Sven’s story is one of resilience, love, and second chances. Rescued from the shelter by a dedicated volunteer from Rocky Mountain Great Dane Rescue, he’s spent time adjusting to life outside a kennel. Now, in his foster home, Sven is revealing his true personality—one that is affectionate, gentle, and irresistibly lovable. Sven isn’t just a companion; he’s a shadow, always by your side, leaning into you with all his weight just to feel close. If you stop petting him, he’ll gently nudge your arm or place a paw on you as a reminder that he thrives on affection. Despite his large size, he believes he’s a lap dog—he won’t climb onto furniture, but he will happily sit his rear end on your lap, requesting endless pets. Quiet and well-mannered, Sven rarely barks. When he does, it’s only a couple of deep, measured woofs. He’s friendly with family and visitors alike, making him a wonderful companion in a welcoming home. Sven is fully housetrained and knows basic commands such as sit, down, come, stay, and off—he even understands hand signals! While he listens well indoors, leash training is still a work in progress. He gets excited before walks, wiggling with happiness and making harnessing a challenge. On a leash, he pulls, especially if he spots something interesting like a rabbit. However, with guidance, he responds well to commands and is eager to please. At the shelter, Sven showed some fence-line aggression toward other dogs, but in controlled settings, he has done well with submissive canine companions. On walks, he’s curious about other dogs rather than aggressive. However, if a dog surprises him, he may react with a bark or snarl but calms down quickly. He would probably do best as the only dog in the home but it’s possible he could get along with a submissive canine friend with slow and careful introductions. Sven’s ideal home would be one where he gets plenty of attention—he craves companionship and would do best with someone who can spend time doting on him. A fenced yard where he can lounge outside is a must, as he loves to soak in his surroundings. ☀️ Given his size and enthusiasm, he may unintentionally knock over small children when seeking affection, so a family with older kids or dog-savvy little ones would be best.
