I'm a colorful puppy. I was born in the care of Polk County Humane Society to a surrendered mama. My mama is a cutie and so is dad - so I'm destined to paint your heart with love and joy. We are chihuahua, beagle, minpin and who knows what else. Our mama and dad were both about 10 – 12 lbs, so we surely won’t get much bigger than that. If you're interested in adopting me, fill out an adoption application online at www.polkcountyhumanesociety.org/adopt. We are in a foster home and will be going to the vet for our neuter/spay surgeries on 8/16/24. We will be able to go home the very next day. We are getting a lot of applications (as you can imagine with us being so darn cute!) Please don’t call. We just can’t answer so many call with our small staff. The nice people here plan to review the applications on Tuesday, 8/13 and pick a few out to meet us. Please put your application in soon! Some pets are in foster homes or may already have an appointment scheduled, so the appointment is important to make sure I will be available to meet you when you come. Polk County Humane Society is located in Bolivar, Missouri, but also makes transports to the Denver, CO, Des Moines, IA and St. Louis areas twice a month. For potential adopters in those areas, we can do a virtual visit using FaceTime or another app. Just request an appointment using the same link, but note that you want the visit to be virtual and we will call you at the time of the visit once it is confirmed. For transports out of state (CO & IA & MN), there is an additional $100 fee to cover the cost of the transport ($65) and a health certificate from a veteinarian ($35). *SPECIAL NEEDS - MENTALLY CHALLENGED- secure fenced yard - companion dog required* Meet Money Penny! She's 8 yrs old, 14 lbs, Chihuahua Mix. Penny is a Special Needs Dog due to genetics. She was brought into rescue with 3 other dogs we believe were siblings. She's fine physically . Her biggest issue is her fear, slow comprehension and super sensitive t o noises and she'll run to safe zone. She eats well, and she will take food & treats from your fingers. She does hang sometimes with the other dogs as seen in the photos. So having another dog in home is a must for her to understand how to be a dog. She can not be handle but she will sit in the room on a dog bed or next to you on a couch if other dogs are around. She is not a lap dog. Because she is frightened quickly, she has not been taken outside because not sure how noises outside and the wide-open space would affect her and whether she will be controllable. Foster home is still working on that. She is 95% potty pad trained. Sometimes when she hears a noise and runs, she may potty just because of running. But 95% of the time she used potty pads. PENNY WOULD LOVE TO HAVE SOMEONE WHO WOULD JUST LET HER LIVE QUIETLY AND LEARN TO BE PART OF THE FAMILY. Meet Pico! He is an 8-year-old Chihuahua mix and weighs 13 lbs. Pico was adopted from Needy Paws several years ago but sadly his owner passed away and he needed to come back to us. Pico was an incredibly loyal companion to his owner and stayed with him until the end. We would love to get him placed in a home soon and have no doubt that he will be just as loyal to his new family! Pico is a sweet, snuggly boy who just wants to be cuddled and loved. He enjoys hanging out on the couch, giving kisses, getting belly rubs, and sleeping in bed with his humans, preferably under the covers. He is a little shy at first and may bark to greet you, but quickly warms up and becomes a lovebug. He enjoys playing with toys and running around the yard, but he also loves to snooze the day away. He gets along fine with other small and medium dogs and would probably be fine with cats. Pico would do best in a home where someone is home a lot. He is house-trained and stays in his crate when his foster mom has to leave him alone, but he doesn't fully relax in there and you can tell he is counting down the minutes until someone comes home. Like many small dogs, he does bark hello in response to any people or noises outside, so he may not be a good fit for an apartment or condo. Hi! I’m Joey and I’m a fabulous 13 year old senior gentleman. I don’t mean to brag, but I’m a very handsome red long-haired Chihuahua weighing just 10 lbs. I’m looking for my perfect family who will love me and provide me with a nice, quiet home in my golden years. I’m pretty happy with the simple things in life such as cuddling with my people, meal times and naps. I mean what else does one really need? If you’d like to run errands, I’m your man. I love to ride in the car and am the best little passenger you could ever have. Sometimes, though, I can get a little cranky when it comes to sharing my people with the other doggies. I would do well in a home where I’m the only dog, so the competition for mom or dad’s love won’t exist. Ideally, I would be pampered with attention in my golden years and not be subjected to youngsters, as that wouldn’t be so great for me or them. I would really love it if my new mom or dad would be at home with me more often than not, so I would not have to spend my days being left alone and crated. However, I don’t mind being crated for a couple of hours while my family runs errands. I know it might be asking a lot, but I do love sleeping in bed with foster mom at night and have become kinda spoiled, so a home that would continue to spoil me in that way would make me so happy. I’m working on potty training … let’s say I’m a work in progress. As I came from a puppy mill situation, I was not taught this skill as a young puppy, but I’m working on it now. I do have one small issue with my eyes called chronic dry eye which requires daily medication for the rest of my life. I am really very good about taking my medication for this so it is not a big deal. I am a lovable and sweet little man and would make a wonderful companion. I’m up to date on all my shots, am heartworm negative, on heartworm and flea preventative, neutered, microchipped, and de-wormed. Joey’s adoption fee is $250. WE DO NOT ACCEPT PERSONAL CHECKS.
