Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Meet April! 🐾💕
April is a 2-year-old, 75-76 lb Lab/Bully mix with a big heart and an even bigger love for people. She’s healthy, happy, and ready to find her forever home! Here's what we’ve learned about her so far:
A People-Person Pup:
April adores being around people and is especially fond of kids—though we haven’t seen her interact with younger children, she’s done great with older ones in her foster home. Her playful, affectionate nature makes her a big cuddle bug who loves belly rubs and being part of the action.
Dog Interactions:
April lives with other dogs and would do great as a solo dog or in a home with playful, tolerant companions. She’s particularly fond of the other younger dog in her foster home and treats her like her own puppy. April thrives in a home where playtime is fun but also balanced with calm, resting moments.
Crate & Potty Training:
Crate: April does great in her crate. While she may need a little nudge to go in, once inside, she settles in perfectly.
Potty: She’s a pro at letting you know when she needs to go outside. She’ll either look at the door or get excited when you say the word "potty."
Playtime & Walks:
April loves her toys and hasn’t destroyed a single one! She’s also a big fan of blankets and will happily nuzzle into them for cozy moments. Walks are another favorite activity—though she’s still learning leash manners, she enjoys exploring with her humans. She also knows a few commands like "sit," "up," and "down," and has an adorable habit of weaving between your legs during playtime.
Personality & Quirks:
Mouthy Play: April can get a bit mouthy when playing, but it’s always gentle and never mean-spirited.
Barking: She may bark when someone new comes into the house but settles down quickly.
Picky Eater: While April enjoys both wet and dry food, she’s a little picky with treats and prefers them straight from her bowl instead of your hand.
Ideal Home:
April would do well in an active home with older children and possibly another dog who enjoys playtime and can match her energy. She loves being the center of attention and would thrive with a family ready to give her plenty of love, structure, and opportunities for fun!
If you’re looking for a playful, cuddly companion who loves walks, belly rubs, and snuggling with blankets, April might be your perfect match. Could you be the one to give her the loving forever home she deserves? 🖤🐶

More about this rescue
We are a small 501 C3 nonprofit rescue located in Elburn, Illinois. In 2014, Safe Haven Dog Rescue became its own non-profit. We are licensed by the Illinois Agriculture Department.
The majority of our dogs and puppies are pulled from Kill Pounds and Shelters in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Illinois. We also accept local medical cases as often as our finances will allow.
Please take a few moments to read the stories about the dogs and puppies we have available for adoption. We disclose everything we know about the dogs, sometimes we know a lot often we know only that they were strays, thrown away on the side of the road, in the woods, or found in abandoned houses.
While we don’t always know their past we are certain that their future is much brighter.
We hope that you and your family are part of the future…..
