My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Introducing Hennessy!

Affectionate Velcro Dane Silly Active

Hi, I’m Hennessy! I’m a sweet, loving, and playful Great Dane with a knack for making my family laugh. Whether I’m snuggling close or stretching out across the bed like a true bed hog, I always want to be near my people. I can be a little unsure in new situations, but with some reassurance, my goofy and affectionate personality shines through.

When I meet new people, I like to take the lead on introductions. I might give a little growl to announce myself, but once you say my name and let me know you’re friendly, I’m totally fine. If my forever family includes kids, I’d feel most comfortable if they’re 13 years or older.

  • Dogs: I get along best with smaller, non-aggressive dogs. Big dogs with dominant personalities make me nervous, so I’d do great as your one-and-only pup.

  • Cats: I’ve lived with a cat before and am usually okay, though I can get a little bossy if the cat tries to steal my attention or toys.

  • Humans: I adore my people and love being the center of attention. A calm and quiet home with a family who understands my needs would be perfect for me.

I love car rides (windows down, please!), walks, and playing with plush toys. Tug-of-war and zooming around the yard are my specialties! Camping and spending time outdoors are so much fun, but busy or crowded environments can make me anxious. I’m happiest in calm, familiar places where I can relax. Oh, and baths? No problem—I’ll happily indulge if it means snuggles afterward.

I know my basic commands—sit, ignore, down, and stay—but I might need a little extra motivation (hint: treats help!). I’m housebroken and crate-trained, though if left to roam the house alone, I might get into a bit of mischief. I walk well on a leash, though my “drunken sailor” style might make you laugh as I sway a bit. I do have some resource-guarding tendencies, so I’ll need a family willing to work with me on that.

Health & Special Needs:

  • Diet: I have a sensitive stomach and stick to a special diet—no poultry for me, please!

  • Skin: I manage some skin sensitivities with natural treatments like essential oils.

  • Ears: My adorable extra ear skin causes me to shake my head a lot, but it’s just part of my charm.

Forever Home Wish List:

  • A calm, quiet environment where I can feel safe and loved.

  • A family with kids aged 13+ who understand big dogs like me.

  • Ideally, I’d love to be the only dog, but I could coexist with a smaller, laid-back canine sibling.

  • A physical fence isn’t required but is recommended for my outdoor playtime.

  • I love spending time with my family but can do well in a crate for up to 8 hours during the workweek if needed. I have also been trusted with free roam, but I am currently only trusted with 4 hours of free roam at a time.

If you love camping and snuggling and want a loyal, funny companion to share life’s adventures with, I might be your perfect match. I can’t wait to find my forever family and start making memories together!

More about this rescue

Upper Midwest Great Dane Rescue was started in 2008 by a group of Dane lovers who desire to help Danes in need. The rescue is made up of all volunteers who lovingly give of their time and money to help these wonderful dogs. Volunteers include people from every walk of life, all with one thing in common, love of Great Danes.

Each animal coming to the rescue is temperament tested, given a physical, vaccinated, wormed, checked for heartworm and tick borne illnesses and treated as needed. All dogs are sterilized before being re homed. The dog is then placed in a foster home to wait for someone to love it forever.
