My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet poor scared Jemma, who is very confused after her home of 7 years disappeared and she found herself in this loud scary shelter! Jemma has been quite shut down since getting here but shows that she warms up with time and space. She will take some light pets once she starts getting comfortable, and we can't wait to see her true personality come out when she's in the safe environment of a loving household! Jemma was surrendered after she got into a fight with the other dog in her home, who they had added to the home. Unfortunately after this incident her owner no longer wanted to keep her and she is now looking for a new owner to come save her from the shelter!

She is now available for adoption and rescue partner at ACCT Philly- you can meet her any day from 10am-6pm!

Behavior:
Per Volunteer 1/11/25: Jemma was scared, shaking, and went to the other side of the kennel when I approached. I dropped some hotdogs and she came forward and ate them all right away but was still shaking and hesitant. I open the door and presented my leash and she sniffed it and allowed me to leash her slowly. Definitely hesitant walking through the shelter, through doorways or when she sees people or dogs walking by. She was still shaking outside, but stuck pretty close to me. Very scared body language and didn’t seem to want handling so I let her be. She’s just very shut down and shaking. Walks very nicely on leash didn’t react to another husky who was barking at her only a few feet away! Went back into her kennel easily and seemed comforted to be back there

Per Staff 1/10/25: Jemma came out for activity time today. in the room she was very shut down and tried to move away form the handler, refusing interaction, toys, treats, and play. she tolerated some light handling but her skin crawled each time. she walked around the room with a low tail and came over to the handler with about 10 minutes of us allowing her to be alone. she allowed some slow under the chin scratches and then walked away. another staff member came into the room and she approached with neutral eyes and gave some nice sniffs. she followed them to the bench and allowed some light handling.

Per Staff 1/9/25: During dog meet Jemma was unreactive, but was quite tense and unsure of the other dog. She sniffed the other dog and was tolerant of interaction but remained very stiff and uncomfortable with her body langguae keeping a high stiff tail, lip licking, and walking away often.

Per Staff 1/9/25:

KENNEL PRESENTATION:
Jemma was on her bed and looked up with semi hard eye contact. She ran to the backside. The handler was able to coax her back to the front with baby talk and she sniffed the handler and then ran away again. She stood in the middle by the divider and watched the handler with wide tense eyes and a stiff mid level tail. She came forward for a treat and then the handler lowered the divider. The handler then lassoed her with the leash and once secured she came out without issue.

LEASH SKILLS:
Pulls minimally

HANDLING :
In the room Jemma remained very tense and nervous. She stared at her handler with semi hard wide eyes but stayed close to her in the room. She was lip licking a lot and very tense with a lowered body. She walked towards me giving wide tense eyes but allowed me to lightly pet her head and back in small spurts. She would continue to give hard stares though and was very nervous and unsure. She was tolerant, but very fearful and needed a very slow approach! Hopefully she will warm up with time, but for now is very nervous.

PLAY:
