Story
Loki is a 2-year-old male Border Collie mix is the sweetest boy ever. Weighing 60 pounds, he’s a big snuggler who thinks he’s a lap dog, always ready to climb onto his humans for cuddles. He loves to give hugs, and will put both paws on your shoulders and nuzzle into them. This quirky pup also likes to lay down to eat his food (kind of like the rest of us who eat on the couch!). Loki has made great strides in house training and does well with potty breaks every 3-4 hours. At night, he might have an accident, but he adapts well to pee pads if needed. He isn’t crate-trained but does well sleeping in a separate room, where he’s calm, quiet, and non-destructive. Loki is pretty quiet overall, and while he loves being close to his humans, he settles well when left alone for a few hours. While he’s curious and playful with other dogs during slow introductions, he may need to be an only dog or live in a home with an experienced owner willing to work through some resource-guarding behavior. He is okay meeting other dogs if they are outside together, but inside gets a little bit trickier, so he has his own room that he seems very happy with. When it comes to cats, Loki shows curiosity without aggression and could likely share a home with feline friends. He loves all people, and has done well with older children, but his excitement and tendency to jump might be too strong for very young children. Loki is moderate-energy—content with lounging around but also enjoying bursts of playtime, especially fetch with tennis balls or toys. Loki is so smart and playful—he is happy to toss his toys around to himself and pounce on them, or bring a toy to you if you can't reach! He is affectionate, smart, and eager to please, making him a great addition to any family. A fenced yard is recommended so that Loki can explore outside, then after his adventure he's happy to return to his favorite place—right next to his people. If you’re looking for a loving, goofy, and deeply affectionate companion, Loki is ready to fill your life with hugs!If you are interested in this dog, fill out an application at this link to get the ball rolling - https://pethavenmn.org/adopt/adoptable-dogs/dog-adoption-application/The adoption fee is $450. Story
Meet Frank, a 1 year-old Border Collie/Labrador mix. Frank is a spirited and lovable boy bursting with energy and affection! He’s the perfect balance of playful and cuddly—whether he is chasing his favorite ball or curling up for snuggles he is happy.Frank can be a little shy and nervous at first, especially when meeting new people or hearing loud noises, but once he warms up, he’s a bundle of fun and energy. He’s incredibly intelligent and absolutely adores puzzle and enrichment games, which keep his curious mind engaged. When he’s feeling comfortable, Frank can entertain himself with a ball for hours, showing off his playful and independent side. While he’s still getting used to walks and the sights and sounds of the outside world, Frank is great on a leash. He’s learning to build his confidence and will benefit from a patient and understanding adopter who can help him navigate his fears.Frank thrives on companionship and prefers to be around people and other dogs. Though he does okay in his own space when needed, he’s happiest when he’s part of the action. He’s also making great strides in training, quickly learning commands like “sit,” “stay,” and “come.” Frank responds well to “no” and “down.” He’s still learning which furniture is ok to be on and which isn’t, so he’d do best with someone willing to continue guiding him in this area. He is eager to learn and he’s a fast learner, so with guidance, he’ll master it in no time. Fully potty trained, Frank is a dream when it comes to house manners.Frank’s favorite thing in the world? Snuggling up in your lap for belly rubs. He’s the ultimate cuddle buddy and loves to share affection. He’s good with cats and other dogs, but we’re not sure how he feels about kids yet. A quieter home would likely be best for him, as loud noises and yelling make him nervous. The only things Frank isn’t a fan of are car rides and being in a crate—he finds cars pretty scary and will need some time and patience to get used to traveling. While he’s not a fan of crates, he’s been a very good boy staying in a bedroom when his foster parents are away.If you’re looking for a loyal, loving companion who’s smart, playful, and full of potential, Frank might just be the perfect match for you!https://pethavenmn.org/adopt/adoptable-dogs/dog-adoption-application/The adoption fee is $450. Story
Hi I am Shiloh a fluffy bundle of joy!I am a working breed, highly intelligent and a high energy guy. I play hard and love to run and herd anything that moves. I would do well on a farm with a job to do or with someone who has a place for me to run off my energy. I show great promise to be a great working dog. I am just recently learning to play with other adult dogs as I have been an only dog in my household until surrendered. My favorite pastimes are eating, running, sleeping and chewing the laces out of my all of my foster mom’s shoes!Because of my built in herding instincts and the fact that I am still a puppy, I like to nip and my puppy teeth are sharp. I would not be a good fit for a house with small children as I don’t know any boundaries yet. Although, I could learn, I am not there yet. My foster mom is working with me on manners, and I’m learning as fast as I can. My foster mom has started on house training with puppy pads and says I am doing an amazing job.Disclaimer: I am located in Texas. I can be transported once adopted. Transport fee is $250.*Disclaimer: This pet is located in Texas. Once adoption is finalized the pet will be transported to the adopters location for an additional fee (currently $230-$250).* The adoption fee helps to cover some of the cost of vetting the animal prior to adoption (spay/neuter, microchipping, and up to date vaccinations). Please fill out an adoption application to be considered for adoption. https://service.sheltermanager.com/asmservice?account=ch2817&method=online_form_html&formid=41

Snapshot of Gordy: Size? Medium-Large (48 lbs) Activity Level? High -he is a border collie mix, after all! ;) Noise Level? Low Good with Dogs? Yes Good with Cats? Yes Good with Kids? Likely, but no children in foster home. Good with Strangers? Yes Potty Trained? Yes, with appropriate supervision and a schedule. Crate Trained? Yes Shedding? Medium About Gordy: Hi, my name is Gordy! I also respond to Gordo, Gordito, Sir Gordon, and Cheesy Gordita Crunch. I am an adorable border collie/lab mix who wants nothing more than a home to call my own--and, preferably, a ball to call my own as well. I LOVE to chase balls, and if no balls are around, I'll make do with chasing anything you throw for me--stuffies, sticks, ropes... the options are endless. My foster mom says that I'm amazingly well adjusted given my relatively rough history. I was 1 of 16 (!!) dogs rescued from a local home, and I haven't had the best care before now. For example, you might notice that I have a bit of a limp due to a wonky front foot. The vet says that this is likely caused by a ruptured tendon that didn't heal right. Fortunately, it doesn't slow me down at all! I also recently had 8 front teeth removed, including 3 of my canines, which were all fractured, likely from biting at the bars of a crate. Still, nothing can bring down my happy-go-lucky personality (except, of course, when my foster mom puts away my ball for the night). Something else you should know about me is that I tested positive for two tick-borne diseases, Anaplasmosis and Lyme. I received treatment and I don’t have any signs of chronic Lyme infection - which is AMAZING news! I will likely continue to test positive for both of these for the rest of my life due to chronic antibodies. It is possible that I could develop side effects from Lyme later in my life but for now I’m a happy and healthy boy! Here's a bit more from my foster mom: An ideal home for Gordy would be one that can give him lots of mental and physical stimulation. He really enjoys chewing on bones and bully sticks, playing tug with toys, and playing fetch. He's also a smart boy and has picked up on sit, lay down, and crate up very quickly. We're working on some new commands for him to show off! I think he'd do great with someone who enjoys having a dog that can be a companion to them on a variety of adventures! Gordy is fixed, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations for his age. Story
Name: Ballet Breeds: Border Collie Age: Puppy Sex: Female Size: Medium when fully grown Ballet is a gorgeous Border Collie puppy who was brought into the shelter after she was found wandering after puppy curfew. No one came for her so she is now looking for a home who will love her, train her, and put that smartypants border collie brain to work. Ballet is smart as a whip and learns so fast. She absolutely thrives on being given something to do to. Puzzle toys, flirt pole, training—yes please! Ballet is typical puppy so housetraining is a work in progress but she keeps her crate clean for the workday and overnight. She is fantastic with other dogs but will herd them playfully which doesn’t always go over well with some dogs especially the little ones. She has not been around cats but would need a proper introduction to them and reminders that they aren’t for play. Ballet is of the mindset that everything is for play! Due to her breed she would be best with older kids or a herding breed experienced home who understands the tendencies to heel nip and chase kiddos to tell them where to go. If you are looking for a super fun dog who wants to join in on adventures, learn anything you want to teach, and keep you active and on your toes, Ballet wants to meet you! Requirements: No special requirements Adoption Fee: $650 + tax. This includes neuter/spay, current vaccinations as age appropriate, deworming, and microchip Interested in adopting? Story
*COURTESY POSTING * Name: Flicker Breeds: Border Collie Age: 3 years old Sex: Male Size: Medium (45 lbs) Flicker is an almost 3-year-old neutered Border Collie (3/31/22) that has been living with me since May of 2023. When I first got Flicker, he hadn't had the greatest start to life and had a lot to learn. I never intended to keep him, but have been lax on attempting to place him as I was strung along by several "interested" parties and ghosted more than once, so put placing him on the back burner. He's easy, happy and healthy here, but I do believe there is a better home out there for him that will allow him to really flourish. Flicker has participated in UpDog, FastCAT, CAT and has started dock diving foundations and is jumping off the dock for toys. He has not actually competed in dock diving yet, but I hope he will at some point in the near future. Flicker did have several months of flyball foundations summer/fall 2023 and picked them up quickly and seemed to enjoy it, so I would think he could relearn those skills and be a successful flyball dog should his handler choose. Flicker has his BCAT, CA, CGC & FTN- although I have not submitted the latter 3 to AKC for official display on his Canine Partners registration. Flicker LOVES fetch- whether it be a ball or frisbee, he will gladly retrieve it for you. I am not a Border Collie person and I believe our lack of success at disc events lies solely on me - he has played UpDog games with pro handlers and has placed in pro division games with them. He and I just don't jive super well and we are not that successful as a team, so I make it a point to go out and have a great time, even if we suck scoring wise He is easy to hand off to play for other people at events. He has lots of disc "aunties" who play rounds with him. Flicker is a typical soft BC, and he needs very minimal correction, if at all. A slightly raised voice usually is enough to stop what he is doing. He lives to worship his person. He knows sit, down, kennel, stay, around, out & place. He has lived with a variety of dogs- including intact males and bossy female APBT and numerous fosters. He has tagged the other dogs while running in the yard, but indoors ignores them for the most part. He does live with cats, but I truly believe a home without cats would be beneficial as he does feel a need to stare and try to herd them any time he is around them, which makes it difficult for him to relax. Even on place, he will not take his eyes off of them. I would prefer he go to a home without cats but that is not a deal breaker with a savvy handler. Flicker had OFAs done for hips (excellent), patellas (normal) and elbows (normal) for my own peace of mind as I got him as a rescue and did not know anything of his lineage / possible structural issues he may have. As far as health goes, he's been great here. He is 43-45lbs and has gotten clean bills of health since I've had him. I have not noticed any food sensitivities. He is also fantastic for all grooming procedures and has never shown any issues with handling. Flicker's one "downfall" is he will go through periods of seemingly forgetting what being housebroken is. He will go months at a time clean in the crate and indoors, not a single accident, and then all of a sudden will have a stint of approx. 2-4 weeks of regular accidents (both urine and feces) and he does not seem to care about whether or not he lays in it etc. It is not a UTI, I think it is behavioral. I am confident an indoor/outdoor setup would solve this issue. It is also entirely possible he would be fine in a home with less stimulus- as I believe that may play a factor in this behavior as well. Flicker crates well (barring the stints of accidents) and crates nicely in the car. He has been environmentally stable everywhere he has gone with me. I am not pressed to move him, he can stay as long as needed. I have debated this over and over for the past year and a half but I truly believe there is a home out there that loves the breed and would cherish him. I admittedly have struggled to bond with him, and that is not his fault at all. He's a great dog, I just have a background in bull breeds ... Which is a lot different from a herdy one. I am asking a reasonable rehoming fee and will send his crate tag, rosettes and flat ribbons, title certs, vet records, collars/tag, sport stickers etc with him. I really would like to see him go to a sport home, he makes a lovely entry level sport dog but also has shown that he is capable of performing at a higher level with a handler that understands the breed. However, I am open to considering an active pet home as well. Requirements: **SPORT HOME PREFERRED** Interested in adopting? Story
This 2-year-old mutt brightens every room he enters! Nitro is all about his humans, offering endless loyalty, snuggles, and wet kisses. At 55 pounds, he’s still a true lap dog at heart, and will always find a way to settle in close and rest his head in your hands. Even though he spent six long months at the shelter, Nitro has an unwavering trust in people. He is house-trained and quick to pick up on rules, so he settled into his foster home with ease. He has come a long way with his crate training. When his foster humans go to work, he settles into his crate nicely with a benebone and a peanut butter kong toy. At night, he goes right to bed now that his crate is next to other resident dogs’ crates. He's making great progress on his confidence and his attachment, so his future family just needs to have patience and consistency in mind. Nitro picks up new manners and skills VERY quickly. We have been working on teaching the “wait” command to build door manners and he’s made significant strides with this, especially when it comes to duration. We are able to put him in a “sit / wait” while placing his meal on the floor and before going through any doors, and he waits several seconds for a release command. He already knows all basic commands and would be a great candidate for continued training in obedience or a sport!Originally believed to be a Shepherd/Cattle Dog mix, Nitro has traits of Black Mouth Cur as well. He’s high-energy and thrives on long daily walks and plenty of activity, but he’s equally content to relax indoors as long as he’s near his people. As long as he gets his daily exercise in, he has no issues with behavior or house manners. He could easily be left out to free roam in the house should his future family choose. He’s proven to be a social and playful dog, doing well with dogs of all sizes. Nitro’s playful side comes alive when he’s chasing toys or playing games of keep-away with his foster brother, always with a big smile on his face. While he hasn’t been around cats yet, his gentle demeanor suggests he could adjust with proper introductions. Nitro has also done really well with small children (3 and 4). In fact, he would probably love to be in a family with kids. He gave them lots of kisses and took treats gently. When they were playing and running around, he wanted to be right in the middle of the play. He even let our nephew stack toys on his back and played tug with him.Whether you’re heading out for a walk or curling up on the couch, Nitro is ready to be your loyal and loving friend! If you are interested in this dog, fill out an application at this link to get the ball rolling - https://pethavenmn.org/adopt/adoptable-dogs/dog-adoption-application/The adoption fee is $450. Story
ADMIRAL AND HIS BUDDIES WILL BE AT A MEET AND GREET/ADOPTION EVENT FRIDAY JANUARY 17 AT ARBEITER BREWERY 3038 MINNEHAHA IN MINNEAPOLIS 6-8:00. Come and cuddle and maybe go home with a friend for life. Admiral and his two siblings were part of a dramatic rescue that is described with words and pictures here. Copy and paste this in your browser. https://docs.google.com/document/d/17_OMYLUjJqXfGH0MgotuP7GgMOPNCCvEWrKZS2OsIYg/edit Making a long story short, 4 puppies were apparently dumped in a remote area where there was no obvious source of food, water or shelter. A Good Samaritan worked over a period of days to rescue three of them. Admiral was injured and needed immediate vet care, the other two needed a warm place to sleep and full food and water bowls. After bringing the three in from the cold they stayed in temporary foster homes until we could transport them to PUP in Saint Paul. Admiral is now healthy, at a good weight, and learning to be a real puppy. You can still see the results of his injuries, but they are well healed, now he just needs to grow some hair where it was shaved. He is the most outgoing of the trio and is playing happily with his siblings and the resident pooches. He is happy in his new environment but still needs work to develop trust with humans. He really wants human interaction but it is a bit scary. He has made amazing progress since his rescue in late December. The vet aged Admiral at about 15 weeks and he weighs 12#, so we expect his adult weight will be between 45-55#. We think he might be a Kelpie/German Shepherd X but that is best guess. 45-55# would be a bit big for a Kelpie, a common herding dog in the area, and small for a Shepherd, so that is probably about right. When we do DNA testing on most dogs from the area they have 20 or more breeds in their heritage. They always have some herding dog, some shepherd, some lab and nearly always some Chihuahua. We expect the same is true of Admiral. Now here is a strange one. Admiral is the smallest of the trio, but he has double rear dew claws. Only 6 purebred dogs have double rear dews and they are all giant dogs. We suspect Admiral might have 2-3% Great Pyrenees in his genetics. All three pups have unusually short tails. The early months are when puppy learns the social skills needed to be a skilled dog in dealing with other dogs and a good citizen in the human world. Adopters should be committed to getting puppy into lots of new and different human social situations, hearing vacuums, trucks, and rattling garbage cans, meeting people who are clapping, laughing, with hats, tools, bikes and skate boards. AND puppy needs many opportunities to meet and greet dogs of all shapes, sizes and dispositions. Just sharing a home with another dog is not as much doggie socializing as puppy needs. If good canine social skills are not learned and maintained during these early months, it will be very difficult to ever master them. Puppy play dates, trips to the pet store, puppy socialization classes and later, obedience classes are particularly important. If all this doggie time and involvement seems like a good idea, you are up for a puppy! As always, a tired dog is a good dog. Because of Heath’s background, the need to work on socialization can not be overstate. But, face it. That is the fun part. Admiral has been vet checked, vaccinated including rabies and de-wormed. He will need at least one additional puppy vaccination at the adopter’s expense. We do place puppies outside the metro area if a firm plan for the alter surgery is in place; we do not ship. His required alter surgery is covered by the adoption fee if it is done at 6 months at the PUP clinic. We require that he be altered at 6 months. If you are at least 21 years old and everyone in your household is on board with adopting a puppy, CALL 651-645-4370 between 7:00 am and 9:30 pm and we will return your call within 24 hours. If you elect to contact us via e-mail it may take several weeks for us to get back to you. Renters must provide proof that you are allowed to have a puppy. If you currently have a companion dog or cat please be prepared to provide a vet reference prior to adoption if requested.
We'll also keep you updated on Heath's adoption status with email updates.

Story
HEATH AND HER BUDDIES WILL BE AT A MEET AND GREET/ADOPTION EVENT FRIDAY JANUARY 17 AT ARBEITER BREWERY 3038 MINNEHAHA IN MINNEAPOLIS 6-8:00. Come and cuddle and maybe go home with a friend for life. Heath and her two brothers were part of a dramatic rescue that is described with words and pictures here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/17_OMYLUjJqXfGH0MgotuP7GgMOPNCCvEWrKZS2OsIYg/edit Making a long story short, 4 puppies were apparently dumped in a remote area where there was no obvious source of food, water or shelter. Heath is now healthy, at a good weight, and learning to be a real puppy. She is playing happily with her siblings and the resident pooches. She is happy in her new environment but still needs work to develop trust with humans. She really wants human interaction but it is a bit scary. She has made amazing progress since her rescue in late December. The vet aged Heath at about 15 weeks and she weighs 16#, so we expect her adult weight will be between 45-55. We think she might be a Kelpie/German Shepherd X but that is best guess. That would be a bit big for a Kelpie, a common herding dog in the area, and small for a Shepherd, so that is probably about right. When we do DNA testing on most dogs from the area they have 20 or more breeds in their heritage. They always have some herding dog, some shepherd, some lab and nearly always some Chihuahua. We expect the same is true of Heath. Heath has been vet checked, vaccinated including rabies and de-wormed.
