** $375 in pledges for the rescue that pulls! **
**New notes & videos 1/24 - 1/25**
PoPo ACCT-A-210317 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. PoPo must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by SUNDAY, JANUARY 26TH at 10AM. Should PoPo’s medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
PoPo is a lovable little pup with an irresistible need for affection. Picked up by police with wounds to his face on January 2nd, this sweet pup is looking for someone to help him heal and find his happy ending. PoPo greets new friends softly with mid-level wags and curious sniffs, leashing easily and walking well on leash. Despite his past, he is incredibly affectionate, leaning in for pets and showing off his “sit” for treats, which he takes gently. PoPo is calm and easygoing, preferring cuddles and companionship to toys or fast-paced play. PoPo has hindlimb neurologic deficits which may require an MRI or diagnostics if it worsens in the future. It doesn’t affect him too much right now and he is a resilient little guy who just needs a helping hand to recover and thrive. PoPo is open to meeting children over the age of 10 and has had both good and bad meets with other dogs at the shelter, so please bring any children and resident dogs along for the meet. Due to his length of stay, PoPo is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or adopter.

BEHAVIOR:
*NEW*
Per staff on 1/25:
PoPo got out for some activity time while his kennel was being worked on! He was such a pleasure to hang out with, I can't say enough good things about him! He is such a sweet little man! He was easy to leash and walk, though he does pull a bit. In the room he constantly solicited and rolled over on his back for belly rubs. He's VERY food motivated, so training him should be easy too! He climbed on the table at one point trying to find more treats, and let me pick him up without issue. He enjoyed a lick matt while we typed and waited, and just wagged his tail happily the whole time. He is such a sweet short stack!

Per volunteer 1/24: Popo is such a fun boy. he’s so cute and compact, allows all handling. He was looking cold in his kennel so I put this sweater on him and he was so happy. He’s so sweet and happy.
*NEW*
Per volunteer 1/23: I took Popo out at the end of my day since he hadn't been walked by a volunteer in 3 days! This short stack of love is so sweet and easy to leash/walk. He walked well thru the parking lot, then we go to spend a little time in the yard. Popo wasn't very interested in toys, but he graciously accepts treats! Twice he tried to climb on the bench, but his legs are too short to reach, so he needed a boost to get up - very easy to handle/no sensitivities. He was happy to follow me around the yard and get treats and pets all over. Didn't get to spend too long together since it's so cold, but he's a perfect gentleman!
Per staff 1/20: PoPo was fine for his dog meet today. We didn’t do a fence meet and he did fine walking past the female dog. When we let them sniff he was a bit pushy and push his head underneath her, so she jumped away, but he did fine overall. I think it could be more barrier reactivity than dog reactivity.
Per volunteer 1/20: Perfect lil man! Does not like the cold. He did not react to any dogs.
Per volunteer 1/20: Sweet, lapdog, doesn’t like the cold, might be H/T, pulls a little.
Per volunteer 1/19: [Dog meet was] Not too too concerning but he did seem frustrated and we kept it short. He did try to fence fight with Corvette when we were going back into iso. The green volunteer was handling him but I took over because he was hard to direct into the kennel with the distraction of Corvette right next door.
Per volunteer 1/18: So sweet! Liked playing with blue and yellow spiky ball in ISO yard and likes treats, so sweet.
Per volunteer 1/17: Love bug! Loved belly rubs and the tennis ball… was a little dog reactive with Corvette coming back.
Per volunteer 1/14: PoPo was super excited to go outside and easy enough to leash once he stopped wiggling for a second. He peed when we got out, seemingly house trained! He also loved getting all the sniffs. He took treats very gently when I offered them, but wasn’t super interested in toys or treats, more wanting to sniff around. He loved climbing in my lap for snuggles, and got himself stuck in the cutest sneeze vortexes. Overall, he was a sweet, gentle boy who loved attention and cuddles!
Per volunteer 1/12: Sweet and affectionate, loved scratches and attention, lap dog.
Per volunteer 1/11: Very sweet, no pulling on leash. Just wanted to snuggle and sniff. Pooped and peed (seems housetrained).
Per volunteer 1/4: Great on leash, walked in when there was food, took leash off with hand.
Per volunteer 1/4: Timid but curious doggo. Very lovable, sweet boy. Walks with a limp on the hind legs.
1/3 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION:
KNOWN HISTORY: Stray - police pickup, found with wounds to face
KENNEL PRESENTATION: PoPo came right up to the door when he saw me approach. He had soft eyes and mid level wags, and sniffed the leash curiously. He was easy to leash and came right out once secured.
LEASH SKILLS: Pulled minimally. Had a nice sniff with a dog in the side banks, body neutral, mid level wags, and soft eyes.
HANDLING: PoPo was very sweet and affectionate with me. He greeted me with soft eyes and non stop wags, and leaned in for head pets. He sniffed around the room curiously and then came back for more attention. PoPo took treats gently and showed me his “sit”. He was cuddly and would lean in with soft eyes for pets. He allowed all handling with no issues. He seemed to be dragging his back right leg, but it didn’t seem to be bothering him too much. Overall, PoPo is a super sweet little guy that just wants love!
PLAY: A little intimidated by the sudden movements, just wanted to hang out instead
TOYS: Got scared by squeaky toys, recoiled and walked away.
Per staff 1/2: Super sweet boy! Popo is a happy guy, who was very tolerant and well behaved for his exam. He tolerated all handling and treatments. He is also very affectionate!
MEDICAL:
As of 1/21, PoPo is pending a recheck for his URI and hind leg issues.
Per staff 1/20: PoPo was alternating which hind leg he wasn’t putting weight on and would hold each leg up for several steps. I haven’t had him out before so I’m not sure what his walking normally looks like.
On 1/16, PoPo tested negative for pneumovirus.
During his vet exam on 1/9, PoPo was “Bright, alert, responsive, very sweet. Throat, constant mild stridor/congestion, coughed during PE. Normal respiratory rate and effort, no lower airway adventitious sounds. Healing wounds on the face, scabbing over with minimal erythema, no discharge. Mild, intermittent ataxia of pelvic limbs. Delayed CP of pelvic limbs (L>R). Normal range of motion of stifles and hips without swelling, crepitus or discomfort.” The overall assessment was: URI, possibly worsened clinical signs. Mildly PL ataxia w/ CP deficits: r/o IVDD vs other neurologic etiology vs vascular vs other. He was prescribed enrofloxacin and had a monitor slip placed for his appetite.
Per staff 1/8: Was walking through kennels, and PoPo was sitting on the other side of the kennel looking dull and lip puffing.
On 1/7, PoPo was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (URI) or "doggy cold" and started on doxycycline. He tested positive for pneumovirus. During his exam, staff noted “eyes have mild periocular erythema and clear ocular discharge. Serous nasal discharge. Healing wounds on the face, scabbing over with minimal erythema, no discharge. Mildly delayed hindlimb gait, left side slightly more pronounced than right, both limbs have normal paw placement reflexes and sensation, withdrawal reflexes. No scuffing of dorsal paws, minimal scuffing of claws. Normal range of motion of stifles and hips without swelling, crepitus or discomfort.” The overall assessment was: CIRD-C with mild rhinitis and conjunctivitis. Mildly ataxic hindlimb gait, static without pain or joint abnormalities -- r/o IVDD vs. other peripheral thoracolumbar spinal abnormality.
PoPo received an exam on 1/2 due to limping and having wounds on his face. He was bright, alert, responsive, and sweet. There was mild inflammation of the periocular tissue, but no ocular or nasal discharge. Brown, waxy debris was present deep in the ear canals, but the pinnas were bright pink. His left submandibular lymph node was soft and enlarged to the size of a large grape. He was ambulatory in all four limbs but exhibited intermittent lameness in the left hind leg, dragging both hind feet slightly. No pain was elicited on neck or hind limb range of motion or spinal palpation. Proprioception was significantly decreased in both hind limbs, with the left side worse than the right. His left hind leg was barely corrected, and he would often sink into a sitting position. There were several full-thickness wounds on his muzzle and right cheek, likely bite wounds. The largest was about 1.5 cm in length on the right side. However, there was no discharge from the wounds, and they did not appear to be infected. His body condition score was 2. The overall assessment was: suspected bite wounds to face and muzzle, dehydrated, underweight, ataxia in hind limbs - neuro vs soft tissue vs ortho.
During his intake exam on 1/2, Billy’s eyes and ears were red, his ears were hot to touch, his teeth were slightly yellow, and he had some thinning fur on his hind end. He was bright, alert and responsive.
