Story
Derek is an independent dog who is crate, fenced, and house trained, who loves walks and just being around people. Derek is fun and playful and doesn't mind just lounging around. He is friendly towards adults and older children but has a hard time around small children and should not be in the home with them. Derek is currently living with another dog but has shown aggression towards other dogs so would be best in a one dog household. He has not lived with cats but has a prey mindset so ideally wouldn't live with them either. Derek's ideal home is an adult only home - perfect for an older couple who wants a happy companion.

Story
Bow Wow is a 2 - 3 yr old male Akita mix. He has a high energy level, so he would benefit from an active family with a fenced yard and plenty of space for daily exercise and play. He is loose and wiggly when greeting, and comes when called for snuggles and kisses. Bow Wow walks well on a leash with no pulling. He is food motivated and knows the command sit. He mixes well with other dogs in a kennel, but is intensely interested in cats in the shelter environment. Dogs are generally tested with dogs of their own size; and dog meets with the resident dogs are always encouraged. Our cat test should be used as a general-purpose screening only to rule out overt aggression; we always recommend caution when introducing dogs to cats in the home. Recommendation on suitability of placement with children by their ages is based on behavioral observations including energy level and response to body handling. We never recommend leaving young children unsupervised with dogs, and we cannot guarantee the behavior of dogs with children, other pets, or cats. Behavior evaluations should be considered as a snapshot of the behavior of the dog at this point in time; JHS believes all dog families need to be prepared to invest time and energy into training as well as provide common sense management of their new dog. We always encourage family to do some research on the breeds or mixes of breeds prior to adoption as many can have some unique characteristics that may or may not fit into their families. Always remember that the majority of dogs at our shelter have been exposed to or may have kennel cough. Kennel cough is contagious to other dogs, please talk to your vet if you have any questions about kennel cough prior to adoption. Please ask your adoption counselor at time of adoption if you have any unanswered questions regarding illnesses and treatments of the pet that you are adopting. For more information about this dog or any others at our Shelter, please visit www.joplinhumane.org. We are the Joplin Humane Society in Joplin, Missouri. 417-623-3642.

Story
Howard is a senior boy at 9 years old who found himself at the shelter after running loose on the streets after his owner passed away. Due to his age and size, he developed extremely bad arthritis, making it hard for him to get around. For this reason he needs a home with little to no stairs. He's currently living comfortably in a foster home where we are learning more about him. More info will be added as we get to know him better! Consider opening your home as a foster to help us learn more about our pups!
