Story
Hello all! I’m Helen, known by all my best friends as Helly; and although that may be an odd nickname, it bears no relevance to my heavenly looks and personality.
Just a little bit more about me in case you are interested in making me a member of your family. I began my Weimaraner Rescue of Texas (WRT) journey in the small, south TX town of Woodsboro. I was a stray that was trapped by my foster family who had mistaken me for a German Shorthair Pointer – but I don’t hold that against them! I was very thin and absolutely frightened, having been left to fend for myself for over a month. Since staying with my foster family and being accepted into the WRT, my gorgeous blue Weimaraner coat is coming through, and I’ve gained weight, weighing in now at approximately 60 pounds. I am heartworm negative, have had all my core vaccinations and I’m scheduled to be spayed in a few short weeks.
When I was trapped by my foster family, I was SO SCARED and starving. My foster family started right away, getting me into a routine and building my confidence and trust in people. I was introduced to the very LARGE family we have here on the farm. I get along with EVERYONE and let me tell you, there are a lot of us – BIG dogs (4 GSP’s and another PRO foster pointer), LITTLE dogs (3 Pomeranians), a HERD of goats, a CLOWDER of cats, horses and then there are neighbor cows that live on the properties that surround us. I am quite curious about the cats, but I am not aggressive, and I keep my distance from those snarly beasts!
I love running around the yard with the other big dogs; I also dabble in the shallow end of the pool. Me and the other dogs have a fun time running around, acting like a bunch of crazies, but I’ve learned that people are good too and nice to hang around with, so I would also do fine as an only dog. I do very well in the house; my energy level is low to medium which also makes me a good candidate for a family where leash walks, doggy daycare, and dogs parks are my primary forms of exercise. When we are all home, I just find a comfortable place to hang out, sometimes in the middle of everything and then, sometimes in a quiet, peaceful area of the house like a crate. At night, I sleep on my dog bed in the mud room where I’m very quiet and content; this is also where I’m able to stay without any issues while my foster parents are at work – I am trustworthy enough to stay out alone in the house, but with such a BIG DOG family, we all have to have our own space. I’m kid and stranger friendly; the elementary school aged neighbor has been over to play and hang out with me, without any concern at all. I’ve not been exposed to smaller children, but my foster Mom has confidence that I would be good with children. I also travel well and have impeccable manners in public settings.
We do a lot of training here at my foster home. I know how to sit; I heel fabulously on leash; I will go into a crate when asked; and I have a good recall. I’m learning to shake paws, but I sometimes want to give both at the same time!
I do show some interest in birds, however my foster family hasn’t tested that out yet – so stay tuned.
Our priority continues to be building trust and confidence in people. In any case I can’t wait to find my forever home and be an important part of my very own family!
A note from my foster mom: Helen was clearly someone’s dog who mostly treated her well. She is very smart and extremely willing to learn. She has a very relaxed demeanor, quite different from our nonstop GSPs. There’s almost no home that Helen wouldn’t be perfect for, but she would do best with a fenced yard or someone who leads an active lifestyle – walking, hiking, running, bike riding. One important thing to know about Helen is she does submissively smile. For those unfamiliar with the behavior, it can be very intimidating. As she becomes more confident, she does this less and less, but it is a part of her personality – one we have come to embrace. Helen is a wonderful dog, who has come SUCH A LONG way, but the best chapters of her story will be written by her forever family and are yet to come.
