My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Introducing Nala!

Playful Affectionate Energetic Social

Personality: Nala is a sweet and lively Great Dane. She is incredibly affectionate and playful and thrives on being near her humans. Nala loves engaging in play with her stuffed toys and enjoys outdoor activities like running in the yard or taking daily walks. Her foster family describes her as a loving companion with a heart of gold who brings joy to any environment.

Socialness: Nala is very social and enjoys meeting new people. She has done great interacting with children on walks but does not currently live with children. Due to her high energy levels and not realizing her size, it would be best if any children in her forever home are 8+ years old.

While she may bark at passing dogs on walks, she has shown no aggression and is always eager to give friendly licks to those she meets. She loves her foster family’s male and female resident Danes. Though she hasn’t had extensive exposure to other dogs outside her foster home, she is expected to do well with proper introductions. Nala is good with cats and has shown patience with foster kittens, though she occasionally needs redirection.

Likes:

  • Playing with stuffed toys

  • Snuggling with her people

  • Daily walks

  • Running in the yard

  • Tug-of-war games

  • Suckling on her stuffed toys for comfort

Dislikes:

  • Being left alone for long periods

  • Being crated for extended durations (due to past experiences)

  • Other animals near her food bowl

Training: Nala is housebroken, with occasional accidents when left alone for too long. Her accidents and barking while alone are likely due to some separation anxiety. She is crate-trained but prefers free roam or being confined to a room for shorter durations.

Nala knows commands like sit, shake, and come, and she is learning to walk on a leash. Her leash manners are improving with the use of a prong collar, but she may need continued training.

Health: Nala is in good health. She is spayed and gastropexied. She is recovering from a bacterial skin infection caused by an allergic reaction, likely to chicken, and is now on a beef-only diet. Nala’s foster family has observed that she is thriving with her current food and medical care. Due to her history, she uses a slow feeder for meals and has controlled water intake to prevent gulping. She did test positive for Lyme disease but has shown no issues from it and has completed her treatment plan.

Forever Home Requirements:

  • A fenced yard is required to ensure her safety due to her energy level and love for running and playing.

  • A home with children 8+ years old and/or adults who can match her energy level and provide regular interaction. A family with another dog to play with or frequent doggie daycare visits would be ideal.

  • Nala needs a forever family who is home more often than not. Being away for 4 hours or less at a time is ideal. She could also do well in a doggy daycare.

  • Nala must be fed separately or in a controlled environment due to her resource-guarding tendencies around her food bowl.

Fun Facts: Nala loves having zoomies in the yard and playing fetch. She adores body rubs and has an infectious zest for life.

Nala’s foster family describes her as an absolute joy and believes she will bring happiness and laughter to any family willing to embrace her playful energy and affectionate nature. With proper care, attention, and love, she will thrive in a forever home that matches her playful, loving spirit. More about this rescue

Upper Midwest Great Dane Rescue was started in 2008 by a group of Dane lovers who desire to help Danes in need. The rescue is made up of all volunteers who lovingly give of their time and money to help these wonderful dogs. Volunteers include people from every walk of life, all with one thing in common, love of Great Danes.

Each animal coming to the rescue is temperament tested, given a physical, vaccinated, wormed, checked for heartworm and tick borne illnesses and treated as needed. All dogs are sterilized before being re homed. The dog is then placed in a foster home to wait for someone to love it forever.
