Story
Meet Bernard! He is a 3yr old neutered male American Pitbull Terrier/Dutch Shepherd mix that weighs 62lbs. He came into the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 11/17/2023 as a stray. This is one very special guy! He doesn't like being in his kennel and that is completely understandable. Once he is out, his entire disposition changes and you feel it as he walks calmly next to you with his tail held high. Not only is he very handsome, but he has a sweet, easy going personality, and always will flash you a smile. He is a very sweet, easy going boy that is affectionate and loving. He is well mannered, gentle and will put his head in your lap for pets. Walking past other dogs he did not show any interest, but we do always ask if there is another dog in the home please ask the shelter for a dog test. Bernard would make a great family companion. Having his own secured backyard to play in, but back inside where it is cool, to be close to his human companions is his dream. Can you help him make his dream come true? Come meet this great boy!

Story
Meet Mia, an American Pit Bull/Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix that was brought to the Mesquite Animal Shelter as a stray on 4/19. Mia is more than ready to leave the confines of the shelter after 3 months and settle into a home in which she will be cherished and loved. She weighs about 45 pounds, is 4-5 years old and is spayed. She came in looking as though she had not been well cared for with scrapes on her face, scruffy fur, some flaky scaly skin, and underweight, but with a daily healthy food and the care she has received she looks far more healthy. She has a moderate activity level and does jump on you some, though not excessively. She does fine on a leash. She has had at least one litter of pups. Mia is happy to receive treats and does so politely. She's friendly and likes to receive loving attention. She's a playful girl and enjoys toys. She found the cozy doggie bed in the room in which I did her eval and she enjoyed the soft and comfortable feel of it. This tail-wagging, lively gal would be thrilled to find her very own loving home in which she would be allowed to live inside because it seems highly probable that she has been a backyard dog. Won't you please assist Mia in finding her dream home?

Story
Jasmine, adopted from Houston's Barc shelter in 2020, is about 7 years old now, with an unknown past likely involving recent motherhood prior to being fixed. At home, she's a cuddle bug, especially with men, but is vocal around big trucks and strangers at the door. She greets visitors with enthusiasm, then quickly becomes submissive, rolling around playfully. She is a very high energy dog. I took her for walks everyday as well as some occasional runs. She can run very fast for a very long time, pulling most of the way. IMPORTANT: The reason why we are rehoming her is because she recently had an incident in which she bit a four year old child. We reported the bite and she spent 10 days in quarantine observation. After investigation she was approved for rehoming. Prior to that she has had several issues with dogs. She is considered a reactive dog, which means she should be kept away from all other dogs. She has not bitten another dog unprovoked, but has when she has felt threatened.

Story
I'm just a girl looking for love! My name is Darla and I'm hoping for my fairytale ending! I'm very pretty if I do say so myself. I'm affectionate and love to snuggle up with my person while watching a movie. I'm really good at cuddling up with my person at night too. I'm an active girl who likes walks, running around the yard, playing with my toys and taking car rides. I'm a big girl at 60+ pounds but I think I'm a lap dog-so beware, I might try to crawl onto your lap! I'm currently hanging out with my foster and another female dog who is smaller than me (she's an Australian Cattle dog mix). I don't know about other furry critters (like cats) and how I would be around them. We have wild rabbits where I live and I enjoy barking at them but who knows what I might do if there wasn't a fence between us! The fence is a metal fence so I can see out and it's about 4 feet tall but it might be a good idea to have a taller fence to be sure I can't jump over. I've learned to go potty outside and on my walks. It helps me to have a dog door so I can go outside when I need to and avoid accidents. I have some experience with crate training so please be patient and help me with that training. I've also been to school where I learned about the basics of sit, stay, heel, place, loose leash walking and I got to participate in group classes with other dogs of various sizes and breeds. I'm a good girl and I try really hard to do the right things but I'm still young and need positive reinforcement to help me get better at the tasks I've learned. I get very excited when my person comes home-I wag my tail side to side with such energy that my butt wiggles! My person and I live with an older person and I have to be careful not to paw at this older person or jump up on her. I do not have experience around kids so I think it would be best if my forever family has older children or no children. My favorite toys are by a brand called Tuff and I like them because they hold up to my vigorous play. I also enjoy chasing balls and toys that squeak and have some rope parts to play tug of war. Electronics are great fun to bark and bite - for example, the vacuum and the paper shredder. I'm still young and impulsive sometimes. I am a chewer so I need some positive correction on what I am allowed to chew on and what I should not chew on. Some things that help me with that issue are cow knee treats, using training treats to reward good behavior, antlers and buffalo horns and of course lots of exercise! I sometimes bark at people I know; I'm just trying to get their attention, but I will need help with correcting this behavior. Please take a chance on me! I'm a sweetheart and I'm smart and can learn to be your best companion. Darla is participating in The Love Pit's iRehome program, so ongoing care and custody are provided by their foster. All behavior and medical information is provided by their caretaker, and TLP encourages all adopters to verify the information with their caretaker prior to adoption.

Story
Hi! I'm Whisper, and not to brag or anything but I am a really smart pup. I love to be as close as I possibly can to people so I can get the maximum amount of pats and scratches possible! And if that means sitting on your head, I am perfectly willing to make that sacrifice. I LOVE LOVE LOVE going to dog parks and playing with other dogs. I really like to be with dogs that can run fast so we can play chase! Fetch is also one of my love languages. I'm kennel trained, and I'll even go hang out in my kennel on my own to just chill sometimes. I'm a master at all of the basic commands. I'm even getting a hang of "leave it and "wait during mealtime! I'be pretty much nailed potty training at this point. So long as I know my bathroom schedule I can stick to it! Though I might forget every once in a while that I just went #2 and step in it without thinking. Then I have to go in the dreaded tub of hot water. My last thing I'm still working on with my foster parents is gentle play time. I'm a rugby player at heart so I just assume everyone wants to play tackle! But if I get some of my energy out before playing others that helps a ton. All in all I just want a home where I can run and maybe play with another pup or two! I am sure I will find that some day! Whisper is participating in The Love Pit's iRehome program, so ongoing care and custody are provided by their foster. All behavior and medical information is provided by their caretaker, and TLP encourages all adopters to verify the information with their caretaker prior to adoption.
