Inver Grove Heights, MN. 7. Hopefully attend the annual Shih Tzu Rescue annual reunion held in September of each year. Chico is neutered, has had a dental, is current on vaccinations, microchipped and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. His adoption fee is $320.00 plus $28.88 sales tax for a total fee of $348.88. To meet Chico, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see him and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at the Southtown PetCo in Bloomington, MN.
