Story
I am a graduate of the FREEDOM TAILS Board & Train Program in partnership with Stafford Creek Corrections Center. This popular program pairs a duo of incarcerated individuals up with a PAWS of Grays Harbor pooch for 12 weeks. Each dog has a primary and secondary handler assigned to the same cell, giving the dog 24-hour care and attention to meet its needs. During their stay at SCCC, these dogs receive specialized training to prepare them for adoption to the public. At the end of their 12-week stay, they enjoy a special adoption ceremony with their new families to show off their skills as they start a new journey. Find out more at pawsgh.org/freedomtails.5 Quick Highlights: 1. He is very cute and affectionate2. He’s smart and listens well3. He’s a fast learned and is already house broken4. He’s fun, funny, and very energetic5. He’s a great dog and loves to play with other dogsHi!!! I'm Smiley, and I have A LOT to smile about! I am a parvo survivor thanks to my friends at PAWS. I have so much love to give, I wasn't ready to stop fighting for my future! My friends say I don't have a mean bone in my body, but I didn't know bones could be mean, I just think they're tasty! I have had some training, too. Do you want to be my people? I love new friends and am ready to see what all life has in store for my future!! Let's go!----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------4/12/24Hello there, free world. My name is Smiley! I’m currently in the Big House taking a huge bite of crime. Yeah, I know that was a really corny joke but dry humor is my middle name. I think that might make me a Capricorn, I don’t know. Nevermind, I’m getting off topic again because I’m so busy! Anyways, I’m here in the Freedom Tails training program learning how to live more comfortably and obediently with humans. Humans can be strange creatures sometimes but that's another off topic subject that we’ll talk about later. My first night in prison was ruff, ruff ruff but my human companions in here quickly helped me settle in and get adjusted to my new environment. They laid a few ground rules and said it’ll help me to get adopted. The first thing I learned was that not everything on the floor is a toy I can play with. Next I learned that windows and doors aren’t something for me to spy on and bark or goals at the world through. There is so much more to tell you about my Freedom Tails prison experience, so stay tuned until next week when I’ll let you know how I made it through bathtime! Signing off with licks, smiles and nibbles until next time! Lick, Lick, Ruff!---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------4/19/24Hi guys! It’s your favorite little Blue nose prison mix! You’ll be pleased to know I made it through my first bath time here just fine. The service in this slop hole sucks. There were no bubbles for the bath, no big fluffy robes to relax in after and, you guessed it, no rubber duckys. :( There is a Ducky in here but she’s not yellow or made of rubber. She’s a poof ball with two different colored eyes. That’s a little weird and creepy if you ask me. I hear some people find that cute and adorable. If you find out who they are please let me know so I can block them! Other than that, the last few weeks have been pretty boring. I mean who likes being told what they can’t do all week? It’s not a bad thing to learn the rules and boundaries of living with my companions. I’m hoping it’ll find me a home. Signing off again with licks, smiles and nibbles! Until next time, LICK, LICK, RUFF! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------7/9/24 Well hello again! The good vibes and smiles are back! You’d better act fast if you would like a shot at a future with me. Let's face it folks, I'm too cute and cuddly to last long on this site. I like long walks, hops, chasing balls, playing with other pups, snuggling up with a good friend and taking in a movie - no chick flicks. I prefer to let the chicks chase me and save my energy for chasing balls and playing with the other pups in the yard. I have to warn you though, I do not like cats. I tried to live with one for a week and let’s just say I wanted to play but it did not. Apparently cats don’t like to be chased? Weird creatures. I do however LOVE LOVE LOVE puppies! If you have a puppy or two, we’ll get along just fine. I also like boundaries, they help me feel safe and secure enough to let my guard down and relax. If you like anything mentioned above, I’m your perfect dog. RUFF RUFF Smiley --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------7/10/24 I’m settling back in pretty well here although my trainer said I need to go on a diet. Apparently my brief stint in the free world has taken a toll on my figure. It has earned me a new nickname he’d like me to shed fast - “Fat Boy.” I've been a little tired and depressed because things didn’t work out with my previous adopters. They were swell folks. They treated me well and were as broken up as I was to see me go. I’m holding on to the belief, “everything happens for a reason.” That said, it stands to reason that I haven't found the family I’m meant to be with, YET! But I will, and we are going to have lots and lots of fun. Hopefully by now you’ll know I tend to overeat so you'll need to help me stay at a healthy weight. Hum, speaking of food…. Too bad I can't drown my depression in a few submarine sandwiches and iced lattes. You humans have it so good when it comes to emotional issues… or do you??? Don’t worry, I’m not too depressed as I have lots of old friends here to keep me company. But I’m hoping to find some forever friends soon. RUFF RUFF Smiley --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------7/18/24 Hello again, I went to a meet and greet the other day. It was loads of fun to visit the outside world again. I’m hoping I’ll find my forever home soon. I’m a warm and very energetic dog who loves to run and play in the yard with the dogs. Speaking of playmates, I’ve made a new friend with another graduate from last class. His name is River. He’s a very cool and fun Rottie mix. We had a real blast this morning. I wouldn’t mind having a playmate like him for life. I get it though, one dog is a handful, namely me! But a boy can dream, can’t he? I’m only a handful until you set up the boundaries. As long as you and the boundaries stay consistent, I’ll feel safe enough to relax and be my bestest self. But don’t forget, I’m also excitable so you’ll need to either let me get it out or disengage to get me to adopt. Just tell me to go to my place and lay down and I'll know you're not in the mood to play! I’ll take a nap until you are. I’m the bestest boy with just a hint of guidance. RUFF RUFF Smiley!--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Hello, world! It’s your favorite cute, funny, and energetic four legged friend, Smizzel. Things are heating up here since I arrived. I am not talking about the weather, but the 5 or 6 other dos that have arrived. This means lots more smells and feces. My neighbor is a cute 9 month old pitty pup named Cammie. She’s really sweet and nice. Then, there is Dalwood, a fiesty little pug mix. For a small dog, he thinks he’s in charge…of what I don’t know. Anyhow, there are plenty of nice K9’s to pick from in this class. Fun facts about me, I love kisses, hugs, and belly rubs. I love to play with soccer and basketballs, but watch your fingers accidents happen. My trainer is working on what he calls impulse control which should solve the finger problem for good. Apparently my trainer has been dubbed finger in the mouth guy because of me. He is a good trainer, though, and takes it like a champ. The nickname that is, not the nicks. Until Next Time,Smiley woof woof8/15/2024Well, well now good folks out there I do not know what’s taking you so long to decide what’s cuter than a kitten? Let me help you out…..I am silly!!!! Now stop wasting your time and money on kitty litter and come and get me, already!!!! Sure I am a little work up front but it is all laughs and giggles once I settle into your life and home. I love snacks, naps, movies, and playing with new dogs at the park. Speaking of new dogs, 14 new ones showed up herald now me and my good playmate River are sticking out like sore thumbs. River and I get along great. We love our AM play dates and pack walks. All in all life isn’t bad here but it is not what it could be if you would take a chance on a dog like me!!! It would be the best decision of your life. I can’t wait to meet you. Until then…..Ruff Ruff,Smiley----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------8/25/24This week has been quite fun. I’ve been learning to sit, down, and wait until I am called or released to eat or move around. This is mainly when my handler is cleaning up his cell or preparing a meal or feeding me. Also, if someone comes to the door I’m instructed to go to place, down, and wait. If I’m really good my handler will tell me to go and see and I get a pet from whoever is there. Other than that he has been working with me on my impulse control. I especially need this when I am around basketballs or soccer balls, they are my favorite toy. I take lots of naps snd I am completely house broken. I am also good at hearing things outside that get too close to the house. I let my handler know this with a low growl or bark to scare them off. Hope I didn’t scare my person’s date away. Oops. Sorry about that! Smiley__________________________________________________________________________9/17/24Hey people, what’s taking you so long to decide about taking a pup as cute and adorable as me home with you?? I’m everything you have been dreaming about in a dog, and then some! I’m house broken - I won’t use the bathroom indoors unless you ignore my many MANY requests to be let out! I’m really obedient once the ground rules have been laid and thoroughly tested by yours truly. I know all my cues. I love to play around and make people laugh. I’m loads of fun for your family and great entertainment for your neighbors and friends. I know you’ve probably made many mistakes in your life, but I won’t be one of them! I’ll be your greatest decision. Come on, what’s there to think about? Look at me! I’m funny, cute and I LOVE to cuddle. I’ll bring warmth to your life and feet on a cold winter’s night . Stop second guessing yourself already and bring me home! 🙂 Ruff Ruff! Smiley_____________________________________________________________________Smiley 9/19/24Still waiting to find my forever home. I’m a good and well behaved dog. I’m not boring though. I like to have lots of fun. I’m really cute and funny, too. I can’t wait to meet you, whoever is meant to be my forever person. Until then I’ll continue to be me and learn all I can to be the best dog. Hopefully, I will have lots of fun, make my handlers laugh, and enjoy my time with them while I wait for just the right person. Ruff Ruff,Smiley_________________________________________________________________________Smiley 10/10/24Hey, I’m cute!! I love to play and make people laugh. I have the best smile! I like long walks and late night treats. I also like to watch TV. Pit bulls and parolees is my favorite. If you believe that last bit, I have some ocean front property in Arizona you might like to buy. I told you I was funny. HeeHee 😀 Anyways, Prison Is Boring. So, put up my $400 bail and let’s get our lives started together! I know you’re going to love it.:) Ruff Ruff Smiley__________________________________________________________________________Claud, Smiley's Handler 10/17/24Working with Smiley taught me I am capable of far more than I thought. I think I was taken beyond my breaking point on night one. This night forced me to face and accept a few personal issues just below the surface of consciousness. Working through them has made me more confident and sure of myself and my ability to face and transcend personal and professional difficulties. During the course of training, I was able to correlate some mistakes I had made into the method of training I chose. Addressing my difficulties has made me a far better and more experienced trainer and human being. Working with this dog, Smiley, taught me people and animals both have the right to make decisions. Smiley allowed me to make adjustments; personally and professionally. This has made it possible to accept myself while also respecting the rights and opinions of others. I feel honored and privileged to have been given the opportunity to work with dogs and other individuals in the Freedom Tails program. I look forward to learning and growing more personally and professionally in the near future. Thanks to everyone that made this possible.Smiley 10/10/24Hey, I’m cute!! So, put up my $400 bail and let’s get our lives started together! I know you’re going to love it.:) Smiley 12/7/24Smiley is a highly intelligent curious dog that will perform his cues on call, but at times he is distracted by his high intensity for excitement. Smiley is food driven and will always seek a treat. He will case and put his full attention on any cat, rabbit, or small animal. Smiley will be aggressive with other dogs, but once he is introduced to the other dogs properly, his aggression is only playful, very playful and “ruff”. Smiley is like any other dog that NAPS all day or when he can, eats without chewing-swallowing, inhaling his food if he can. This dog is way too playful when he has built-up energy. What Smiley likes:Being rubbed, brushed while chewing a chew toyTug ropePlaying fetch but will destroy football/volleyballRetrieves his leash “Bring it”SpinsRollsFood-any treatGrins when he wakes up, stretches, and gets attention( eye contact). 12/18/24Smiley is a short haired mostly gray with a little white pitbull terrier. He’s 2 yrs old but a mere teenager in dog years. He has brown eyes with a right pupil that’s always a little bit bigger than the left. Smiley has a morning grin/smile that to the untrained eye might be construed as intimidating. In reality, he’s just showing you his happy face! He’s letting you know he’s happy to see you and so excited for the day! He weighs in at 56 lbs of happy, tail wagging cuteness. He’s 2 feet tall, very intelligent, hard headed and too friendly for his own good. He’s never bitten anyone but can get nervous and anxious at times. He plays hard and can be a bit much when left to his own devices with another canine. All you have to do is tell him to “play gentle” and he’ll calm down. Smiley is a very playful dog that will do just about anything for food. He’s a loveable happy dog with a curious personality in search of a good home. 12/25/24 Smile already knows - SitLay down StandStayWaitComeUpOffDownJumoSpeakSpinRollCrateKennelPlaceShake paws Listen/focus Jump (through hoops or over an obstacle) FetchLoose leash walking Follow me Go see/ Go We’re currently working on getting the little guy to army crawl into a barrel roll! Oh! And he’s potty trained. He will either walk around in circles, touch the door with two paws or touch his nose to your belly to signal it’s time to go. 01/01/25I am a pitbull terrier named Smiley who ended up at PAWS at a very young age. I was originally found wandering the streets of Hoquiam all alone… Some guy in a uniform caught me and well, now I’m here! Now I’m surrounded by people who love and care for me. I've learned a lot of new things too! I just figured out I can get food everytime I respond to my handlers commands. I think they know I’ll do just about anything for a tasty treat. I love chicken…. Don’t get me wrong, as well trained as I am, I’m still a hard head… But like I said before, I will do almost anything for a treat! Even when new things get introduced to my world that I might not be too keen on, my handler has figured out that treats make everything better for me! My loose leash walking is getting better too! I just get too excited about all of the new smells and forget that I’m supposed to be doing a job. I’m potty trained and will listen to your every command if you adopt me and promise to reward me with treats. Respect me and I'll give it back 10 fold. Love me and I’ll love you like you're the only other living thing in the world. 1/6/25 Smiley would be a perfect companion for any dog lover. He is very playful and his nose is in almost everything he can get into, investigating everyone and everything new to him. He follows cues on call as long as he knows there’s a treat in it for him. If you don’t have a treat for him after asking him to do something he will stare at you and give a “huff” - he does not appreciate working for nothing. Hahah! Every morning Smiley enters the day with his own form of yoga - full body wiggles lead by the happiest tail wagging there ever was. He flaps his ears very loudly, smiles at you and hits a downward facing dog, booty up and face down! He loves playing tug and fetch. He also loves destroying footballs, volleyballs and soccer balls. Cat problem? Smiley is your guy. He will chase them off your property solely on principle. No treats needed for this trick. Smiley has a fabulous personality and really needs a home to call his own. Smiley 1/8/25Smiley is food driven and will not give my kind of affection without food or treats. He likes it when you put a blanket over him when he is ready to go to sleep; all curled up. He will sleep next to you when he wants to lay down on his own time; not when you call him or offer him a spot next to you. He has bad gas and uses it against you when he does not get what he wants. Overall, Smiley is a spoiled, lovable dog that has a lot of attitude and is very smart. My favorite thing Smiley does is he gives me a kiss and hug, when I ask, before he gets his meals. I fill up his food and water bowl when he is laying down on his place waiting. I get on one knee and ask for a hug and kiss, wagging his tail, and then I tell him GO EAT he then inhales his food. I will also miss his smile every time he greets me after waking up from any sleep. I will not miss his over[-active energy spurts when he is being Smiley The Dog, going crazy and wild running in circles, rolling on his back trying to bite his own paws and legs, jumping up at you playfully, while putting holes in my clothes. His favorite toy is anything he can chew on, real bones, heavy duty rope, and a tire full of food. He loves deli bites, pepperoni slices, and real chicken. Smiley can tell the difference between processed food and the Real-Deal. If you have a big yard and another dog, Smiley can get along with, Smiley would be one happy dog to gain your love, affection, and attention. Smiley 1/15/24Smiley is now working on his crawl into a barrel roll. We are working on all the cues he has already knows to keep him accustomed to doing his cues on call. Smiley has mastered these cues, but can be distracted at times. His focus and attention/look is good. His sit, down, come, wait, off, place, stay, through (hoops and tunnels), leave it, by me, belly, kennel, roll, back, spin, and stand are awesome. He loves go-see and find it. Up and Get Off is a game to him. Smiley will play fetch with a ball and drop it, but when he feels like you will not give it back, he will start to play keep away. He loves playing tug with a rope and has chewed through heavy duty ropes. Smiley is very strong and hates to lose. Smiley’s loose leash walking is very good up front but challenging on your side, he likes to be in front but with patience and authority he will fall in line eventually. Major distractions are a challenge. Once Smiley is accustomed to his surroundings and environment his attention and focus are better. Right now Smiley is 80% focused and 20% distracted. Potty training is going really well; 99.9% on the Rotten Tomatoes scale. If Smiley has an accident inside it is the fault of his human. Smiley will run in circles, look out the window, put both paws on the outside door scratching, and he will bark aggressively when he needs to go outside. But do not fall for the aggressive bark too often, He will trick you into playtime.Smiley 1/20/25If Smiley could talk he would say I am a needy person that wants all the attention I can get out of him. He would say his handler is very strict, demanding, and always telling him what to do. His handler makes him potty on his time schedule, and feeding him when it is convenient for him. In Smiley’s words alone. My handler plays way too much and is always demanding me to take treats he offers me. His favorite thing to do to me is make me sit and/or lay down for some dry, nasty, and boring kibble. He also likes to wake me up every morning at 7 am to use the bathroom when I would rather sleep in and go when I want. My handler makes me play fetch. The only reason I play with him is so I can get the real good smelly tasty treats out of him; once those treats are gone, fetch is over. I would rather play with the tug rope and chew it up in pieces, but he never gives me enough time to get my molars on the rope; so I can pulverize it. I have taught my handler to follow me on walms, turn when I want to, and even sit when I sit. When I roll around in the dirt and grass, he has to clean it off and it is very amusing. I have also taught my handler to clean-up my potty pooh, and to wipe my booty, so I can feel clean and sit on his bed without any wipe-outs on his white sheets. I love it when he sleeps on his side, belly out running in his sleep. I will miss that the most, and when he has to chase me around the room when I do not want to go outside because I am having too much fun watching his TV and all the funny commercials. My handler likes to air out the room, when I do not do what I am supposed to be doing. I love putting my nose in everything in the room and taking all the good things into my crate. I really like to take his socks, towels, and even his jacket. It is his fault, he knows to hang up his clothes instead of leaving it unattended on the floor, with all my other toys. My handler does not mind me eating up my tire-toys into pieces or chewing my Nya bone to the nub. If he leaves the top off of the food box, it is his fault if I get in it and eat as much as I can. No matter what my handler has his hands full trying to keep me in line and out of trouble. Plus, he lets me play a lot with other dogs, as long as I don’t bite the other dogs too hard, and play too rough with the other weenie dogs. The weenie dogs always have a bark that is way louder than their bite. I just like to play rough and be mouthy about it. All in all my handler spoils me, and just doesn’t know it!!!!Please apply to adopt at: http://www.pawsgh.org

Great with commands8/15/24What’s up world it’s that big dog Tank here coming at you live from SCCC Freedom Tails program where we’re sponsored by them cool cats over at PAWS of Grays Harbor, wait… did someone say cat?!?! Oh yeah, that was me! Anyway… I get here and they hand me over to this tall skinny human and his accomplice, a shorter stocky guy. I’m thinking to myself, this is going to be easy! I’m going to be able to do what I want when I want. But oh man was I wrong! They are not the ones to tango with, let me tell you. They got me stopping at doors and sitting, and to make things worse I can't walk through until I make eye contact and get the ok! I mean, I’m the biggest dog on this block! But the flip side of it all is that they really are just trying to make sure I succeed and get to a forever home with a new loving family. Till next time, Tank!---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------8/25/24 What’s up big world? It’s your boy Tank Dogg over here at Freedom Tails. I have a joke for you… Why did the cat cross the road? To run away from me of course!! LOLMan, I’m funny but my handlers don’t think so. They’re like you better not be chasing cats. You hear? I just smile and say, yeah I guess so. It’s time to tell you about my week. I feel great. I have not been this healthy in my life. This new chapter is starting out great. For me, I get personal trainers. They like to tell me what to do and give me treats if I do it. Not bad right? Hopefully I get my yellow bandana today. If I do, I will get more freedom and more work to do. That’s it for this week. Wish me luck!!! Tank-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------9/12/24This is your boy, Tank!! And you know the rest. It’s been another week of training and cues; I am just getting ready for graduation. I can’t believe I’m already halfway through this program and I have learned so much in the time I have been here. I just hope they find me a good family that I can love and hopefully they have a big yard!!Well, it’s time for me to get back to work. I will fill you in on the news next week!! Ruff Ruff----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------9/19/24What’s up my peoples, it’s your boy Tank Dogg coming at you from SCCC Freedom Tails program. For all of you that are new and not yet wiped yet, Freedom Tails is the place that dogs go to for training in LIMA( least, invasive, minimal aversive training). So it goes like this; PAWS of Grays Harbor evaluates us and then sends us here for a 12 week cues in behavior and basic obedience training. So yeah, that’s where I’m at and getting lots of training every day. Cues, cues, and cues. Sit, wait, with me, look/focus, down, stand, come, etc. At first, I was defiant and not willing to change my wild dog ways, but let me fill you in on something that they don’t tell you when get off the change bus, these guys that have been down for a long minute have all the time in the world and patience to stand by and wait for you to do what they have asked of you. So, I found out the hard way at first. Now I just go along with them and do as I am asked; well for the most part! I’m coming around you can say. Well I am going to take a nap. I’ll talk to you next week!! Tank Dogg___________________________________________________________________________________________12/18/24Hello everyone, I am Tank’s primary handler. Tank is a 4 year old, 80 pound, male, American Bulldog pit mix. He is predominately shiny black with white markings on his feet, chest, throat, and has a white patch on the right side of his snout that connects to the white on his throat. He also has brindle-like brown markings ( brown streaks and spots) that are apparent when you look up close. He also has white fleck-marks on his face- making him an adorable companion. At first Tank was quite mouthy when I would give him physical attention: lots of teeth at about 5% of his bite. This has been addressed appropriately over the last few weeks, and now he only does it when he gets ramped up and the bite has gone down to 2-3%. He has responded well to a nurturing kind approach. Tank is reactive to some people and dogs, yet with most people and some dogs he gets along just fine. We have been zealously working with Tank on his reactivity; consequently, we have noticed a remarkable change in his behavioral patterns surrounding his aggression which if I had to guess is merely his fear and anxieties produced by his environment-just my speculation. What I can objectively report is that Tank’s ability to calm down has improved significantly. A situation that was once uncomfortable is now much easier to maintain. His heartbeat, his whimpering, and his pull on the leash have all softened; and I can often get him to look at me in situations that previously he would simply refuse. This does still happen from time to time- especially if there are multiple distractions. Overall, Tank is a wonderful, gentle dog that just needs the right environment to be successful. Tank is a healthy, happy, cuddly friend that will make a great pet companion. He has healthy teeth, nails, skin, and fur. He enjoys toys for short periods and he loves moderate to high value treats. He goes to his kennel when asked (most of the time) and he is 99.999% potty trained. 12/19/24 The required cues, this week, for Tank are sit, down, and stand. Tank is a very good sitter and does equally well with down when the ground is dry, wet surfaces not so good. Stand is a work in progress; however he knows the cue now, so it’s just a matter of repetition to perfect it. Currently loose leash walking is our primary training to include “By Me.” These commands are asking Tank to sit by my left side and “with me,” which is asking him to walk next to me- similar to heel but less restrictive. Tank is making good progress in low distraction scenarios. Tank is 99.999% potty trained and he talks to us saying, rabble-rabble-rabble when he needs to go outside. It is quite peculiar because it is as if he is actually trying to talk. As for “down,” at this point it is more of a flattened ready to pounce stance. We are working on getting him to lay on his side more.Tank 1/9/25Tank is most definitely independent! He loves high value treats, approves of medium value treats most of the time, and often rejects low-value treats (kibble/milk bones). Tank is usually relaxed - chilling out in one of his favorite resting spots: 1. my bed 2. his crate 3. His place/bed. That is his preference order. My favorite thing about Tank is his character. He is most often happy and likes to investigate stuff. New things, people of dog things, intrigue him and will start wagging his tail and body- he bends to the left when excited sort of like a hot dog. Endearing Facts: Tank likes to look out the window. He stands to do it; he looks super cute when he looks- wagging his tail and turning his head side to side. He has learned to cuddle without using his teeth. His going outside routine always includes him strolling over to the door to my door and back. Then, he lets me harness him, but wait before we clip the harness, he needs to stretch.Although, annoying, he tosses my bedding by sliding around after coming in from the rain. When Tank has a temper tantrum he uses his front paws and presses on my bed over and over; incredibly funny!Tank 1/16/25This week, Tank is focusing on the cue “stay.” While he does very well in no distraction situations, the more distractions that stack up around him the less likely he is to stay. Sometimes, he will just stand up and stay in the general area to turn and see what’s going on. Some people and most dogs will cause Tank to rush to the fence, to either bark or simply show his eagerness to play. Tank has almost mastered “sit.” Tank still will not always sit for other people (or even me if too distracted). He will sometimes sit when I give him a cue for a different task/behavior. Tank is progressing well with “kennel” and “crate.” He doesn’t jump on me anymore except when I am preventing him from getting to things that distract him: people and playful/angry dogs. Tank is a true adventurer, so loose leash walking is a chore. Without distractions he does well once he gets a chance to settle in. Recently, I have started walking him on a long leash, 2 short leashes, and this has been a good experience for him; he even comes back to check in with me much more often than he does on a single short leash. I use the longer leash in Behavior Adjustment Training when other dogs are playing in the yard. We travel around the outside of the fence 15-20 feet away. HE IS 99.9999% POTTY TRAINED!!!Tank 2/6/25The funniest thing we have experienced with Tank happened just yesterday. With several inches of snow piled up in the Freedom Tails’ dog yard, two of the dog handlers decided to make a snow dog (like a snowman only a dog). The one we made was rather large, like a St Bernard. The snow dogs look very much like a real dog…well if your name is Tank the dog. He was super frightened by the snow dog. I barely got him into the yard, even then, he hunched down (hiding) and would only walk a few feet into the yard- eyes glued to this huge creature. Slowly he crept, and then Tank started barking up a storm, as if trying to scare the snow dog away. All I could do was laugh, but I got him outta there, so he could relax. Last night, Tank’s secondary handler was finally able to get him to greet the snow dog. Sniff, sniff, sniff. Tank did a full investigation. When I took him out the next morning, Tank went straight over to the snow dog and lifted his leg, then proceeded to tear the snow creature down with his paws and chomp, chomp, chomping big pieces with his teeth. The WHOLE episode was hilarious.Tank 1/23/25My most favorite thing about my handler is that he knows how to communicate with me, and of course my favorite word is “Yes,” because that usually means I am getting a treat! My handler is also sensitive to my needs. For example, when I hear the voice of someone I know outside my door, I like to jump up in the window and look. Instead of telling me to get down, he says, “ What does the puppy see?” This makes me happy so I wag, wag, wag my tail. My trainer and I both have a lot of energy. When it’s time to go outside and play or train, yet inside, we both like to just relax and stay chill. I guess you could say we are a lot alike in this respect. My trainer did did give me one toy that I really, really like to chew on. It’s a rubber squeaky toy. It will keep me occupied for up to 20 minutes sometimes. I do like treats. Any high value treat will do. Have I taught my trainer anything? Hah. I have taught my trainer all about patience. My trainer has one habit that stands out most to me; he likes to get up early and sit at his desk drinking coffee. This is when I know it time for me to get up and stretch. THEN I STEAL HIS BED!!!!!Please apply to adopt at: http://www.pawsgh.org

Story
Hope is our newest addition here at PAWS of GH. She was left on our doorstep in the dark hours of a winter Washington morning. We took her in with open arms while is in search of her forever home. She does the best with our team of lady staff members and is not too fond of men. One of her most favorite activities ever is riding in the car, shotgun of course! She also loves to hang out in her big comfy dog bed with all of her toys. She is very clean and well mannered and never makes any messes in her room. We are taking things slow as she is in the recovery process from her recent spay. We are unsure about her level of friendliness with other dogs as she is currently not showing us that she wants doggy friends. That might change once she is back on her feet but we want to give her the time she needs to heal completely before trying any doggy play sessions. We do believe she came from a home with cats but no official cat test has been performed yet. We are still getting to know her and will update her description with more detail soon!If you are interested in miss Hope, please fill out an application and schedule an appointment to meet her! https://service.sheltermanager.com/asmservice?account=ks0654&method=online_form_html&formid=14Please apply to adopt at: http://www.pawsgh.org

My name's Jeff! But I prefer to be called Jeffwey because it's cute and sweet like me. I am in search of a new family and a new cozy home so please schedule an appointment to come and meet me! My previous owners abandoned me here at PAWS early one wet, cold, and rainy morning so I'm still trying to figure things out and get aquatinted with all these new people. I'd have to say, I think I'm doing great so far. Everyone here gives me yummy treats and I LOVE FOOD so anyone that gives me a snack gets added to my list of friends. I also love balls, the orange chuck it ones to be specific so I'll take that bribe as well. I know how to sit but I have so much more to learn and so much more world to see. Let's go adventure together! Or just hang out on the couch, I enjoy snuggles and cuddles as well. I hope to see you soon! - JeffweyPlease apply to adopt at: http://www.pawsgh.org

Story
HI - I'M SANDY! I'm a 6-1/2-year-old sweet snuggler girl who needs a foster or forever home! I've been waiting for TWO YEARS for someone to choose me. I love to cuddle, hang out and watch TV, and go for walks, hikes, and other adventures. I do well with some dogs (I used to live in a home with a female dog), but prefer people to other dogs so I can get all of the attention. If you're looking for a snuggler, someone to share your bed and hug, I'm it! I truly am a lap dog, and I crave human attention and affection. I'm also super happy, and am just waiting for my person or people to come along. I weigh about 56 lbs. I would love a home for the holidays!

Story
HI - I'M BRODY! I'm a handsome pit mix who needs a foster or forever home! I am about 4-years old, weigh 68 lbs., and am a lovebug. I love to snuggle! I was rescued from a California shelter awhile back and now am in Montesano. Back in the day, I was a shelter favorite and helped the staff in the office. I also take treats gently. I have done well with some other dogs in the past. I would probably do well with a calm female dog. I do have some resource guarding issues when it comes to food, but otherwise am a good boy. Please email for an application.

Story
HI - I'M OTIS! I'm a sweet and active 5-year-old rednose male Pit Bull Terrier in need of a foster or forever home. I was given up by my owners (for no fault of my own), and now am looking for new people to love me! I came from a home with another dog, and could possibly live with another dog again with a slow and thoughtful introduction. I LOVE human attention and affection, and would be great for someone who works from home. I can jump pretty high and would make a great agility dog. (A 6-foot fence is recommended.) I love, love, love to cuddle, and will give kisses. I also love to chase tennis balls, and then tear them apart! I would do well with an active person or family with older kids. Can you foster or adopt me? I currently weigh about 50 lbs. Please email for an application.

Story
MEET HANDSOME BOO! Boo is a small and fun-loving 2-year-old blue & white Pit Bull Terrier/American Bully in need of a foster or forever home! He weighs only about 50 lbs. He was rescued from an overcrowded California shelter, where he was kenneled with another dog. Boo is a delight to have around! He gets along well with most dogs, though can be selective at times. He's also a fence jumper! So a high fence is needed, though he would also do well in a condo or an apartment. Overall Boo is a fun-loving dog, who would do well with an active person or people who can take him for walks, hikes or other outings. Please email for an application.

Story
HI - I'M VAIL! (My foster mom calls me Tuohy) I'm a sweet & loving female 4-1/2-year old Pit Bull Terrier girl in need of a forever home. I'm currently in a foster home in Washington. I'm a small, petite pittie girl and weigh only about 48 lbs. I love people and am quite the snuggler. I will look into your eyes and lean in close, because I want to be near you. I'm also quite playful. I've tested well with some dogs but can be reactive to others on a leash, so would do best with a dog-savvy owner. I'd love a warm bed, a person or people to love me and a chance to go for a walk or on road trips. Can you adopt me? Please email for an application.

Story
MEET GABE! Gabe is a 6-year-old sweet and stocky Pit Bull Terrier in need of a foster or forever home. He was originally rescued from a crowded California shelter. He has waited awhile and keeps getting overlooked. His nose is shaped like a heart and he's ready to love you! Gabe loves humans and loves to go on road trips, walks, and other outings. He makes a great passenger. He also loves to play fetch and can self-entertain. Gabe is good with some dogs but not others - same with cats! So Gabe would probably thrive as the only pet in the home. He weighs about 60 lbs. We're hoping Gabe can find a home in the new year because he deserves it. Please email for an application.
