Mayes is a sweet female dog who was surrendered by her owner of 1 week on December 24th due to having an incident with the resident cat. Due to this, she is strongly recommended a non-cat home. Despite this, the owner noted that she is friendly, docile, and extremely loving. She is confused and scared in the noisy shelter and is looking for another place to call home!

Behavior Notes:
Per volunteer 12/26/24:
Volunteer noted I approached Mayes kennel and got super low as I opened it. She came up to me and I easily leashed her. She seemed a little scared but gave some low wags. She walked outside really nicely and in the run she seemed to open up really well. She knows sit and allowed me to pet her with no issues. She was easy to return to kennel as she hopped right in.
Per staff 12/26/24: KENNEL PRESENTATION:
Mayes was curled up next to her bed when I approached. She looked up with semi hard eyes and did not come forward. I tried to toss her some treats but she showed no interest in food. When I reached in with the leash she moved forward a bit to sniff it, and allowed me to leash her easily. Once secured she came out on her own slowly.
LEASH SKILLS:
Pulls moderately but was very fearful and trying to run away
HANDLING:
Mayes was fearful and nervous in the room with me, so I took things extra slow with her. She followed me around the room closely, keeping close to her handler. She would cower away if I reached for her while standing, but when I crouched down she would come up with low wags and soft eyes. Mayes prefers a low, slow approach to feel most comfortable. When I sat down she would stand next to me, leaning against me lightly and allowing all over pets. She would flinch and cower whenever I reached over her or moved too quickly, but never escalated past a hard stare and a flinch. She allowed all handling but did not like her tail touched. She just tucked it in and ran away when I tried to touch it. Mayes took treats gently, but only liked pup-eroni, and showed me that she knows “sit” and “shake/paw”. She would cower away when I picked up the mop, so she appears fearful of large objects being moved around. Her previous owners also noted that she could be "protective of her own around strangers", so I had another staff member enter the room to see her reaction. She did very well, and greeted the new person even better than she greeted me! She went right up with some mid level wags and sniffs, and allowed the new person to crouch down and give her some all over love. Mayes even leaned in happily for the stranger! Overall, Mayes is a timid, fearful girl that needs someone who understands her fear and can help her gain the confidence to be brave!
PLAY:
No interest, too fearful of sudden movement
