Buda came to the shelter on January 12th as an owner surrender due to landlord issues. He is a high energy pup who is still warming up to the shelter, but gets really excited about squeaky toys! His owner said he knows several commands and was good with children and other dogs. Think Buda may be a good fit for your household? Come to the shelter with any children and resident dogs to do a meet and greet!
Eligible for rescue, foster, and adoption. Meet Buda at ACCT Philly any day of the week from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., or email foster@acctphilly.org to express interest in fostering him.
Per staff 1/14: "Got Buda out to see how he's doing! In kennel he was standing near the door, and looked up with hard eyes and lowered himself like he was going to jump at the door when he saw me approach. I stuck my leash through the door and he sniffed it with some mid level wags, loosening up right away. When I reached in with the leash he backed away when I tried to reach over his head, so I did a sideways lasso and once secured he came right out. He walked very nicely through kennels, and peed right away when we got to he eval room. He might be trying to stay housetrained! In the room he was friendly and sweet. He gave me some sniffs with soft eyes and a wagging tail, and allowed some all over pets right away. He wasn't interested in any treats or toys I offered. He did lean in for butt scratches though! He got a little fixated on smells int he room, and walked around chin chomping and drooling. When it was time to go back to kennel he walked perfectly back to the door of his kennel, but froze at his door. He looked up with hard eyes and lowered his body, but with a little encouragement he stepped into kennel without issue. It seems like Buda is a sweet boy who just doesn't like shelter life!"
Per volunteer 1/13: Buda was on his bed when I approached his kennel. He stayed on his bed while I opened his kennel door to feed several treats. Buda calmly allowed me to leash him and walked outside under full control. Buda pulled on leash as we walked. He sniffed and pulled toward more smells with little interest in me or treats. We entered the large run, and Buda continued to sniff. When I tossed a fluffy toy, Buda sniffed it for quite a while but did not pick up or play with it. Eventually, I sat on the bench, & Buda approached for treats and soft pets. He retreated when he saw people walking in the parking lot, and then returned for pets and attention. Buda took treats very nicely. He pulled with interest toward other dogs when he saw them. When returning to kennel, Buda hit the brakes and then pulled toward another dog. He eventually stepped into his kennel with my step in and treats. Buda was relaxed with leash removal & took treats nicely.
1/13 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION:
KNOWN HISTORY:
Owned
KENNEL PRESENTATION:
Buda was on his bed alert barking with pinned ears and wide eyes when the handler approached. Once he saw the leash though he stopped barking and sniffed at the leash. He came forward and allowed for the handler to leash him easily without issue and he was hesitant to exit the kennel. Needed coaxing and lots of space to exit the kennel.
LEASH SKILLS:
Pulls minimally, housebroken
HANDLING :
In the room Buda was nervous and timid . He sniffed around and explored his surroundings in the room ignoring us for the first several minutes. I then called him over to me and he approached with mid level wags and wide eyes. When I went to pet his head he dodged away from me a few times, but with a slow approach allowed me to lightly pet his head and back. He did not solicit or lean in, but was tolerant to handling when going slow and at his pace. As time went on he began to open up more and solicit hopping up on my lap in small spurts.
PLAY:
No interest
TOYS:
Perked up a lot when given squeaky toys! Easily did trades.
COLOR LEVEL & ANY RECOMMENDATIONS:
Blue
Per staff 1/12: A bit skittish but did well with check in
Per his owner surrender notes, Buda is mostly housetrained but still has some accidents, and was working on crate training. The owner said “he is very energetic but well behaved” and “he loves to play so sometimes wont listen” but does know sit, give paw, and will wait until you give a command to start eating. He’s not picky about toys or food, “he will play with anything and will eat anything”. When meeting strangers and children, he was never aggressive, but would smell them first. The owner said he loves getting pet by children. They did not know how he was with cats, but said he likes to play with other dogs. In terms of an ideal home, they want somewhere he can spend some time outside because “he is very playful and loves to run.”
Medical notes:
During his intake exam on 1/12, Buda’s eyes, nose, and ears were clean and clear, although his eyes were a bit red. He had some pressure sores on his front legs, but no other concerns. On 1/13, he received a vet exam for his sores which were superficial, suspected to be pressure sores, and did not require any treatment at the time.
