Story
Meet Chessy! Hello! My name is Chessy, but my foster mom also calls me Chester Cheetah because I’m a cool dude with a heart of gold. I’m a 4- to 5-year-old, 60-pound Lab/Pit mix, and I’m searching for my forever home – could it be with you? My journey hasn’t been easy, but I’m proof that love and kindness can make all the difference. I was rescued just two hours before I was set to be euthanized on Christmas Eve, and I’ve been making the most of my second chance ever since. My foster mom tells me every day that I’m an incredibly sweet and special boy, and I believe her! I may have a few scars from my past, but don’t let that fool you—I’m all about love, cuddles, and companionship. When I first arrived, I was a little shy, but I have never shown any aggression. Once I realize you’re a friend, I’ll melt into your lap (yes, I consider myself a lap dog!) and soak up all the affection you have to give. Even my foster mom’s son, who is a very tall 6’9”, won me over in no time! I’m a polite, well-mannered guy who: ✔️ Walks beautifully on a leash, staying right by your side ✔️ Is housebroken and crate-trained (I even put myself to bed sometimes!) ✔️ Rarely barks—I'm a quiet and relaxed companion ✔️ Plays when it's time to play and chills when it's time to relax I get along great with other dogs, including my two miniature dachshund foster sisters, and I’ve done well with small children, cats, and even chickens in my past foster home! I’d love to have a doggy playmate my size, but I’d also be happy as your one-and-only as long as I get plenty of love and attention. Since I’m a sensitive soul, I thrive in a calm home where positive reinforcement is used. Yelling scares me, but a gentle voice and patience help me feel safe and loved. I’m ready to find a forever family that will cherish me as much as I’ll cherish them. If you’re looking for a loyal, affectionate companion who will be your biggest fan, I might just be the perfect match for you. Fill out an application and come meet me—I can’t wait to start our adventure together! 🐾 Love, Chessy 🐾 Our standard adoption fee is $375 cash or check and $385 credit card ($10 processing fee). . It includes spay/neuter when age appropriate at our participating vets, age appropriate core vaccinations, fecal testing, deworming, flea and tick preventative,1st vet visit at one of our participating vets, and micro-chipping. We must have an application, conduct a phone interview, and meet your entire family to approve an adoption. Applications will not be reviewed unless fully completed. An application does not commit you to adopting and does not guarantee adoption but does allow us to begin the review process. Please email adopt@safehavendogsIL.org for an application or additional details. Please note that the breeds and sizes posted in this biography are educated best guesses and are not guaranteed. Safe Haven Dog Rescue reserves the right to refuse adoption of any dog or puppy to any applicant (adopter) for any reason.

Story
Meet Zilla, a sweet and spunky soul looking for a special home to call her own. Could that be with you or someone you know? Zilla was adopted at just 6 weeks old by a single man in a house with a spacious backyard. Zilla was the best companion his dad could ask for! He loved snuggles, time out in the yard, going for leisure walks, and splashing around in water during the warmer months. Unfortunately, last spring, Zilla’s dad passed away, and with no one to care for Zilla, Anderson Humane stepped up to find another loving home for Zilla to continue his days. Zilla and his dad spent all their time together, so he did not develop coping skills for being left alone. Zilla has demonstrated behaviors in foster homes that align with separation anxiety. This means that Zilla panics if he cannot access his safe person of people. Zilla cannot be left alone, and he becomes more stressed if he is in a crate or behind a closed door. Zilla is looking for a special home that can accommodate his needs, and help his work through his challenges when left alone. Ideally, Zilla would do best with a family who stays more at home, someone who works from home can use pet sitters/dog walkers, and/or has strong support from family and friends to watch Zilla if need be. Zilla does well with children, and cats, is housetrained, and knows his basic cues! Zilla needs to be the only dog in the house but could make the occasional canine friend. Zilla loves to play fetch, play with dog puzzles of squeaky toys, and loves getting pets from people, even the Mailman! The Training team is able to offer management training and support for Zilla while he adapts to his next home. Additionally, we have resources to help find a qualified behavior consultant to help you and Zilla! Could you help us find Zilla his next home? Zilla is an All-Star dog! His adoption comes with some extra benefits at time of adoption. Their adoption appointment includes a discussion with our Training Team, and they will go home with their very own no-pull-harness and a few enrichment goodies to help get them off to a good start! To schedule an appointment to meet Zilla, email info@ahconnects.org (please include your name and phone number), and the staff will be happy to help you! Our dogs and puppies go home spayed/neutered, microchipped, heartworm tested (7 months and over), and up to date on core vaccines, heartworm, flea, and tick preventatives. Their adoption also includes a free-vet exam at one of our participating veterinarians.
