Story
Meet Cheeto! One of our dedicated foster moms, Jen, saw Cheeto being given away on social media and offered to foster him. We were delighted to welcome this adorable 1-year-old Yorkie/Shih Tzu Mix (Shorkie) into our rescue. Cheeto is an incredibly sweet pup with a youthful energy. He gets along well with other dogs and loves to play. Cheeto was fostered in South Carolina by Jen, living with her three older dogs and multiple cats. Initially, he was somewhat barky with the other dogs as he had never lived with canine companions before. He needed to learn appropriate play communication, but he picked it up quickly and is now a great pack member. He would pair well with a playful dog that matches his energy, or he'd thrive as an only dog with an active family who engages him in walks and play. He showed too much interest and was barky at the cats, so he is not a natural with kitties This sweet boy's primary focus is on his people. He wants to be near them and is always aware of where they are. He's an active boy, but loves his toys and can entertain himself. He responds well to routine, has learned to take naps, and does well with crate training. He's comfortable in the car and always ready for adventure. In the home, Cheeto takes a little time to warm up to strangers and may initially bark, but settles down once comfortable. He settles down more quickly if ignored (no talk, touch, or eye contact). He likely hasn't had many interactions with new people or experiences, but as a young dog, he'll continue to develop with more exposure. Cheeto came to the DC metro area and is currently being fostered by Humera and her sidekick Terrier, Ava. He's quickly acclimated to his new routine and is very respectful of Ava. He is always up for playtime but respects when she's not up for it and will entertain himself with toys...He loves to chew bones and squeaky toys and excels at fetch, reliably returning items. He follows her lead and is confident but also submissive. Foster mom, Humera, checked in with an update: "Cheeto is mostly housetrained but needs regular breaks. He is crate-trained and sleeps soundly through the night in a crate next to my bed. Being young, he'll find things to chew if unsupervised, but he's easily redirected with toys and bones. Cheeto is medium energy. He has spikes of adolescent energy and playfulness but is also able to chill while I'm working. I think he could be solo or with a buddy and be just fine either way. He's already learned not to bark at Ava because it doesn't get her to play, so he'll just go entertain himself. He is very food-motivated so training him should be easy and he does want to make you happy by listening. He isn’t a rebel He’s really cuddly too he was on my lap earlier and giving kisses." ********* This adorable pup will bring joy and love to your home. He needs an active family who is ready to show him the ropes while continuing his training. Apply today!
