Story
Akai camd from a shelter in NC.  Here is what the shelter said about her: 'This beautiful girl is Akaie. She has been fostered out twice to potential adopters from our shelter but returned both times, as neither potential adopter was familiar with the breed and she was “too much” for them. There was no mention of aggression or anything dealing with behavior, just that she was too strong for one’s wife to walk while he is at work and then the second foster read information on the breed and decided she was not a match for her. We would love to find an Akita Rescue that could pull her from our facility and find the right family for her. ' The shelter workers adored her. Here is what we know about her from her time with us.  She is great with people.  Very particular about what dogs she likes.  Has a fairly high prey drive, so no small dogs or cats. She is at our kennel.  As with all Akitas, she does not like to potty in her run.  Update: Akai has been in a foster home for about 3 weeks. She’s been to the groomers and the vet, no issues with anyone there. She will sit, down and dance when you ask to. She mostly walks well with minor corrections.  She is housebroken and the foster says she is a gem. She has been to the foster’s place of business (store), and has been okay with most of the customers.  She is not crazy about men in baseball caps. A contractor waring a hat met her and when he held out his hand for her to sniff, she growled.  Once he removed his hat, she was fine. One man walked into the store and she disliked him so much she had to be out of the store.Sh barked intensely at him.  Akai needs a home with some Akita experience. Story
Mama Kiki and her 2 week old puppies luckily landed in the shelter as strays.  The shelter contacted rescue, we were lucky to find a temporary foster and then regular foster home for them.  She will be available once her puppies are weaned and she is spayed.  Both foster homes say she is very sweet and food oriented.  She was bone thin when she came to us, probably having been in poor shape before her pregnancy.  Watch her blossom once she is no longer feeding her pups. The oicture of her wwith the white Akita is her meeting and interacting with him, the resident dog at the foster home.See more pix and  video of mom and her pups at https://www.facebook.com/akitarescue.org/  Ashoka and Omega have applications on them.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.August 12, 2024, 5:22 pm

Story
Meet Polar Bear (PB)!  PB and her siblings were born at a rural shelter in SC after their mom, Bisky, was found roaming as a stray. The shelter is not a safe environment for puppies who are so vulnerable and don’t have mature immune systems or vaccinations to protect them. Thankfully, one of our volunteers became aware of the situation and offered to foster the family and get them to a safer environment. Bisky and her puppies were taken into a foster home when they were only a week old and had a very secure, nurturing home life with their mom and siblings. They spent their first formative weeks in a home with a foster mom and dad, another adult dog, and two kitties. They’ve had exposure to toddlers and multiple visits to the vet office to meet their many friends. Their foster mom worked at a local vet practice, so they have been given great care and had a lot of social engagement at this young age.   ADOPTION UPDATE - 7/8/24 Polar Bear arrived over the weekend and is being fostered in Arlington, VA by Beth, Joe, and their WDR alum pup, Harper. We checked in with Beth for an update to see how Polar Bear is settling in… “Polar Bear (PB) is so sweet. She loves to play and explore. She is also content to snuggle up and nap while I’m working or sit on the couch and cuddle while we watch TV. She has a nice, moderate energy level and is also extremely intelligent. She learned how to climb the stairs by watching Harper and comes EVERY time she is called. We gave her a peanut butter treat a few times when she went in the crate and now she runs up and into the crate every time we go upstairs. She’s food-motivated and is going to be an easy dog to train. PB follows Harper! She runs after her in the yard and copies her. She is puppy-curious and loves to explore the house and the yard. She’s still a little hesitant to play with Harper because Harper is much larger and plays rough. But Harper has been modulating and they have started to play together.  We've gone on a few outings and PB does great in the car too! She has been doing well with potty training and has settled into our routine quickly.  We take her out every two hours and she goes to the bathroom reliably. It has prevented accidents. She slept through the night last night without needing to go out (!!!) and will run to her crate after I give her a few treats. She’s new to leash walking and we started working on her leash skills yesterday. I suspect she will pick it up quickly. She’s a very sweet, laid-back puppy.” ********** Polar Bear is a cuddly, playful good-natured puppy ready to start her new life. She is such a pretty, elegant pup, and has a striking cream-colored coat like her mom, Bisky. She loves meeting new people and other dogs and is good with cats and kids too.  We are looking for a fun, active family that has a flexible schedule and is ready for puppy mode. A family with another social, playful pup in the home would be great for PB, but it’s not required. We expect PB to be an active, medium-sized dog like her mom (45 to 50 lbs) when fully grown. Like all puppies, she will need an owner committed to her basic training.  Preference will be given to adopters with: Flexible, puppy-friendly schedule Another social dog in the home (preferred but not required) An active home in the DC metro and surrounding area Polar Bear is still too young to be spayed, but having her spayed at the appropriate age will be required as part of her adoption terms. We will require that proof of spay is provided to the rescue. Apply today! BREED ESTIMATE: Husky Mix GENDER: Female APPROXIMATE WEIGHT: ~  25 lbs (expected to be 40lbs at full size) APPROXIMATE AGE:  ~  5 months old COAT TYPE:  short ADOPTION FEE: $400 OTHER INFO: utd on shots/microchipped FOSTER LOCATION: Arlington, VA   FOR MORE INFO OR TO ADOPT: Please go to https://adopt.worthydog.org and complete the application. You can also help save dogs like this one by becoming a foster, providing a rescue dog with a temporary home and giving them the love and care they need until they are permanently adopted. Every person who fosters is directly responsible for saving the life of a dog, because we can only save as many dogs as we have foster families available to welcome them into their homes. If you think you might be interested in becoming a foster and want to learn more, please go to https://foster.worthydog.org and fill out an application.
