This little fella needs to find a very special adopter!! We don't know much about his background, but he came to us because his person had died,, and after the trauma of that event,, he had to deal with strange people and new places and other critters and it was all a bit much for him.... His default position when scared is to growl and snarl! We set him up in a nice quiet spot without anyone threatening on the other side of a partition, and just pretty much let him chill..... One day a week or two into this routine, it was like a light switch had been turned on! He decided I was an okay person and the growling and snarling was replaced by an enthusiastic little dog spinning and jumping around and wanting to give kisses. He didn't initially want anything to do with the other small dogs, but after a bit he decided they were okay and he likes to go out in the area with them and explore, he doesn't have much to do with them as far as playing, but there is no aggression. We've also learned that he has a definite preference for the ladies.... Skipper needs a quiet environment with not a lot of folks coming and going and I would be concerned that kids wouldn't read his signals well enough not to create a problem..... So we need to find just the right home for him. He's not snapped or bit anyone here and we want that record to continue..... and it will require time and patience and consistency to manage that. If you are up for the challenge and feel you have the situation and the commitment to give this little dog that stability he needs to feel safe and loved again.... we'd love to discuss it with you. We have an update on Skipper's health that might discourage some folks from pursuing the adoption idea...... He has a significant heart murmur, and while we are treating that with oral meds, there is a possibility that the condition could progress to heart failure with a very hard to estimate time line.November 20, 2024, 4:12 pm

Meet Amor – a male Chihuahua mix, approximately 9 weeks of age as of January 3. Settling into his foster home now, he’s doing great! He loves people and wants so much to meet the two very large dogs at his foster home. He is just a ball of excitable energy, learning new stuff every day. Darcy Rose is about 1½ years old. She was rescued from a backyard puppy mill along with eighteen other small dogs. When she came to her foster home, she was terrified of everybody and everything. She had no social skills and trusted no one to touch her or get close. Over the past several weeks she has learned to trust and accept love in her dog-friendly foster home. With the help of three small dogs, she has learned how to be a dog and belong to a pack. She has learned how to eat her meals from her bowl without encroaching on the others' meals. Darcy is now beginning to learn basic commands and will sit with her foster family while they watch a movie. She has gone from not knowing how to be touched, to wanting to be cuddled. Darcy is beginning to blossom like a rose! She is smart, loving, and so sweet. All she wants is to be loved and accepted. This little girl will be a dream come true for a family or single person. Everyone thinks I’m a Chihuahua mix with a little bit of Italian Greyhound because I have long elegant legs. I weigh just under 12 pounds. I’ve been in foster care for a little bit and I’ve learned so much! One is that I can get along with dogs that don’t get in my face. If they do, I will growl at them. I’ve learned that I love playing with the young Chihuahua mix here and running to my heart’s content in the fenced yard. If you have another little dog near my size, I’ll need some time to realize that it IS fun to have a playmate. There are cats here in my foster home and when they get near me, I growl at them and I’ve chased them a little. The cats here have lived with foster dogs and usually don’t pay us (fosters) much attention. So I’ve learned that I can co-exist with the right cat(s). I’m good at alerting to noises outside, so I would not be a good neighbor if you live in an apartment or condo. I’m working on a walking on a leash and I do my “duties” (house training) outside. I love my foster mom and love to hang out with her and watch TV. I love my food and look forward to my meals. My ideal home would have room for me in the big bed (but I do sleep as quiet as a mouse in a crate), a fenced yard and a warm and loving lap. I ride great in the car curled up in the seat. I like to go along for the ride to Lowe’s, Home Depot, or other dog-friendly establishments, I want to be your buddy! I came into rescue as a stray and the local shelter called SBRET to help me. My skin was a bit of a mess at that time but after receiving help and advice from The Itch Clinic, I am much happier with some affordable allergy food and a Cytapoint shot every 3 months. I am a people loving boy. I will do my best to keep other dogs away from us. Seriously, I don’t like other dogs. I’m no fan of cats either. And while I’m at it, skip the kids as well. No wiggle room on this. 🙂 My best day is a long, active walk and then some cuddling on the couch. After lunch we could have a potty break (I’m rock solid in this department!), play with my toys and then maybe a car trip around town. Doesn’t that sound like a cool day to you?! I’d like a real dog walker by the way. Someone strong enough to keep me close in case we see a dreaded dog along the way. For being such a people loving dog, I am remarkably slow to warm up to new people. I am so worried and anxious that it could take 3-4 days for me to relax in a new home. I come with a set of instructions from my foster parents on how to care for me during this time. But, it never fails, the lightbulb goes on and it’s all love and snuggles!! Adoption Area: East Tennessee Tidbit needs: -Active adult home or one with children over 10 -Someone home part of the day to continue house training (doing well but not perfect) -Someone surefooted because he likes to be right under you around the house -No large dogs or rambunctious cats Hello my name is Tidbit. I am a 4-year-old, 7-lb male Chihuahua mix with a beautiful brindle coat! I came to SBRET through a veterinary office who found me as a stray. They took care of me while they treated my heartworms and then my foster mom picked me up. I’m a sweet, quiet guy who really likes to hang out with my people. I’m friendly with strangers and I’ll alert when the mail man comes to the door, but otherwise I don’t make much noise. I walk pretty well on the leash and enjoy a good long sniffy walk when it’s not too cold out. I also like to be carried. I like snuggling in a warm bed or lap with a cozy sweater on, but I can also be quite busy following my people around the house or playing enthusiastically with my toys. I sleep quietly in my crate in my foster mom’s room at night without a peep, but I’m sure I’d love to sleep in the big bed if my new family will let me. I’m still working on house training but I’m doing pretty well if I’m taken out often and watched closely. I do ask to go out but I’m pretty quiet so my cues are very subtle. When I’m left alone during the day I stay quietly in my crate or playpen in the living room. My foster mom puts me up because I’m still house training. Once I master that, my foster mom thinks I’d be fine left out and about where I would just find a bed to snooze in until you came home. I get along just fine with other small dogs but large dogs scare me so no large dogs in my home please. I can also get along with cats who kind of keep to themselves and don’t get in my face, but if they get in my face, they scare me too! Gentle children over 10 years old should be just fine. My first car ride was very long and I got a bit car sick because I was so nervous. My foster mom is pretty sure I’ll learn to love the car with a slow introduction and a lap to sit on. We’re working on sitting in the car and getting lots of treats while I snuggle in my doggy booster seat with the engine running. The next step is practicing trips just around the block. Although my heartworm treatments are done and I am as heathy as a horse, my new family will need to have me tested in about 4 months to be absolutely certain they are never coming back. That is standard procedure and nothing to worry about! I have otherwise been cleared by the vet. I have all my teeth and they were freshly cleaned. I am neutered, up to date on shots, flea and heartworm prevention, and ready to find my forever home! My adoption fee is $175.
