Story
Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement—Kennel License #2617Behavior Profile Color(s): YellowYellow—May be more shy or skittish/does better in calmer environments.Could he do well with kids? Yes, with children around 12 years and older, on a kid-by-kid basis.Could he do well with other dogs? Yes, on a dog-by-dog basis.Has this dog lived with cats? Unknown. [The Lycoming County SPCA does not “cat test” dogs per the Association of Shelter Veterinarian’s Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters.]---Condensed Staff Assessment Notes: Naveen is a shy and somewhat fearful dog who tends to be anxious. After he takes a moment to observe his surroundings, he begins to relax. Initially, he tends to freeze and avoid eye contact when being handled, but he doesn’t move away from you. If you approach him slowly, he gradually becomes more comfortable and allows you to pet him anywhere on his body. As he becomes more relaxed with handling, he gets excited and starts running around.Regarding social interaction, Naveen focuses more on his environment than on humans at first. As he explores, he eventually finds humans interesting. If you give him time to investigate you, he will slowly warm up and allow you to pet him. However, if you try to reach out to him before he’s ready, he may back away, avoid eye contact, or even react defensively. No signs of resource guarding exist, but Naveen seems nervous around humans when food is involved. It’s unclear if he has been punished in the past, as he appears to be a bit hand-shy. Naveen doesn`t seem to know how to interact with people or toys, but he shows a strong interest in learning and discovering what they are, especially when coming out of the kennel. He may be reluctant and unsure about what you want from him when you reach out. However, if you give him a few seconds, he will warm up enough to allow you to attach the leash. He doesn`t seem familiar with leash or collar pressure; when he hits the end of the lead, he tends to panic a little. If he gets too close to you, he will turn off the pressure and stop trying to escape.Returning to the kennel was manageable, although he tried to flee at the last moment. During dog-to-dog introductions, he initially displayed rudeness by pulling directly toward the tester dog, but after receiving proper guidance, he played well. He greeted the first stranger cautiously and appropriately but did not consent to

[The Lycoming County SPCA does not “cat test” dogs per the Association of Shelter Veterinarian’s Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters.]---Condensed Staff Assessment Notes: Tiana is shy and very under-socialized. Initially, she tolerated handling but eventually started to enjoy it, which made her a little hyper. We didn`t observe any signs of resource guarding, but she appears nervous around humans, especially when food is involved. Although she shows some interest, Tiana does not seem to know how to play with people or toys. When we tried to engage her in play, we found that if things got too loud, she would shut down. However, she did show some interest in a squeaky toy. Everyday objects initially frightened her, and it often took a long time for her to recover. Sometimes, she needed another dog as a buddy to build her confidence and investigate the item that scared her. Her leash manners are okay, but she`s not accustomed to leash or collar pressure. While she doesn`t freak out when this happens, she tends to come back towards the handler to relieve the pressure. Her initial interactions with strangers did not go well; she was reluctant to approach them unless her handler was present. On the other hand, her interactions with the dog went very well. She approached them appropriately, which helped build her confidence. After observing this, we decided to bring strangers back into the situation to see if she would use her newfound confidence to interact with humans. To our delight, it worked! She began to seek attention from strangers, even jumping on them to initiate interaction. Based on her progress, we believe that Tiana would benefit from going into a home with another dog, which could help further build her confidence and compensate for her lack of socialization.---For more resources to help with any step of your adoption journey go to: https://go.petadoptiongateway.com/LycomingDT
