My name is Hans!

Hans is an eight-year-old brown and black 72 pound German Shepherd that came into the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 1/17 as a stray. When he got out into the yard, he first did his business and then put his nose to the ground and spent considerable time investigating the yard. I purposely included some photos that shows his long nose. He was so focused on using his sense of smell that I was unable to engage him with squeaky toys or treats. It wasn’t until I took him inside that he even became aware of me. At that point, he realized I had treats in my smock pocket, and he kept nudging my pockets with his nose. He did sit for treats but grabs them out of your hand. He will need training to learn to take a treat gently. He did come to me and seemed to enjoy having his ears scratched. He wants to make friends. He’s well mannered in that he doesn’t jump on you. Hans walked right beside me on a leash without even pulling. He didn’t have a problem meeting other dogs. He would not do well in an apartment due to his size. He would enjoy a yard so he can get out to stretch his legs and get some fresh air. However, he wants to be an inside dog mostly because he wants to be with his people. A pile of blankets or a big fluffy bed would be right up his line.
