Meet Moddy, the magnificent Malinois (say that ten times fast)! She is a social butterfly who is eager to say “hi” to other people and dogs. In a brief time in a home environment, it was reported that she does well riding in the car, did not have any accidents in the home and enjoyed playing with a resident dog. We do not have any history of Moddy with cats or children. Typical to the breed, Moddy with thrive in a home that will provide above average mental and physical stimulation to set all family members (two and four legged) up for success. Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Meet Lucy, a beautiful and charismatic 1 y/o Mal mix! We rescued Lucy from a high-kill shelter in LA with less than 1 hour left before she was to be euthanized - all because she had developed an upper respiratory infection at the shelter. Lucy is a happy-go-lucky girl with a strong but gentle demeanor who LUVs and plays hard. This babe is athletic and brave but also affectionate, curious, and dignified. Lucy will need a home that can match her activity level. She thrives when she has a job - whether that's training, a game of fetch, or helping her foster dad work and run errands. She LUVs going on hikes, bike rides and skateboading with her foster dad, learning and mastering new skills, and socializing. Lucy is a frequent guest at local coffee shops where she enjoys hanging out while her foster dad works. Lucy joined our Rescue Director and her dogs after leaving the shelter. She did great with her foster fur siblings, playing and lounging around with them, and with other dogs she meets on her adventures. She loves nothing more than to be by her persons side. This babe has it going on! Her brains and beauty aid in maiking her the pawfect companion. We haven't been able to test her with kids yet so for the time being, we're recommending she goes to a home with older, calmer kids who are experienced with dogs. Meet one of our howliday LUVs, Jeff. He's a 2 y/o, 75+ lb (and still putting on weight), goofy, confident Mal mix who is need of an experienced foster or adopter. We believe Jeff was purchased from a greed/breeder and improperly “trained” to be a protection dog. When he became “too much” he was forced to live outside until he escaped or was abandoned. ⁣ ⁣ What we originally thought was a fear of men seems to be an instinctual reaction to protect and guard his person/people. Jeff LUVs the ladies (and the ladies LUV him) but requires slow and proper introductions with men. You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Gentle-hearted ShepherdCoco is a 2.5 year-old Malinois / German Shepherd mix who weighs approximately 78lbs.  Coco is just a sweet, gentle-hearted boy. Curious, goofy, loving, and energetic - he loves everyone, and sees the best in them. Coco currently lives with two older 4-legged brothers and, while he would love to live with a fur-sibling, he is not part of a bonded pair. As long as he has fur friends to play with, Coco will be a happy boy! When playing with his human pals, Coco is very verbally responsive and wants to please. He knows several commands and loves to play complex games with his toys. When he gets a bit over-stimulated, he puts himself into a timeout under his foster family's kitchen table to rest and reset! Sweet Coco has been perfectly house trained since day one, loves car rides, loves to go for walks and is learning not to pull in excitement when he meets new friends - that is Everyone! Despite his size and youth, Coco does not need long hikes to manage his energy. 15-20 minutes a couple times a day and play sessions with his fur siblings are great exercise for Coco. Coco knows the benefit of "Sit", "Down" and "Touch" to get his favorite treats, and will benefit from continued positive reinforcement training. 10/03/24 02:48Doggy Day Out Report Today I: went on my first doggie day out! I was sooooo excited and just wanted to go, go, go! I hopped in the car all by myself and explored everything I could in the back seat (I was thankful my friend put some toys in the back for me to play with). When we got to the park I was excited to stretch my legs and get some exercise, and to sniff all the new smells. Even though I was excited to walk and sniff I still made sure to check in with my friend often. I showed off my sit for lots of yummy treats and got lots of compliments on the trail about what a pretty girl I am. Three Words to Describe Me are: Active, Intelligent, Attentive Notes from My Walker: Cherina is a very energetic girl, it did take a few minutes to get her leashed up as she was very excited and wiggly. She has no problem getting in the car but make sure you don’t have anything in the back you don’t want her to get into as she will explore every inch of the car she can haha. I recommend having some toys in the back for her as she is very toy motivated and likes to have something to chew on. She was excited to get walking and she does pull but not unmanageably. Despite her excitement to be out and sniffing she checks in with her walker very frequently and is very attentive to you. She is extremely smart, she knows sit and down, and is very food/toy motivated - with consistent training she could learn many commands. When we stopped for a break she was very affectionate, wanting to snuggle up and get pets, she can get a little mouthy when petting but she is only a year old and still has some puppy mouthiness and jumpiness. Overall Cherina is an extremely intelligent and motivated dog, she needs a lot of mental and physical stimulation in her day to day life but she has the potential to be a very talented girl.

10/18/24 01:16Doggy Day Out ReportToday was so fun! My friend took me on a walk through a residential neighborhood and I loved checking everything out! There were so many things to see and smell! My friend said I walked nicely on the harness and that I was such a good girl. I showed off how pretty I can sit and how nicely I take treats. I love treats! My friend even started showing me new things like come and down. I like learning!We saw lots of dogs and I passed them politely. Squirrels are very interesting to me and I wanted to go check them out but my friend encouraged me to keep walking. I really loved my nice long walk, a break for cuddles at the park, and even a yummy bully stick on the ride home! What a great day!Three Words to Describe Me are: Adorable, Affectionate, SmartNotes from My Walker: Skylar sure is a cutie pie! She’s medium sized and estimated at a year old but has a permanent puppy face that is way too cute! We went for a long walk through Willow Glen and had a great time!Skylar walked nicely on the front clip harness and only pulled mildly towards squirrels – I agree, squirrels are fascinating! She loved to sniff and check everything out. We saw a lot of dogs and she passed them all politely. (At the shelter, she participates in doggie playgroups!) She was not reactive to anything – dogs, cars, people, strollers. She was startled a couple times at sudden movements or loud noises, but she recovered very quickly and was happy to continue on our walk.Skylar still has some puppyish manners like mouthing when I harnessed her and in the car, but she doesn’t apply any pressure. Overall, she was such a good girl and she will grow out of her mouthing in a home with regular exercise and socializing.Skylar is very food motivated and knows sit and loves to show it off for treats and she takes treats gently. She is a smart girl and was quickly understanding the commands come and down!Skylar is very affectionate and loves to crawl into your lap. We sat on the grass at a park and she was such a happy wiggly girl to get extra love. I really enjoyed my day with this adorable sweetheart! She will make someone a lovely companion.

MEET GRACE & KATIE, two beautiful,sweet & bonded black German Shepherds! Both of these lovely girls were rescued from a crowded California shelter, and they are very bonded. They have been waiting over a year for a home together. Grace & Katie are good with other dogs and lovely with people. Grace, the mama dog, is about 5-6 years old, and Katie is a 2-year-old girl now and growing up! Both girls have also done fairly well around cats but would need to be monitored. Katie weighs about 60-65 lbs, and Grace weighs about 71-75 lbs. They've waited a long time for a home because we are trying to place them together, so if you can open your home to two dogs, please email for an application. They also need a foster! We also offer discounted adoption fees for pairs.

Meet Prince, a handsome, jet black, herding-type dog. This shy guy is growing more comfortable in the Shelter environment by the day and in turn making new friends (both human and canine). Staff have observed that Prince brightens up and really shows his adolescent, playful self when around other dogs. He is a regular in the dog-enrichment program `walking buddies` where Shelter dogs go on walking adventures with other canines to learn how to interact with other dogs out in the world. Due to the positive effect other dogs have on Prince – a home with another dog is highly recommended for Prince. Once he is relaxed and comfortable, Prince has melts into people when petting. Prince has a lot of “yeses” for his next home including walks, play and treats but there is one “no” and that is cats. Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! He was rescued from an overcrowded California shelter, where he was kenneled with another dog and did great. He especially seems to like females, and did well on a few meet-ups.
