Story
COME AND MEET LILO, who is a beautiful, fun, and feisty, a just over 6 year old cat with special needs. Sleek and black with big, round, amber eyes, Lilo suffered an unknown trauma as a kitten that required her tail to be amputated. She was left incontinent (unable to urinate on own) but otherwise unfazed. Playful, inquisitive, and super-affectionate, she loves attention from people and, after a proper introduction, is happy to make friends with other cats. She loves to purr, give you head-butts, knead soft things, and receive lots of body rubs. Lilo also loves to be up high on cat tees and shelves, and one of her favorite things is hop down onto your back for a bit of fun and snuggles! It is necessary to express Lilo's bladder at least two times a day, more frequently if possible, and she doesn't seem to mind. Her forever home will need to have the time and patience to clean up occasional urine leaks. Despite these minor leaks, she never smells like urine--being a fastidious groomer, she keeps herself spotlessly clean. While Lilo uses the litter box normally, due to sphincter weakness, she sometimes leaves "presents" outside of it. As long as her diet is consistent, these are very easy to pick up with just a tissue. It would be preferable if her space in her new home did not have carpet. Prospective adopters experienced with the type of specialized care Lilo would be ideal, but we can also do training sessions and provide pro tips for establishing her care routine at home.Lilo is a wonderful little girl that will bring you much joy & happiness!Go to our website, www.hartofme.org, to submit your online application today!***FKA = Formerly Known As

Story
PK is an adorable 7-year-old, white and black, short-haired cat who was found more than 4 years ago in a feral cat colony and trapped by one of our partner animal rescue organizations here in Maine. She transferred to HART and moved into one of our experienced foster homes so she could decompress and get used to being around people. As it turned out, this took quite a while, because PK proved to be a rather independent and strong-willed kitty who could be rather aggressive when she feels unsure or threatened. Her foster home just adored her but eventually knew that she needed to have more visibility to potential adopters, so after seeing great forward progress and success, PK came into the shelter. She is blossoming even more at HART. She adores laying in the sun, likes to play and loves attention. PK has befriended many volunteers who she enjoys spending quality time with, and they in turn love her! Before she came to the shelter, her foster family patiently worked with her to earn her trust and improve her confidence and people-skills. Patience, consistent routine, and smart use of food motivation allowed PK to make great progress, and she has become quite comfortable with humans. She is very accepting of pets, scritches, and the occasional gentle belly rub. She would sometimes even sleep on a pillow next to her foster mom at night. The biggest change in her is that she now purrs! When she is feeling really happy, she will chirp and chatter in such a cute way. PK is also very playful, and she simply loves interactive playtime--you should see how she picks up toys and walks around with them! Of course, PK still does have her limits, but the good news is that she gives clear cues when she's at or near her threshold so you know to back off and can avoid getting swatted. While she was in foster care, we discovered that PK has a renal (kidney) condition that requires 2 medications and regular monitoring. She takes her medications like a champ and eats a prescription dry food and Fancy Feast canned food. For more information about PK’s condition and her specific health needs, please contact our Medical Manager, Bobbi-Jo, directly via email at b.dobbs@hartofme.org. She will need a calm home with a patient, cat-savvy person or couple who will give her time to acclimate to her new environment and continue to work with her on socialization while also allowing her to be herself. PK should not be in a home where children live or visit, and she would probably do best as the only animal in the household. If you would like to meet this wonderful cat, please complete an online adoption application, specifying PK, and a member of our Adoption Team will reach out to you to schedule a time for a meet-and-greet.Go to our website, www.hartofme.org, to submit your online application today!***FKA = Formerly Known As

Bonded with Snickers and OleanderWhat a beautiful cat to look at! And that is truly what she likes best, to be admired from a distance. Maggie is shyand very cautious around people. She is not aggressive, but if she feels frightened, she will run away. Maggiegets along well with the other cats in her room and has developed a deep bond with Snickers and Oleander. Often you will find the three of them curled up in a small cat bed taking a nap together. Maggie has been on the Shy Angel Program for several years and even though she is still on the shy side she has made tremendous progressand has a much more relaxed attitude when people enter her room. For playtime, Maggie enjoys playing with thelaser pointer. She would do best with an experienced cat owner who is not in need of a cuddle bug cat. If you are interested in meeting Maggie and her friends, please submit an adoption application, and our Adoption Team will schedule a time for you to visit and to speak with our Shy Angels Program Coordinator who will alsowork with you on how the program works and discuss plans on how to continue the program once the kitties gohome.Go to our website, www.hartofme.org, to submit your online application today!***FKA = Formerly Known As

Story
Snickers is a handsome senior Tuxedo cat in our Shy Angels Room 5. He is reserved around people, is great at holding eye contact and enjoys being told what a good boy he is. Snickers is a sweet kitty, not at all aggressive but shy. He needs to find a quiet home with one or two of his feline friends from HART - he is very close and bonded especially to Maggie. He loves to play, and this would be a good way for a patient adopter to slowly draw he and his friends out so that they are comfortable in your home. Please meet our special guy Snickers and his friends. Our Socialization Team would want to meet with you to talk about our handsome Snickers and his needs.Go to our website, www.hartofme.org, to submit your online application today!***FKA = Formerly Known As

Story
Bonded with Maggie and SnickersOleander is a beautiful, senior kitty whose bright white fur, darling face, and polydactyl front paws really make her stand out from the crowd. Oleander came to HART as a very under-socialized feline nearly 8 years ago from another rescue group in Maine. One of the cats in our Shy Angels Program, our patient volunteers have worked hard to gain her trust, but Oleander has proven to be a tough nut to crack, and to this day she would prefer that humans keep their distance. Despite her strict personal-space requirements, Oleander has learned to be comfortable with people working in her room, and, around volunteers she knows well, she will reveal the playful side of her personality. It's so great to watch her enjoy eating a few treats and playing with interactive toys! She gets along with her feline roommates, and she has formed close bonds with Snickers and Maggie who are also long time residents at HART. We would love to see the 3 of them go home together, if you have the space for 3 adult cats. Oleander, Maggie, and Snickers are extremely shy kitties, they are often overlooked by potential adopters, and we know they will need a very particular home environment. However, we also believe their special someone is out there, and we would love for them to be adopted into a loving home of their very own, with patient humans and other non-confrontational feline friends. Oleander has chronic runny eyes, and recent medical work-ups have indicated that she has renal disease. If you are interested in meeting Oleander, please submit an adoption application, and our Adoption Team will schedule a time for you to visit with her and speak with Our Shy Angels Program Coordinator who will also work with you on how the program works and discuss plans on how to continue the program once the kitties go home.Go to our website, www.hartofme.org, to submit your online application today!***FKA = Formerly Known As
